Barrel and throat life, bruh. We know how fast rounds wear barrels... 300 Win Mag, 300 RUM, 270 WSSM....even 25-06 & 243. If barrel life exceeds 5k rds, this indicates advanced metallurgy. Which means it's going to be HUGELY expensive.

That's my concern as well. There's no free lunch, physics is undefeated and we know what higher rifle round pressures do to barrel life. The civilian pressure round that doesn't have the special bimetal case will be comparable to what we're all used to but it's also missing out on the capability of the higher spec round. Replacement barrels able to withstand that of pressure over an active deployment firing schedule are a simple, if expensive, logistics supply issue I assume the bean counters have accounted for but can easily be neglected.

Just want to give my input from a former infantrymans standpoint on actually using a 5.56 weapon in Afghanistan. I was a saw gunner on my first deployment there, but my company was also attached to Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force and we were attached to a 3rd SFG ODA team. Most operations we did, I did not take my SAW (which if I have to remind, is a 5.56 light machine gun) but would take someones M4 instead if I felt the mission called for it. In more "kinetic" operations where it was guaranteed a large gunfight was to occur (sometimes lasting multiple days), I did bring my SAW. I wanted fire superiority by "volume", rather than accuracy - and that to me was an "operator preference" decision I made on my own going into certain areas. When I did take my SAW, It was configured with whats called the "PARA" barrel...its a shorter 12 inch barrel over its longer barrel as it was more maneuverable around structures and in buildings and it kept it quite light. I just kept the longer barrel in my truck and would use it if i felt a barrel change for heat reasons needed to occur. With that said, we were in NE Afghanistan where engagements were "decently" far. Id say the furthest was around 400 meters and the closet being sometimes just a few meters away. The ranges were quite dynamic. At this time, I was issued the M855A1 ammunition which is hotter load than its predecessor M855 (green tip) and the bullet was redesigned for the tip of the bullet to be steel, followed by a lead core copper jacket behind it (basically its 2 parts), I can recall an engagement I made with that 12 inch barrel on a fighting position of 2 taliban fighters that were around 350-ish meters away. Both fighters had their bodies exposed basically from belly button up firing on other positions of our element, and I fired a few burst strings into their position and they dropped instantly. I did not do a BOGBDA on that position (Boots On Ground Battle Damage Assessment) to confirm where on their bodies I hit them, but ISR (the drone above us) did confirm they were killed. A few operators from the SF team (the 18 Bravos of all guys) preferred their MK18 mod 1s over their ALSO issued SCAR-H using the MK262 ammo (77 grain SMK bullet) and affectively dropped guys easily out at 400 meters and hit that "off button" on some fighters. There were times the Taliban did ambush us on patrols where their positions were maybe 800+ meters out, even way more than that sometimes. Their weapon systems being typical AK47s firing 7.62x39 and PKMs firing 7.62x54R and their fire was so ineffective. They were way out of range for us, we had some snipers come out with us to take them out, or set up some 60mm or 81mm mortars to take out those fighting positions and we took our time doing so because their fire was extremely ineffective given their distance. If anything, we would just call Air Weapon Teams (typically Apache's) and just have them take out the positions and it was a good day. In my opinion as someone whos been down range in Afghanistan where engagements WERE further sometimes than 300 meters - 5.56x45mm did its job. I never really thought a new round or weapon would help me accomplish my job better or anything like that. Some veterans may differ on the opinion but we all had a different experience. Im just showing mine. In my opinion - i think the US Army was taking a look more at statistics on paper, rather than actual battlefield feedback and looked for an excuse to dox the M4 Carbine entirely out of its arsenal and get a new one. The biggest reason it seemed the Army wanted a more capable weapon was the ability to defeat rifle rated body armor. Some have said to me "Maybe we are getting ready for a war with China or Russia" - but my only problem with that statement is....Russia does not issue rifle rated body armor to standard Infantry units and China only started to just 2 years ago and its still a slow progression. So why was the Army in such a rush to acquire a new weapon? I would say to that - use your imagination and think of an "army" that does have body armor. Thats my 2 cents.

There's 308win factory ammo that will produce similar velocities with 150gr the same barrel length, though that is with fancy powders. Buffman range tested the 150gr SST superformance from a 12.5" at 2550ish...and that is within the comparatively low regular 308win pressure specs. To exceed the 135gr ballistics, you'd have to step it up to 155gr ish bullets tho. Just imagine what a hybrid 308 cartridge might do with 180 or 200grain pills, jesus! According to Sig they are using a new barrel process that allows barrels to be way more durable. This process is superior to HF . Sig has hinted to this process but hasn't even released any good info on it either . The M5 barrels per TDP is supposed to last 12k - 15k life expectancy. I'm actually pretty interested in picking up Sig Cross 16" 277 Fury . Seems to me like to would be solid choice for LW Hunting Rifle for Lower 48 .

The XM5 barrels are made out of an unusual and expensive steel called Maraging Steel, which is also used inside jet engines to withstand afterburner. It's so unusual that it's a closely monitored material by the US government as it's highly suitable for uranium enrichment centrifuges.

The problem with government military philosophy that has also bled into the private sector is the attempt at having the universal, one thing to do it all piece of gear. The army did this earlier with camouflage when it introduced multicam; which has subsequently led to the creation of it variants for specialized situations. Arid for desert conflicts, Tropic for jungle and forest conflicts, Black for nighttime operations, and Alpine for snowy areas. Now, the military is asking for a rifle and cartridge to operate in both close quarters and snipe targets out to 600+ meters. It is not possible. Just like there is no universal camouflage pattern, there is also no universal cartridge nor weapon system. .300 Blackout is one such example because it was primarily designed to be used against armored targets in close quarters. That is why your cannot use your .300 blk rifle in a rural setting because it loses velocity very quickly at relatively short distances. On the flip side, 7.62x51 is designed to be shot at larger distances, but weighs a lot and is only effective out of a longer barrel, making it ineffective in CQC. The M4 and 5.56x45 are not going away anytime soon. The earliest is going to be in the 2050s. I expect to see the M5 to be deployed ALONGSIDE the M4, not replace it. Some units need to be trained for ranges combat were as others need to be trained for CQC. The medic cannot be the communications guy just like the sniper can’t hack into a mainframe. No one person can do everything and the sooner the government and public realize that, the sooner we (the United States) will be back on track to being the most effective fighting force in the world with ZERO countries being anywhere remotely close.

Great video! THIS is the kind of real world, head to head data we need. And that's just out of a 13" barrel? Crazy!! You only touched on it briefly, but yeah, I do think barrel erosion/burnout is going to be a very real problem; one more easily solved with the Govt's coffers than when this is more available out in the Civilian world. My guess is that Armorers are going to have to keep a Logbook with round counts for each rifle, and replace barrels on a set schedule.

These Hybrid Cartridges are absolutely insane and a game changer! I was reading online that a guy took .308/7.62 calibers and stuck them in 6.8 x 51 Hybrid Casings, and was able to get a 168 grain projectile moving at over 3,256 FPS in a 24 inch barrel. That's over 3,900 foot lbs of Energy! 300 Winchester Magnum territory! I’m curious your thoughts about .277 compared with 6mm ARC. From an energy transfer standpoint, the .277 and 6.8 x 51 are likely winners but by how much? And is it worth the decreased ammunition carrying capacity? I’d love to see an analysis of the SPEAR against FN’s new IWS (in .264) and Geissele’s 6mm ARC rifle. Great video, I love the real data collection and the emphasis on energy transfer at distance. It doesn’t seem like something many other people are paying attention to.
@AlabamaArsenal
@AlabamaArsenal Жыл бұрын
Really appreciate that. I think that if you included cost as a factor the 6MM ARC would be the clear winner, but the military obviously doesn't care about that, because any of the current rifles could be cheaply retro fitted to accommodate 6ARC. We have several 6ARC videos that I'm working on currently perhaps as I collect that data we'll do a 277Fury versus 6ARC video because I think that would be interesting as well. The military also hasn't been clear what level and it what numbers the Spear and 277 Fury will be implemented. So this could just be a replacement for the current SCARS that have gotten very mediocre reviews from the troops or it could be a more wide spread adoption, hard to say at this point. Gotta hit on at least one big issue bud: as Gun Jesus pointed out on Forgotten Weapons, the M5 loaded with NGSW optic weighs about 40% more than what my fully kitted M4 did when I was down range. The ammo also weighs a shit ton more than 556. I don’t know about y’all, but my knees and shoulders are permanently fucked from humping in kit that already weighed a ton. Regarding ballistic capabilities…we won’t know shit until we know more about the actual rounds and loadings the military plans to use. Which no one without a clearance and need to know does, at least for now. So, all we know for a fact now is that combat loadouts already suck, and this will make them worse, if actually adopted and issued.

longer range is nice and all but still events in Ukraine show that most infantry engagements are still within 300 yards. Also troops loved .223/5.56 nato when it came into service in vietnam for its devastating effect on target with the intal ball loading of M193 of 55 grains. m855 gave "better barrier penetration" but pretty much cucked the round and made it extremely yaw depended more so than the M193. they also liked it for being able to carry way more than .308/7.62 nato. A 180 round load out of 5.56 is only 6 pounds while the same 180 round load out in 7.62 nato is 15 pounds. So for the same wight of 15 pounds load out you can carry more than double the round count with 5.56.

@@mysterymeat1216 At 4k a piece, I doubt it will flood the market. It's doable, but until they come into the high range of AR-15s, they'll be curiosities at best.

@Orion people said that about the MCX Virtus at first too and look what happened. It's one of the most trusted platforms currently available. The Spear will be no different. Just needs some time to get its few issues fixed
@orion8981
@orion8981 Жыл бұрын
@Kaleido The Virtus isn't $4000. These things will about as common as SR-25s or HK 417s. The Virtus attacks the same market as mid tier AR-15s. It's a cool rifle and I have no doubt it'll be popular for a certain type of person, but it isn't going to be a consideration for 99% of non-contract buyers.

Some background: Winchester received the contract to run the US Army Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) and in Jan2022 received an additional $8 Billion contract (cost plus AND firm-fixed) to manufacture the NGSW 6.8x51mm ammunition. In order to manufacture the quantity of 6.8x51mm required by Dept Army this will require the construction of an entire new series of buildings along with upgrading existing equipment. The estimated timeline for this was discussed in the official announcement of the NGSW award and will take a few years. During the interregnum, Winchester / LCAAP will continue to manufacture the projectile (e.g. the M80A1 derivative) with the hardened steel penetrator tip while Sig Sauer will manufacture the case bodies, powder etc and produce the final cartridge product. LCAAP did mention during their press conference (can be found here on YT) that they will work with Sig to “optimize pressures and velocities” so I think what we are seeing here is very similar but ultimately not the exact loading to the final product that LCAAP will produce in their factory once fully built and functional. It is safe to assume that the 6.8x51mm ammunition (hybrid) shot during this review is left over ammo used for the test and was using a 6.8mm “surrogate” round that is intended to be similar in weight, accuracy and trajectory to the 6.8mm exposed penetrator tip round of the final design. Remember this whole program was sold to congress as a solution to defeating enemy body armor, so they need to deliver on the penetrator tip. If you ask me, even with the steel penetrator tip, this may be enough to punch though cheaper NIJ Level III / RF 2 plates but without a a tungsten tip (similar to XM1158) then it likely will not consistently penetrate NIJ Level IV/RF3 as demonstrated with similar and more lethal threats on the KZbin channel Buffman. So while this may work to some degree (ie punch through cheap Chinese armor plates) NIJ Level IV/RF3 and equivalent plates are just getting cheaper and easier to manufacture…so the end state may be billions of dollars spent by US Army to make a rifle and round able to punch through Chinese armor only to have the PLA upgrade their existing armor for a few million dollars and render this ammo and the extensive effort and investment null and void. We shall see.

Awesome video. Still I only see those adopted as DMRs, too heavy too limited mag capacity. But then in that role combined with the new Vortex solution on top - overmatch DMR Btw Your quotes for the 7.62x51 seem to be a bit on the low side. A Barnes TTSX 130 grain gets up there out of a 16 inch

TLDW: 13" barrel in 6.8x51 performs the same as a 20" barrel in 308. That's impressive. Not sure if I want to carry that weight but it's impressive
@Tacet137
@Tacet137 Жыл бұрын
Hella impressive and then consider that 6.8x51 has higher sectional density than .308/7.62 NATO, so it's gonna be much better at penetrating body armor

how come they dont have a 16" barrel but keep the suppressor roughly in the same spot. like the suppressor threads are inset and a rear expansion chamber that goes over the barrel. logically seems like an easy way to not have total length increase as much

Military adoption + length of service. If it was just military adoption .50-70 Govt, .30-40 Krag, .38 Long Colt, and 6mm Lee Navy (you can also arguably put .30 carbine in there too) would still be popular.

The case tech is what really interests me. I'd LOVE to see, say, a 6.5 Grendel round with that bi-metal case tech so I could get the velocity up while still retaining the small package/AR15 platform I have for a hunting rifle. In reality, for the average infantryman, the 6.5 Grendel (a much better round then 6.8 SPC in every scenario) or 6mm ARC would have been a better idea then letting SIG _buy_ another contract (SIG wins on cost not quality) for some bulky rifle with heavy ammunition. We've been here before, there's a reason we went away from such things. Maybe it's a good specialist rifle but an upgraded 6.5 Grendel round using this SIG case tech in a rebarreled M4 would do nearly as much and be far less costly but hey... it's just tax dollars right??? Or maybe it's some of Joes printed funny money??? So hard to keep up with the scams these days.

It's not the real military loading. It's the training round. The Army will get an even higher pressure loading for combat use. Minimum specs were 3,000+ fps. Imagine barrel life in the final combat version? And the recoil in higher fire rate bursts? Try staying on target at medium distances with quick engagements.
