Should kids drink energy drinks?
I know they are not allowed in some schools and Jamie Oliver had been spearheading a campaign to get them banned from being sold to children full stop.
But are they really that bad?
Supermarkets were keen to ban the worst offenders Waitrose has plans to ban them to under 16’s and the other big chains are looking to follow suit in March.
You can regularly see kids drinking these cans of energy drink as quick as they can just to stay awake.
The companies say the amount of caffeine is comparable to that in a cup of coffee but what else is in there, that is the big question.
Don't get energy drinks mixed with sports drinks , the latter has sugar, and electrolytes to rehydrate you after heavy exercise. The main problem with sports drinks is the sugar, lots of sugar can increase the risk of obesity, dental work and type 2 diabetes.
But the former, the energy drinks, yes they have lots and lots of sugar but they also contain very powerful stimulants like caffeine.
Short term they increase alertness and attention but the effects are short lived and lead to you feeling drowsy.
One of the big problem areas is the classroom. In 2016 13% of UK teachers blamed poor behaviour on energy drinks.
A 2015 study by Yale University found that 11-14 year old students were 66% more likely to be hyperactive or show a lack of concentration due to drinking energy drinks.
Sleep disruption, which could impair growth of body and brains in adolescents
There are studies showing links between high caffeine intake and palpitations, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting convulsions and in extreme situations death.
And there is a link between energy drinks and high risk behaviours for example, fighting, sexual risk taking, dares, not wearing seat belts, drinking and drug abuse.
Reports show that 18% of kids under 10 are drinking energy drinks.
So why not ban coffee as well. Because the energy drinks have other substances in like taurine (a caffeine substitute) and guarana which makes the caffeine more potent as well as a lot of sugar.
Sports drinks and fruit juice contains sugar
Tea and coffee contains caffeine
Energy drinks combine the two in sometimes ridiculous amounts with other chemicals.
End results NO kids should not be drinking energy drinks there is absolutely no benefit for them at all.
The downside however is phenomenal.
It is not worth the risks associated with high caffeine and high sugar just to stay awake for a bit longer.
Go to be earlier instead.
