Dude you need to either rewatch the video or learn something for fucks sake. If you had a 980 for this long you arn't into ln2 overclocking aka everything said in this video does not matter to you bc it's not going to make single difference "literally not a goddamn frame of difference" and if you really would go to a whole different brand because of this then you defiantly didn't have much of brain to begin with. This is partly due to the attitude took through this video, that vcore controller only fn matters to literally like 5 people that would actually need to manually adjust that. If youre still on a 980ti then anything else you get is going to be an upgrade without overclocking and if you do decided to overclock it i guarantee youre not doing anything else then a voltage unlock through msi afterburner and some minor core/ mem tweaks. I doubt most of the people saying stuff like this has ever even taken theyre graphics card apart.

Fuses are extremely underrated though. Sometimes due to the lack of fuses (e.g. msi) the failure might fry the card into oblivion and certain manufactures (e.g. msi) would do everything to refuse RMA, leaving you with a peace of unrepairable hardware. Also there are cases where manufacturers don't have an office in a customer's country, thus when they RMA a card paying for custom clearance to get a fixed card/replacement back might cost more than an actual repair. Not to mention, that a warranty will expire at some point anyway. Realistically these little fuses can be a difference between having to a buy a new 800$ gpu vs paying ~100-200$ for a repair.

@arturpaivads4 жыл бұрын
Actually its not a prototype board, it wouldn't make any sense sending a prototype board to reviewers because the production would be so different than the prototype that all analysis done would be invalid. So this is a pre-production board, which means its basically at the latest validation tests and only minor changes would be done, like fixing a capacitor issue for instance. Its whats called in the dev world "release candidate", its basically ready to ship unless we find any last hour bug. Imagine that you make tables, okay? Then you send to a table reviewer your prototype table, but your first impression is that L shaped tables use better the space of the room, so you make a prototype that its in L shape and send to the reviewer. But in the development process of that table design you see that the corner is not used, so the L shape is scratched to a normal flat design, and then the reviewer did analysis of a L shaped table but your costumer would receive a flat table, so the review of a L table is completely pointless, it maybe even be hurting for your business since your customer is expecting a L table according to the review. But, if you send a pre-release version, a version that is basically ready but you didn't do to much testing on it and its already a flat design the reviewer will analyze a table that is mostly what the consumer will get. But during the testing you check that the feet are damaging wooden floor, you decide to change to a softer type of feet without change the overall usability or visual of the table. the end user probably won't notice the difference at all, and even if they notice, it would be a better experience than the advertised by the reviewer, since now the table doesn't scratch floors without any down side effect.

Your criticisms makes a lot of sense considering it's pricing in the US, it doesn't justify it's markup and it seems to have some issues. Just thought I'd mention that in Australia it's one of the cheapest 3080 you can buy, and so when many brands - even ones such as zotac and galax - are going for $100-$400(AUD) more expensive than the FTW3, it's a no brainer which to buy. For those wondering, inductors gets higher energy densities as the switching frequency increases due to higher di/dt. The downside is the inductor losses, and MOSFET turn-on losses (the more you turn it on then off, the higher the loss). Almost all losses manifest as waste heat.
@_--_--_4 жыл бұрын
Right and the main benefit resulting from this is the better line regulation given the same inductor and capacitor (provided the inductor has a high enough self resonating frequency and that the capacitors have a low enough impedance at the switching frequency) or the same line regulation but with smaller inductors and capacitors. High frequency switching converters are really neat, i have implemented a few in designs with around 10ish MHz switching frequency and for the current they can deliver they are *tiny* .

@@alexwang007 Actually nothing fancy, standard SMD chip ferrites and X7R dielectric MLCCs. The magic was in the IC, it was a TI TPS54A20 which comes in a small QFN package. Can you guys do a video on the EVGA 500W XOC Bios not working on FTW3 3090s. It is a huge issue over on the EVGA forums right now because EVGA's own bios is not getting to 500W on their own FTW3 cards despite the same bios working perfectly on the cards of other brands. It appears similar to what is said in the video, EVGA cheaped out on components on their $1800 card which gimped its performance.

The UP9511 and UP9512 are exactly the same voltage controller aside from the external I2C control. So many GN viewers are watching this and thinking the PCB is "cheap" when it's just an extreme overclocker lamenting the lack of voltage modding. Shame on GN for publishing this without fact checking it. They are subcontracting BuildZoid for cheap content without vetting it and it's totally reckless "tech journalism" to do so. I expect so much more from this channel.

Excellent video. 2 cents: phase count matters, but 8 maynot be that bad. 600khz is per phase switching frequency, "paralleling" 8 phases, looking at 600khz*8=4.8Mhz Fsw sufficient for transient full loadstep response, plus it is the outputMLCC capacitor banks first line of defense to catch the transient load step anyway VRM close loop BW can't react that fast intentionally.
@_Tamas4 жыл бұрын
so the pcb you had on there seems to be the first one that you received before they changed it a bit with MLCCs on the back, was there no other change than just the pos and mlcc between the one you have here and the ones on retail shelves now?

That's what I wanna know. I don't understand why there aren't more models (of all video card types) with two bioses. That one feature is extremely useful. Not having to worry about messing up your bios when trying out a different bios is extremely useful, but it's also useful to be able to have two bioses, to be able to quickly switch between two different power and performance profiles. I don't care about being able to push the card hard with overclocking, I just want some basic useful features, like easily replaceable fans, adequate memory cooling, decent, reliable power delivery, decent fuse design, the absence of major design flaws, etc..
@Falkentyne074 жыл бұрын
Buildzoid, The fuses are bad for modders. Specifically the PCIE slot. It's only 10 amps. 10A * 12v= 120W. So if you are shunt modding the card to allow it to draw more power, if you draw more than 120 watts from the PCIE port, the fuse will blow and you can't use the card anymore. I believe the ratio of PCIE slot to a single PCIE plug is 1.25x or something close to it. So if you tried modding for more than 600W total (e.g. stacking 5 mOhm shunts on top of the originals, or removing the original shunts and maybe using 3 mOhm replacements, that fuse is going byebye. The other AIB's have 20 amp fuses on both the PCIE slot and power PCIE plugs (afaik). The Founder's Edition does not have fuses at all. I've shunt modded mine for 530W TDP @ 114% power limit, and a few others have modded their FE's as well.

I would argue that given the limited amount of time that the partners had to make their own cards its not surprising they heavily based their cards on the reference, but that also begs the question, should they be marketing them as "Premium" products with the accompanying price delta
@HoshinoMirai4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and I think that's what the title tries to encapsulate. Should be better for something that cost 810 bucks. If they don't have the time to actually make a better version work, they probably shouldn't release it or charge it as if it were a more robust design.

So, basically it comes down to this: If you are a "normal" user, and your overclocking goes as far as raising the Power Limit in Afterburner, the best thing to do is just to buy the cheapest 3080 you can get at the time and be happy. Because u are getting at least 90% the experience of someone who ponies up the big bucks for a high end model. Sounds about right?
@norwegianshaggy44194 жыл бұрын
No more like 98% of the experience, or maybe 99.999%. Considering that the RTX 3000 series is Nvidia's Vega moment, and the stock cards are already clocked right to the limit...

Hey Buildzoid. I have to ask...do you know any way to reduce coilwhine of 3080 FEs? I choose the FE, because I listened to your rants. Especially about the blower-heatsinks being to large. The FE fixes that, by using a short blowerstyle. And the other FE Fan is a passthrough, meaning less trapped Heat under the Card and less recycling of hot air.

@emilethesnaar66044 жыл бұрын
With regards tot he shunt resistor count, given the increase power draw of the card, you need to scale the current measurement range, at the cost of resolution. By splitting the power input over several shunt resistors, the current measurement range decreases per shunt decreases, increasing the effective measurement resolution. One can only think that the current measurement IS important enough to require high resolution for accurately calculating power draw, and whether it is safe to boost or not.

ASUS is basically the only AIB that has actually done interesting stuff with Ampere cards. Everyone else is just reference PCB with some minor upgrades here and there. I wonder if this is related to NVIDIA not informing the AIB's on time, or whether they're all cheaping out on us.
@TrueThanny4 жыл бұрын
If I had to guess, it would be nVidia gouging the AIB's for the chips (GPU and RAM), and setting an unrealistically low MSRP. I think the claims about the upcoming mid-range card are no less true for the 3080. Maybe even the 3090, given nVidia's greed.
