Chinese speaker here, Technically Shou or 受 does not actually mean bottom in Chinese. 受 means endure/suffer depending on context. Japanese people in ancient times simply took 受 from the Chinese language and changed its meaning along with its pronunciation to uke, which we all know means bottom. Funnily enough just like Shoto I was pretty confused that 受 means bottom in Chinese but after some researching whoever commented that was half correct.
