This was performed in Tokyo's Suntary Hall on November 27th 2000, which happened to be Ms. Hahn's 21st birthday. Mariss Jansons is conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Maestro Jansons had a long career as conductor, notably for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Shostakovich and other Russian composers, as well as Mahler. Ms. Hahn needs no introduction; she is considered to be one of the finest solo violinists in the world. She has won three Grammy awards and has been recently nominated for another.

Mariss Jansons led the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the mid-1990s. I had the joy of attending his premier there, at which he conducted Mahler 's 1st, preceded by Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite." So amazing. As if I had never really heard either work before. The college I served during that period engaged the PSO in a partnership arrangement to attract audiences to annual concerts from our county north of Pittsburgh, and I got to speak with him on several occasions. A great, kind and thoughtful man, and an unexcelled 20th Century Conductor. The world is poorer for his untimely passing.

indeed. if any at all group was able to translate this kind of musical genius into the abrasive furor of the metal scene ( that is frankly quite apt at translating the despair of our modern times ) it would be absolutely fucking genius. Alas...we are far from any of this kind of performance on Metal stages. Pity. How i wish they would abandon the ridiculous 4 chords and growling scheme...for a more dangerously educated attack. The musician furor. I guess METAL lore is best left to anvils to express themselves. Even Oranssi Pazuzu leaves me wanting. Why can't METAL musicians orchestrate ? lack of superlative talent ? or is it that Metal genre is not taken seriously at all by the classicaly trained ? i guess ...that answers that.

As a violinist who has played at this concerto for many a moon, and with no particular success, I must say that I admire Ms. Hahn's performance greatly. This is not a work for talented amateurs. Her technique and spirited playing set the standard for the rest of us. Shostakovich wrote 2 VIOLIN CONCERTOS, and I can't say i understand No. 2, but I've been in love with No. 1 since college. By the way, have you heard Shostakovich's SYMPHONY NO. 9? That's where he gave the one-fingered salute to Stalin, and lived to tell the tale. His memoirs--TESTAMENT--are well worth a read.

Knowing this Dmitri Shostakovich Violin Concerto Masterpiece Composition & in his First Violin Concerto, in a minor, Op. 99, most well, having loved the work and recorded it with Bamberger Symphoniker/ Hermann Michael, dirigent, in the 13th Century Abbey in Bamberg, with an amplified Bamberger Symphoniker with extra Double Basses plus other instrumentation, for Sudwestdeutsche Rundfunk, at a very tender & difficult time in one's life with a terminally ill father & principle teacher, prior to Heifetz, nearing the End of a grand life in Music, the gravity of Dmitri Shostakovich's Score made an enormous impression on one's heart, soul and sense of in medicine termed, pre-grieving, knowing full well one was on the cusp of losing a beloved adored father & while in Bamberg to record this Epic Violin Concerto with a profoundly Great German Orchestra ~ The depth of let me term, Shostakovich's Diary of Emotions composed into his Score revealing much of his sufferings under the Regime in which he lived, became poignantly etched into my mind, heart + innermost being studying over 8 hours daily on the solo violin part & knowing the full orchestral score to become part of the Whole of a Great Work for the Violin with Orchestra, or a 'Symphony with Violin' of Shostakovich ... In Ms Hahn's profound public offering of this now fabled Violin Concerto, I noted her utter solidity of every technical challenge which reflects all emotional challenges throughout the Four Movement Violin 'Symphony'! The Grand Third Movement 'Passacaglia' is a release of pent up emotions of the composer which burst forth after the violin has made a curtsey on C entrance upon a growing Sea churning but calmed by the entry of quietude yet 'calm before the Storm' of the violin composition as it grows more bold w/each bar of the violin solo part, and climbs to peaks of emotion leading to a Fugue within Shostakovich's Score which duly pays homage to a grandness of Johann Sebastian Bach Fugues from the Six Sonatas for Unaccompanied Violin, yet in Shostakovich's style of growth before ones very eyes & ears, aurally ~ An Alone Fugue begins as a theme then becomes an eventual chorus w/a many 4 voiced choral symphony, with the violin Solo Fugue growing into such a musical climax composer, Shostakovich then adds swirls and runs in both running perfect C#/G# starting on up to an octave above and repeats, w/attacked chords below then all the way up in swooped octaves to the building Finale yet a surprise to even the greatest of Orchestras and Conductor's, and in this Hahn/Mariss Jansons performance, & almost without parallel, excepting the David Oistrakh/Maxim Shostakovich/Moscow Orchestra premiere of Dmitri Shostakovich's 1st Violin Concerto in a minor, Op 99, w/the Composer's Son, conducting knowing his father's Score intimately with the Violinist Dedicatee, *David Oistrakh, completely 'On Board', flying into a Fourth Mvt. Allegro with wings of musical speed & grand violinistic Elan which becomes, essentially to my writer's mind, aka, violinist, a Final Victory Movement over bonds of restraint Shostakovich suffered during his support of compatriot great Writer, Sohzhenitzen (spelling, please forgive an American not familiar with the Russian spelling or in English) & the temporary repression of the Dmitri Shostakovich Spirit yet which Prevails in the Finale Final flurry w/Full Orchestra 'flying with' to another Galaxy!!!! Ms. Hahn, although much younger when this concert was filmed/recorded, gave a truthful glimpse of the Grandness of the Shostakovich Score and possesses the 'right' temperament to convey great contrasts of emotional empathy within the Whole of this Grand Twentieth Century Violin Concerto and the First which seems to me, the more beloved & performed since its arrival via 'King' David Oistrakh, premiere of the work and not too long prior to his Earthly Passing ... May the Great Dedicatee of Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto R I P w/Angels of Music in Heaven Above ~ Brava H.H.!! ~ Elisabeth Matesky, US Violinist Ref: facebook.com/elisabeth.anne.775?fref=nf {Includes Photo: The White House, EM, CBS TV/Potus Carter/French Premier Barre/Ysaye 3rd Solo Violin Sonate in D, "Ballade" w/portion of Potus Carter TY Note to Elisabeth Matesky, signed, 'Jimmy' 16.9.
