Join us for Episode 3 of the Master Sporting Clay Series! In this episode, Jonny Carter (TGS Outdoors) and Josh Brown (CPSA Course Setter of the Year) break down techniques for shooting crossing targets with greater accuracy and consistency.
Jonny and Josh explore different shooting techniques - swing-through, pull-away, maintained lead, and discuss how to find the move that is most repeatable for you. In English Sporting Clays, hitting the same target 4 to 5 times requires a highly consistent approach, and they’ll show you how to identify the technique that best suits your style. You'll also get in-depth insights into:
Timing: Learn the optimal timing from hold point, to a fully mounted gun in your shoulder, to the kill point.
Foot Positioning: See how subtle adjustments in foot positioning can impact your kill point.
Adjusting for Range: Josh and Jonny tackle crossing targets at varying distances, from 25-30 yards to 45-50 yards, and discuss how distance affects the shooting method you use.

First thing I learned when I started. Positioning of shooters feet, influences 90 % off the quality of the shot. Greetings from the Netherlands. Martin. Multiple former Dutch team champion.

I wish we had more sound clay-shooting instruction here in the States. I paid a hefty fee to a coach last time, who insisted that I shoot every bird with maintained lead and would not just give me feedback on how I was shooting. Perry P., SoCal, USA

That's the problem with a lot of coaches, they all have their favorite methods or technique that they teach. Gill Ash says you should never pull through the target and always use maintained lead yet George Digweed is not a coach and uses the pull through method a lot, can't argue with success.

George digweed says you need to be side on, Josh says left feet sqaure to the kill point, I'm confused. And where does josh brown rest his visual point please?

What works for one person may not work for another, as Josh said. I've found I need my right shoulder Square with the target & my left foot more open also as Josh explained, that works for me, so try different ways. I've also been practicing a lot of gun down, then had to practice gun up on certain stands, it's taken a while but I'm getting more comfortable with both now

Josh is actually telling you the same as George did, the left foot is the driver of the shot and should point towards the kill point.

@@windym709 but isn't certain shots like teal & driven bird, the king digweed use side on stance so the shoulders remain parallel and you don't pull off the line. I have 100 questions to ask these professionals like Josh. Whats his POI of his shotgun 60/40, 70/30. Upon calling for the bird he rest his eyes over the gun or on the trap, what's his take on gun balance and barrel length, bead or no bead, brandon powel start his gun close to the trap as he says to build more connection with the bird, what's josh opinion, does josh use back edge, match the speed from behind and then make the move or just swing through with gun speed and body rotation. Which edge of the clay to hard focus on, if it's a trap like going further and climbing, do you focus on the bottom edge or the top edge, and trap like birds he holds a high hold point 50% from kill point and does he look under the gun to pick the bird asap. Does he use swing through on all his shots even for skeet like fast / small window targets. Digweed gun hold point seem to point over the line of the targets and then lower left arm when mounting, what's josh opinion. Thank you
