Should Chelsea and Nerissa Have Been Separate Characters? (Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken)

Although storyboards for "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" had Chelsea be the daughter of the mermaid queen, Nerissa, this was changed for the final cut to have them be the same character. Was this a wise decision by the filmmakers? And how would either outcome impact a potential sequel/series?

Also, the director stated that Chelsea sees herself as the hero in the movie, and I believe Agatha imprisoned the mermaids including Nerissa, Nerissa plotted revenge for 15 years and somehow managed to escape her imprisonment, and when Nerissa said that she and the other mermaids don’t age, I personally think she said it as an insult to Grandmamah, and the trailers didn't spoil Chelsea being the mermaid Queen, DreamWorks in Mexico spoiled it saying she was the queen of the mermaids.

I actually LIKE how you portrayed a Nerissa and Chelsea being separate and it being Nerissa's husband who was killed first to get to her. In fact they could double twist where Nerissa DID have a daughter named Chelsea and it became a family name where everyone of Nerissa's line were named one of those two names, thus Grandmama could be right, but also wrong because the Nerissa she's thinking about not having a daughter is the one going by Chelsea now and Agatha DID kill Nerissa's mother but with how the family name for them works it all gets mixed up. Sure it'd be confusing at first but then Chelsea could explain/show the battle her mother and Ruby's mother faced. Heck add in that the reason Nerissa/Chelsea's mother and Agatha fought WAS because of the death of her husband. Nerissa/Chelsea would connect herself as "killing the Kraken's" by her family's bloodline and she would then kill Agatha, Grandmama or Ruby to continue her family's legacy. Sorry if this is all over the place, maybe somebody can fix it and make sense of it?

With Ruby Gillman becoming really popular on Netflix I think there might be a good chance for Ruby Gillman to have a future and if that happens I hope they make nerisa and Chelsea separate and give Chelsea a better motivation

I’m still waiting for DreamWorks to make TV series for rise of the guardians! Also, I think movies like Nimona,Pagemaster and FireBreather should get TV series! If Ruby Gilman ever does get a TV Siri, I want them to explore of the Kraken, the mermaids, and the other monsters in the sea sort of like Danny phantom, my life as a teenage robot,Ben 10 and Generator Rex! I wonder what other Disney properties DreamWorks will poke fun at next Mulan,Pocahontas,Sora(Kingdom Hearts),Wreck It Ralph,Tron, Beauty and the beast, Winnie the Pooh, Sofia the first,Elsa or Mickey Mouse himself!

I know this movie didn’t market itself at all. But the marketing, and the story that they went with, ended up, making it full of wasted potential I call it the marketing paradox. The things that marketing executives and advertisers do to try to make movies or products more “marketable” is exactly what drives consumers away. They wanted this movie to be a superhero coming of age story, because those are considered marketable and safe, bets. Instead , if the directors had stuck with the original plan and made Nerissa and Chelsea several characters and expanded on the movie, then it probably wouldn’t of bombed because more people would’ve went to see it after the word-of-mouth made it much better. This applies to more than just movies. Products from Apple or KZbin advertisements or even new laws that are supposed to be popular end of being unpopular because people try too hard to relate to other other others.

You know, I found this fanfic called Breaking The Generation Cycle. It both serves as an AU and continuation of the movie where it shows that Nerissa and Chelsea ain’t the same person and a more greying morality and an expansion how Kraken and mermaids became enemies. I heard it was pretty good.

I'll admit I've been soured on the idea of them being separate considering how rampant it is in the fandom but I feel like a lot people forget even when Chelsea was separate she was still just as evil as Nerissa. Was the motivations different? Yes. But both Chelsea and Nerissa manipulated Ruby and were both eager to murder the krakens. Even in the pitch test, Chelsea was stealing and almost drowned a person for the kick of it. Chelsea from her inception was evil in some shape or form. Personally, I've grown to really love Nerissa as a twist. There's a lot of story potential to explore with her post-RGTK, which all but gets ignored, such as if Nerissa is captured and no longer in charge what kind of mermaid will step up to take her place? Or what about a story where Nerissa and Ruby are forced to work together to stop a greater threat such as a Leviathan? The fact that they're now mortal enemies but both understand each other on a personal level could lend to really interesting interactions! Ruby could be the only one who knows HOW to motivate Nerissa into helping as Agatha and Grandmamah don't.

Well, it did leave a broken moral about judging a book by its cover. It even has the war conflict continuing to rise as it shows that violence is the only option. Would more thought provoking and better story wise if they kept that.

I agree that Chelsea should have been the daughter of the Mermaid Queen herself, Nerissa. Chelsea could have some redemption for her character if that were the case. Since then, I may envision she and Ruby have been Sea Bubbies. Before the climax of this film, she and Ruby had a great dynamic. You know they were hanging out, exploring the ocean, and having a great time. But boy, was I wrong; when Ruby got the trident for Chelsea in the climax, Chelsea had a split-second to do the right thing by giving the trident to Ruby's Grandmother and ending a 15-year war with the Krakens. But NO, instead, she had to betray Ruby by attacking her and then going after her mom and grandmother. Reigniting the great war between Krakens and Mermaids that broke my heart and stunned me. Like seriously, all that bonding and fun had to be thrown away because of one stupid weapon. Chelsea, at first, was kind and respectful to me. And awesome. But now I see her as manipulative, evil, and a disgrace.

I have my own head canon for chelsea and nerisa being separate characters. As in chelsea would be working with her mother but when she met Ruby, she started becoming friends with her and started to rethink her plans with her mother. But her mother would remind her about their plans. Until after ruby gets the Trident and nerisa shows up to steal it. Chelsea tells her mother to stop and what they're doing is wrong. Nerisa takes the Trident and leaves chelsea and ruby trap. I even imagine Chelsea helping ruby and her mother and grandmama to stop her mother. After the fight nerisa begs her daughter to help her, but she refuses and continues being friends with ruby.

I DEFINITELY would've preferred if they were separated characters because I thought up in my version of how it should've been without the lame predictable twist that she is Nerissa in disguise. -have Chelsea and Nerissa are separated -Chelsea claims that her mother is dead but it turns out that she's alive Yeah it's kind of corny but it's better than the lame twist in my opinion.😅🤷🏾‍♀️
