I can't get over the wonderful blend of Johann Strauss, jazz, circus-like feel, Hispanic dancelike quality, and an almost-Sousa march-like quality to this music. It is obvious his experience as a silent movie pianist gave him a universality of expression. He learned to balance "music as dramatic statement" and "music as entertainment" in his compositions and this came from his silent movie pianist experience. As much as we hate what his government did to him, in learning to cope with their demands Shostie dabbled in the people's music and this actually enriched his music. The glory of his 5th Symphony is its approachability. If we look at his 4th Symphony, we know the direction Shostie might have taken his symphonies: into an abstract, dissonant, and almost mathematical kind of music. Actually his Symphonies are amazingly approachable and their movie-music slant are the parts that make him so accessible. Shostakovich is an amazingly diverse composer and there will never be anyone quite like him in the history of music.

There's one pair of composers here on youtube that i admire for their diversity, actually they're not long-form writers, more a short form/one song at a wonder format, but... the feichter brothers turn out gold in as many styles and mediums as can be found. its kind of incredible how they're able to do so MUCH in a variety and have it turn out listenable, all of it hope that helps.

Listening to all these well-composed masterpieces, I cannot but feel Shostakovich was truly the most important composer in all aspects of the 20th century classical music. Simply wonderful!

Shostakovich is to me a great composer, because he was like no other. He was unique, melodious but quirky. Other "good" composers remind me of great composers, but they are reminders, not unique. Such is the lovely music of young Alma Deutscher. I hope she develops her own musical signature as she grows. For now, she reminds me of Schubert and Haydn, not bad as influence.

I love the fact that Dmitri Shostakovich composed this music in private away from Stalin's scrutiny. Shostakovich was Stalin's choice as the main composer of music in the Soviet Union, yet the composer was privately in love with the freedom found within Jazz and had a true love of football (soccer as it's known in the U.S.). I think that Dmitri Shostakovich is the greatest composer of the 20th century.

Jazz suite No.2, Waltz No.2, I haven't heard anything about how Shostakovich became inspired to do this particular number. But, in spite of the Soviet Union when it was in existence, whatever inspired him to come up with this, it became one of my favorites upon my first hearing of it. Especially when learning of when it came about.

This collection is outstanding. The national symphony orchestra of the Ukraine and it's conductor did an outstanding job. This shows you what a brilliant composer Shostakovich was. A cut above the rest. Thank you so much for uploading this for all to enjoy. May God be with the people of the Ukraine and we are all praying that the war will end soon. May Putin be punished for what he has done.

In my book his Festive Overture is one of the greatest overtures ever composed. Why isn't it played more often by orchestras???? Themes are glorious and triumphant. Instrumental groupings are stupendous. Music is gloriously dramatic, heart-touching, and varied. Shostie outdid himself with this overture. Conductors are blind, deaf, and dumb. I have never heard it played at any San Francisco Symphony concert. Come on now! This is just stupid!!!!

@Broomfield Eric Sadly enough, you are right, although copyright came to Soviet Union about 3-4 years after Shostakovich's death. Even more surprising, the rights to Shostakovich works belong to some German company, which has absolutely no connection with his living relatives. That's just dishonest, I believe -- to prohibit people to touch and savour ones of the greatest pieces of art of XX-th century.

Introduction has to be my favorite from the Gadfly suite, but I absolutely adore Romance! Especially the part at 2:39:32 when the buildup climaxes. I've never experienced that sort of emotion in any piece of music before! Just that one simple chord can create such a strong emotion. Especially when the brass joins in for that extra effect a couple seconds later!

And the very end is amazing when the entire orchestra joins in and plays the main theme just after the climax!

I'm fed up!
