Thanks to everyone who suggested this on my Chopper reaction video! After seeing a young Eric Bana at work, it seemed only fair to witness a young Heath Ledger! :)
A 19 year old Heath Ledger stars opposite a young Rose Byrne and the always talented Bryan Brown in this 1999 Australian classic. A lot of you said this was Australia's answer to Guy Ritchie and Tarantino which I get! Great little crime flick with interweaving storylines 😁
The bank robbery scene was such a crack up! Fun watch, especially considering I had never heard of this before!
Crazy to think this was released the same year as 10 Things I Hate About You.

The song “These Days” by Powder Finger that plays in the final shootout scene is beautiful. There’s an amazing version they performed live on their final live performance before they broke up where the crowd all sing along. The actor Tom Long (the one in the flip flops who dies with the marked $100 note on his chest, sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 51 after a long battle with cancer

I first saw this film at an indie cinema in Canberra with director Gregor Jordan giving a little talk afterward. He mentioned something about how Rose had broken up with her boyfriend just before or during the shoot, and you could almost hear every guy in the cinema thinking “aha!”. Then he said “she’s now dating me” and you could hear every guy in the cinema thinking “shit”.

What I love most about this movie is how authentic it feels, obviously they put a more comedic slant on a lot of aspects, but this IS essentially life in the Australian city suburbs. Highly recommend another early Heath Ledger film: Candy, with Geoffrey Rush and Abbie Cornish. A beautifully made film about some very ugly subject matter with powerhouse acting from everyone involved!

Two Hands loosely based on the Underworld criminal activities in Sydney's Kings Cross in 1980's, 1990's and somewhat early 2000's. Underbelly television series gave us look into the real life Underworld stories with the first series simply titled Underbelly focuses on gangland killings in Melbourne, few years after Chopper then Underbelly: Tale of Two Cities and Underbelly: The Golden Mile focuses on Criminal Underworld of Kings Cross and also tied into this is ABC's Blue Murder from mid 90's of corrupt cop Roger Rogerson and Criminal Arthur "Neddy" Smith Fun fact, The XA Ford Coupe in the movie is now owned by Australian comedian Merrick Watts

Oh my god, I can't believe a KZbinr reacted to this movie. Obscure as anything at an international level, but oh such a great Aussie movie. And one of Heath's more memorable performances. I swear the line where he says 'Yeah shotties are good mate.' was originally 'Yeah shotties are ace.' My mates and I were quoting it for weeks but it's been a long time and I might just be going crazy. But maybe there's been a little dubbing happened for the international release, a la Crocodile Dundee. Couldn't lip read well enough to think the lip movement looked wrong. Wally's also a guy called Glenn in 'The Dish'. Another fantastic Aussie movie. Sam Neill, Patrick Warburton...

You said his survival instincts were lacking! His survival instincts were PERFECT... for someone with innocence trying to prove his innocence through his sense of honouring his word. He needed to prove to Pando that losing the money was an innocent mistake so that Pando didn't keep out a hit against him. He had to prove to Pando that he was innocent! And there is honour and respect amongst thieves! 23:32 The scene with the radio station car offering him $10,000. You said, "Why didn't he just take the money?!" He just robbed a bank to pay back a hit man, and the radio station called out the rego plate of the stolen vehicle from the crime scene and then wanted to publicise them on national radio whilst the police were looking for them. He was driving the car and realised the irony of having to wipe them off the road so they didn't get caught. It's ironically funny! All the scenes with his dead brother were scenes whereby his brother crawled out of his grave to intervene to save his little brother's life as an act of providence Great reaction 😊 Your next reaction should be "Getting Square". The brother was a bad person but he loved his brother enough to fight his way out of hell to give tow hands to help his youger sibling. He had input in the bullets getting washed, he jolted his brothers memory, and I think a few other things to help his brother survive and escape an outlaw lifestyle.

I liked the dead brother aspect. It was a constant reminder of his mortality and his likely fate. It kind of hits him over the head with the fact that he will probably die on his current trajectory.

Very underrated movie, A cult classic really. Now the dead brother part is the supernatural aspect in the movie, he's breaking out of hell to help save his little brother from repeating his own mistakes that lead him to being killed by Pando in the bush. He watches as Pando's offsider first loads his gun with the rusty bullets and the mystery is whether he curses the gun to always misfire or is it just the dirty bullets. He also touches Jimmy in the train causing him to freak out and maybe finally take a different path in life.

The whole country has changed for the worse. saw it coming in the 90's when the gov went on a banning rampage and taught the Australian population that the way to deal with perceived problems is to 'ban it'. Even down to live music venues and dog parks, banned. Just go to work and pay your taxes like a good citizen, there are cameras everywhere to watch you.

Animal Kingdom - the movie - has Joel Egerton, Ben Mendelsohn, and Guy Pierce. Plus Jackie Weaver. The Boys - the movie - has David Wenham and Toni Colette. Both movies keep you on the edge of your seat for the whole ride, but The Boys is far more disturbing. Both movie are based on two of Australia's most notorious murders - and in the case of Animal Kingdom, the violent war between the Victorian homicide squads and the Moran family. Theres violence in Animal Kingdom but not no graphic violence in The Boys, even though the crime at the heart of The Boys is one of the worst in Australian history. Incidentally, Romper Stomper - again, the movie, not the tv series - was Russell Crowe's first big movie, which he starred in as the violent skinhead, Hando. This movie was so notorious at the time that one of the most respected Australian movie critics refused to give it a rating, inadvertently making it an object of curiosity and a bigger hit. Russell Crowe has been in some really bloated dud movies during his career but this is not one of them. For a young Brian Brown you cant go past Breaker Morant. Which is also a true story. Two hands was released in 1999 which was about the time King Cross, Sydney, was being cleaned up for the 2,000 Sydney Olympics. Its gone from a street worker, brothel infested, drug infested, needle covered dump (I lived their twice in the late 90s) to - now - a genteel and slightly dull place, although it still has all the night clubs where party drugs are the draw instead of the heroin that used to rule the Cross. Seriously, some of the things I saw in the Cross in the 1990s defy belief. The guy who plays Wozza in this also plays Col Mancusi - Kirsty's main enforcer and collector of drug debts - in the very funny comedy series Rake (the australian original, not the american version). You would probably love Rake. Each season the level of insanity increases, but it is very funny.

Since you're on the topic of some pretty dark Australian cinema, may I mention Metal Skin? And since you mention Rake, the original Blue Murder. I know it was a two part mini series on the ABC, but it is basically a film, and one of the best true life underworld productions ever, in the world. Richard Roxburgh's performance is nothing but scintillating, and it forever made him a screen legend.

@@tileux Ben Mendelsohn is in it. It surrounds cars and the Melbourne drag scene. It's about as fucked up as The Boys, so beware. I think I saw your Blue Murder recommendation, now I think of it.

The only tv show i ever saw Heath Ledger in was the 1996 tv series Sweat which is filmed in Perth where he was born and it is hard to find outside of YT uploads.
