You should definitely do a Lore Video on *Robert Garcia* someday, I kinda feel that he's a very Underappreciated Character in both "Art of Fighting" and "King of Fighting" series combined. Edit: I actually like the Fact that *Robert Garcia* was the Main Character in "AOF3: Path of the Warrior," it shows that SNK has always have Respect for him.

I agree. Robert is very underrated. It is very curious how in the AOF continuity, he and Yuri became a couple at the end but in the KOF continuity Robert has feelings for Yuri but she is not interested.

@@meganinten0078 Although, Robert's Ending in AOF3: POTW where Yuri was going with him is very Ambiguous, but I could assume they did ended being Together in a *Happily Ever After* kind of way, I mean, it's the same thing with Andy and Mai, we don't really know if those 2 actually ended up being Together or Not after the Events of RB: FF. Edit: I can't believe I made a Typo in the KOF Name on my Comment, I could Re-Edit to Fix it but that'll take away the Heart, so it's already too late.

@@joseurbina3835 Well, at least we see Yuri having feelings for Robert also in Ryo's ending where he let her going with Robert (Ryo is such a good friend) About Mai and Andy's relationship. In FF, Andy knows about Mai's feelings but he only sees her as a younger sister. He only cares about training. Mai's luck is surely bad. In KOF, he is in love with Mai, but rarely expresses it. At least it looks like their relationship have improved in KOF XIV

The technique they used for this game is called rotoscoping, where you film an actor doing the movements and draw over them. Shaq-Fu used the same technique, as did the original Prince of Persia and Another World. It's this technique that leads the game to have more realistic and smooth animations but slows the pace down as they don't really truncate many of the movements so they play out over a greater number of frames. I would guess the cost of hiring actors is why the roster is so small compared to other SNK games of the time. I don't really have any idea how much this game made but I would not be surprised if SNK took a loss on this one.

I think most of the Art of Fighting games are underappreciated, but you have to understand King of Fighters '96, Tekken 2, Metal Slug, Virtua Fighter 3, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Virtua Cop 2, and SCUD Race/Super Sega GT came out the same year so it was a huge undertaking to compete against all of that in the arcades. I've never actually seen a Neo Geo with the Art of Fighting 2 or 3 installed but I remember seeing lots of the games I listed. I know in other countries like Mexico and Brazil SNK fighting games were way more popular but unfortunately my experience with SNK was limited until I got the internet.

I’ve always liked the special move micromanaging in this series. It’s what made the series unique. FYI projectiles could be destroyed by punching or kicking them. Another staple of the series.

This is the one that they still do tournaments for at Team Spooky or at Mikado Arcade. They actually show the nuance of the combo system. It is actually pretty interesting compared to other SNK games.

Art of Fighting originally have fireball parry mechanic since the 1st AoF. Simply just punch or kick the fireball at the right moment.

In general this game is a bit like Tekken, pretty different from what you expected from SNK back in the day, not many people played this game, I pretty much owned that machine lmao. The game was made with motion capture and that's the reason it is so weird. Supers in this game are fairly easy, but you need to be flashing red and have a full power bar, and if you connect them when the enemy is pretty low on health you can automatically skip the second round. Robert's was the same inputs of the Aoh sho ko ken, but pressing B when the stick is neutral. You can destroy fireballs with a well timed neutral attack, it's always been an Art Of Fighting mechanic. Also, there's a cool mechanic in this game, all characters have a birthday date (Robert's is decembeer 25th and Ryo's is august 22nd if I remember right), they had higher defence and stronger attacks on that day, you'll know who's birthday is because it says on the top of the main screen "happy birthday Robert", and the character is flashing red even at the selection menu.

In terms of sprite animation, this game was pretty much Street Fighter 3 quality, a year before Street Fighter 3, and on older and "inferior" hardware. Not to mention the novelty of having the "rival" character take center stage this time. Plus, if I remember correctly, didn't this game control in a manner similar to a 3D fighter in spite of being a 2D fighter?

Honestly the main reason this game is mostly forgotten is it’s roster. Sure Street Fighter 3 did something similar with it’s roster, but Street Fighter was popular enough to do a daring move like that. Art of Fighting, while it is a popular SNK series, isn’t nearly as popular to do something like that. A shame, because the sprite work in this game is CRISP.

I sucked at this game, but I always love how it looks and the music! I think with this game, SNK attempted to do a more flowing combo system a la 3D fighting games (L-R punches, L-R kicks), such as Virtua Fighter or Tekken, down to how you stay lying on the ground for a while so that your opponent can punish you. However, that system did not translate very well when combined with AOF's 2D style gameplay. Plus the AI is so, so cheap but for some reason Wyler is a pushover.

So the thing is, you can't have "instantaneous" *and* well-animated at the same time without significantly high framerate. But you can tell they were really going for a "Garou" thing here, but still true to AoF roots that didn't have cancels. There's a reason why KoF is a sequelization of this, and why they're just minor-leaguers there.

I have to concur with Shoryu here that the Art of Fighting's gameplay was terrible. Me and my friends always found them very clunky and stiff compared to the other games that were available at the time. It up there with Eternal Champions of being difficult. It's awesome that SNK was able to salvage their roster by improving their abilities in future KOF games. I wouldn't mind seeing Creston come back for a Whip rivalry though. Fun playthrough Shoryu!
