It’s wild how dogs know. The mantle of Alpha passes instantly. My friend had two dogs and the older one tormented the “puppy” every chance he got. One day when the puppy(he was part Great Dane so he was huge) got too far away from us. The alpha attacked him. Half a second later the older dog was in a submission pose. The puppy, whose barks had been the yap, yap kind, barked once at the older dog. When we heard it, we thought for sure he was about to kill the older dog but he stepped back ran and picked up a ball and brought it over for one of us to throw it. He would never let any other dog mess with that older dog and they’d sleep right next one another. Never growled at each other about food either, but that old dog never pressed him again
