Shortening A Trailer Axel

The way I approach axle shortening is - I take out the amount from the center and install a solid piece of round stock turned down to within .002" undersize. I grind a light groove in the round stock along it's length to accommodate the pipes internal seam. Drill 4 holes in each half of pipe for plug welds. Fit one half, weld plugs, fit other half, align, weld plugs then center. I don't grind the plugs or the center welds. I wire wheel and paint

So fare as clamping, what a gnarly table !! I have a 4x4x 1/4 L bare I can use to align a pipe that works pretty well without all the hassls. They sell the nifty clamp parts/things at banggood but not that cheap and they come without the top part, may have to get a few.

I would have machined the internal sleeve with a .0005-001 interference fit with a shoulder in the middle , heat the axles up and slid them on, then weld

Thanks for a great video. What size tubing did you get for the inside of the axle?

Not sure but I had to turn it on the lathe for a snug fit

You evidently are not aware that all axles have a camber in them, I was hoping to learn how to shorten (Narrow) an axel and maintain the camber.
