So glad I took the time to have another go at improving on the original shou sugi ban bowl I made a few months ago. The texture on the wood mixed with the shine of the gold is really quite stunning. let me know what you think, can it be improved further?

Mike, great decision to go with the gold, it turned out beautifully! The bronze inlay was icing on the cake. Ash always has some unique and beautiful tight grain patterns. Awesome job!

As usual, very nice work, Mike. Perhaps only as a suggestion if I may - using a reddish coloured wax to match the reddish rim inlay or a goldish inlay to match the goldish exterior. Beautiful work!

A terrific piece of ash, such nice grain and contrasting colours. Very well done. The inlay does add a lot to the bowl. I was crossing my fingers that the epoxy did not set before you managed to get it into the groove. A local professional turner calls the effect of burning, texturing and applying coloured paste "Flame Sanding". He also likes to use ash for this effect due to the open grain. I can appreciate you being hesitant to let this one go. Dave.

Thanks Dave, I have only ever tried this with ash, like you say the grain is perfect for it. I like the 'flame sanding' name, it's quite apt as there is no real need to sand after. I've never had a problem with the epoxy setting too fast you do have a reasonable time to get it in, plus the heat keeps it a liquid a bit longer. To sell or not to sell, that is the question, I guess I could make another and then keep 2 :) Talk soon. Mike

That gold and burnt contrast on the outside is amazing. It's like Damascus steel or mokume gane.

Great job Mike, you demonstrated some good skills there. I loved the gold inlay really looks good against the Ash. I have done similar to this some very lightly scorched to really show off the grain but never used embellishing wax on it, I can see why you would be reluctant to let it go

This came out perfectly. The gold embellishing wax really made this spectacular. I was reminded of your original bowl when you did a burnt finish on one of the tea light holders. I’m really glad that you made another. I’ve always wondered. Is the name Yorkshire Grit sort of a play on words?
@MikeHolton

Thanks Ted, it was burning the tea light holder that reminded me of what I wanted to do as well :) I'm pretty sure Yorkshire Grit is a play on words, both my parents were from Yorkshire so I do feel connected :)

Inlay King 🤔 hmmm not sure lol Love this Mike. When you had finished the outside of the piece and were saying you hope we can see the shimmer from the gold, I was just about shouting "YES"! Absolutely beautiful. Now for the big question. Did you keep it and did your wife find a space for it? 😋🤭 Thanks again for sharing your amazing talent 🙂

Lovely work Mike, but I’d have been terrified to do a burn finish with all that sawdust, shavings, and chips lying around 😱one slip and you’d have a fire on your hands. I mean it’s not like you got flammable chems around like alcohol, white spirit, and varnish …

I can understand your fear but it is a lot safer than you think. The torch is very localised and very easy to control. If you are worried just have a little clean up before you start. Thanks as ever for your support :)

I like the bowl shape and final color. How deep did you cut the groove for the epoxy? I've used epoxy to fill cracks but have not purposely created a space for epoxy.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton Жыл бұрын
Thanks William, the inlay was about 3-4mm deep, you don't need to go any deeper than that.

Grrr..third time trying to comment 🤪 Not posting for some reason. Or else you are deleting it???? 😂 Wanted to say how beautiful the bowl is. 😍 Absolutely love it. The big question is, did you keep it? 😊 Almost answered you out loud when you asked if the camera was picking up the shimmer after you had applied the gold wax lol Your oration is very conversational and, for me at least, I could happily respond and have to check myself quite often 🙈 Maybe I shouldn't admit to that 🙃 Thanks again for sharing. Very much looking forward to the next video. Geniet jou aand verder 😉

Thanks Fiona, deleting your messages? Why did I not think of that sooner 😂 I did not keep this bowl, I sold it to a college at work as a present for his wife. Nothing wrong with talking to a video, you only know you have a problem when you expect a response 😜 I had a lovely evening thanks, how was yours? 😀

Hmmm you would miss my witty banter lol 🤣 At least I would like to think you would so maybe don't reply to that statement! Let me live under my false illusions 🤪😂 I am sure his wife was so happy with it. It was truly a wonderful piece. As I said before, if it wasn't for the cost of packaging and postage to South Africa, I would be broke but with lots of your creations to keep me company 😊 Thank you my night was great. Go Google translate! Hee hee 🤭
