Thank you for this excellent summary. I think the first point - using huge corporate LLMs - is not only a matter of funding but also might conflict with staying as independent as possible, which I consider crucial for scientists. To add a point from my (very little) experience with LLMs in a local environment: from my understanding, they seem less black-boxed and give me a more concrete idea of what's going on under the hood …

Excellent overview. My work on computational linguistics and NLP on ancient, highly specialized religious texts fully confirms your findings. Inconsistency is a big problem for LLMs. Prompt engineering can be productive in fits and starts. Where I've found LLMs most helpful is in customizing challenging pipelines/workflows in data transformations.

Hi! I'm watching few of your videos, and wondering something.... What can I use this NLP for in real life? I mean, labeling, topic modeling etc, it's all good and looks fantastic. But... I really don't know how to apply it in real life. What will I do after I get the topic modelled? For finding similar topic when needed? Or what? Is it useful for any kind of automation? Or it is become our helper when we need it? Sorry for such a dumb question, but I really am confused about this... I watch many tutorials, and in this point, I'm kind of thinking is this really useful or not... Maybe it's because of my background, I'm just a simple freelance developer, I'm not targeting any high achievement like making something for big company etc. I really learn this for myself, improving my skill, and maybe want to use AI to help me in my personal project. But, till now, I still confused... Previously, I think it can help me to analyze forex data ( making some kind of better indicator or something in machine learning ), but it's proven to be not useful or not accurate because or lack of data. When learn NLP, I always think about chatGPT or some thing that can replace it for more specific task, but it also proven to be not working right now because there's no super small model that can reasoning that well. Well... Phi 2 is great, but it can only hold 2048 tokens, so.... Yeah.. Again, not useful. Want to pretrain from the start, but don't know where to learn, how to get massive data that I need, don't know how to filter data so it only works in fields that I need of to make super small specific model. Also learn about bert a little, it seems good, but again, don't know where to start, and again back to question of "is it really useful" and " how can I use this to be useful" or anything. Hope you can give some pointer to me.. Thanks...

This is such a great question that I will make a video that answers a lot of your questions. I may even make a series around practical and applied NLP! Stay tuned. It should go live in a week or so!

I have a degree in translation and a master degree in Translation Technologies, but now I am studying a Data Science master degree. Do you think this is going to be useful for someone from my background to get a job into this area rather than sticking to Machine Translation alone? Do the companies care about linguists and translators to get them into LLMs and other Data Science stuff?

Do the companies care about linguists and translators to get them into LLMs and other Data Science stuff? In my opinion, perhaps Big AI companies, like OpenAI and Anthropic do; and companies that do something truly noble might care as well. But It is a good question. Looking forward to some good responses from some expert in this domain!
