Shot Peening Process Optimization - Critical Applications

I know an engineer who worked in steam catapult development back when the technology was still in its early stages. He told me that the shuttle hooks were breaking from extreme tension imparted on them during testing. So he recommended shot peeing them. They followed his advice and there were no further breakages. Also, I was a machinist and learned early on that anytime you machine down one side of a piece of cold rolled steel it will warp on you as the cold rolling induces residual stress all over the entire surface area.

Good video, good info. But setting aside the "industrial" requirements for service life benefits can you tell me how glass bead blasting by a DIYer in his garage at say 60-90 psi compares to real shot peening? I realize you can't determine the exact energy transfer in such uncontrolled environment, but is glass bead blasting even in the ballpark of kinetic energies required or would we have to bump up the pressure to above 100psi basically destroying glass beads?

SAE specification SAE J443 will give you the process for plotting a saturation curve. I'm not sure on your second questions, maybe check out this paper: www.shotpeener.com/library/pdf/2016030.pdf

Nice video but my Question is that Why in over coverage of a surface by shot peening there is a decrease in fatigue strength (Any Justification) ?

Now dont quote me 100% , but i believe it is all dependent upon the material and application. When you are peening a surface, you are removing a slight bit of material and also compressing it in so once your coverage point is achieved and you have overlapping dimples, you're going to start to create stresses in the compressive profile that you built up

So if you going to shot peen do you heat treat the object before or afterwards?

If you're going up to transition temps then you remove all the beneficial stresses induced by shot peening. However some processes will low temp heat treat, like tempering and burnishing.

+Luis torres An internet search reveals lots of suppliers who sell shot peeing equipment. For shot media, I recommend Premier but there are other reputable manufacturers out there.
