Lately, I have been listening to this composer's work more closely, and with certain works, quite often like his first prelude and fugue for piano, and the seventh prelude and fugue, and of course, my first introduction to his music is that wonderful fifth symphony, and now this....I can hardly say anymore, yet being so....well Thank You!...
“I couldn’t write an apotheosis to Stalin, I simply couldn’t. I knew what I was in for when I wrote the Ninth.” The last two movements, which I never appreciated genuinely before listening here to Bernstein, are Shostakovich’s answer to the layer of threat and dullness heaped on him and other artists by Stalin. “I am still here, we can still dance.” The 7th did this in that other context.

Think Leonard Bernstein directed Schostakovichs 'Leningradskaya' - Symphony in Moscow in 1959, thanked the composer, who was present in the hall, for the beautiful tunes, shook his hand and then held a great speech about the friendship between the peoples of the world. Why is this all forgotten ?

I totally approve that idea that the 9° symphony of Shostakowitch is the lightest and the most "haydnesque" of his symphonies. Another way to say that would be tht it is close to the spirit of the 8° symphony of Beethoven. But as in the case of Haydn and Beethoven, "light" does not mean any sort of loosening in the architecture. This symphony is built with steel. The underlying story about the vision of Stalin by Shostakowitch is by no ways in contradiction with this statement.

Don’t forget Mravinsky. He premiered many of Shostakovich’s works and worked closely with him. @iwanabana8 жыл бұрын
uh, no. the weight of censorship needs to be like a cloud that casts a shadow over the entire performance. If it's plain, pure joy of a speedier tempo, the blatant sarcasm would be totally lost. Plus, the harmonies shift way too frequently for the sumptuous acoustics in the Golden Hall of Vienna. This tempo is a perfect depiction of the piece, imo.
@toomuchrose8 жыл бұрын
The piece wasn't censored, none of his music was ever censored, so your remarks don't make sense. This symphony is a testimony to the Russian people and an oblique critique of the Party, which is why many people in the audience wept and why it received a standing ovation of almost an hour after the first performance. But above all it is a symphony that demonstrates the unique sound of Shostakovich's melodic sensibility. It is not a funeral dirge, it should not be dragged along like a bloodied corpse. It is an affirmation of life and the power of the spirit that will not be cowed into submission by thuggery and terror. Every Russian understands this. Lenny doesn't get it.

I have not a single clue why you remain so adamant when the wealth of information is freely available on the internet. I, at least, went and checked on several sites, and also wikipedia, and thus guessing you were just being ironic (like Shostakovich). But not the case, and I will not entertain you any further. This tempo is just fine, he suffered mentally from the iron curtain, his music most certainly had been banned (more than once), his family had privileges removed; you're willfully ignorant and I don't have anything more to say to you.
