It takes a very special person to be a LEO. Very few have the integrity and disposition to carry such authority and sustain the nobility of the cause and its ideals. Communities have to have police departments. Police departments need officers. The general population produces fewer and fewer qualified candidates. The more lawless the culture becomes and the more LEOs are generally vilified politically the more difficult if not impossible the job becomes. The criminal element becomes more and more brazen. It's a recipe for disaster. LEOs deserve respect but they must be held accountable when they throw away their integrity. When they are not held accountable it further erodes public trust.

An officer's job is part law enforcement and part customer service. Kenneth was a dissatisfied customer, not a criminal. Everyone who works with the public has been approached and criticized by a sarcastic customer. Those encounters are resolved with good communication/people skills, not violence. Anyone choosing the latter would be fired immediately and arrested for assault. Why isn't that the standard for LE? Police powers are granted to serve the public, not the individual officer. This was an egregious abuse of power. Kenneth was turning to leave. The officer could/should have done the same. The damage this does to public trust/respect for LE can't be overstated. Shame on Phoenix PD for needing DOJ and media intervention to stop abusing their citizens. Thank you for covering this. More officers need to stand up and say this kind of behavior has to stop.

Because there are over 710,000 officers nationwide who conduct over 28.9 million encounters with citizens PER DAY. If you look at the percentages, the number of unjust encounters and bad cops is extremely small. It's just that the bad encounters is what makes the news so you see it on a daily basis. But you will never see all the good things officers do, because that's not juicy enough. 100 bad encounters in a day out of nearly 30,000,000 is a very small number in context.

I think this is detrimental to the whole system we have (that is eroding because of these cowards AND because of officers who should never have been hired). In jury trials I believe most people want to believe the police. So when bad officers get on the witness stand they automatically have credibility with a jury. It just comes with the badge. Thankfully in this case the prosecutor had enough morals to drop the case but the prosecutor had no problem going forward with the video and obvious right violations until the officers past came in. The 4 officers that forced his 👋 finger prints not 1 spoke out saying it was wrong.
