I really love the wisdom and study which goes into all Pastor Winger's sermons. The tithe is a difficult issue in the modern day church though. Tithing to Israel is because tithing used to happen in Israel, in the form of harvest and flocks only. If the produce was not from the land of Israel, you could not tithe. Even Jews at the time living outside Israel could not tithe. Tithing to Israel today, is as strange as tithing to your local church in the present day. The Apostle Paul only taught about giving free will offerings, according to your income and not according to compulsion. The question should rather be....should we tithe in the new covenant?

Same, I'd rather have great Bible study rather than 45minutes of acting, stories, pounding a subject that could be wrapped up in a 3 minute sentence or two. So many people seem to think "going to church" equates to being a Christian.

So true! My husband and I moved out of the country for our retirement years, but I continue watching my church’s Sunday services on KZbin because I love my pastor’s sermons. They’re always 100% biblical, and he almost always presents his messages in outline form, which is not repetitive and is much easier to follow. He always gives us the key concept we’re supposed to understand. He’s not an emotional man. He simply speaks The Truth of God’s Word. I don’t know where I’ll find another church like that, and I’ll add that it’s a growing church, with people regularly getting saved and baptized.

There is a pastor who says tithing is not NT teaching. He believes in giving according to what you determine in your own heart as Paul teaches. He asks that you don't give if you can't fulfill your other obligations, such as feeding your family and paying off debt. He asks that you don't give to his ministry if you are not born again. This same pastor has been preaching over 50 years, has built 50 churches with cash, and never had any debt in his personal life or in his ministry. He doesn't live in luxury or with excess. THAT is a man of God! I tend to believe that preachers short change their ministry by teaching tithing rather than giving according to one's own willingness and heart. I tend to think tithing gives us a mindset of limits rather than freedom to give from the inward attitude of the heart. It's like the Bible says, with the law is the conscience of sin." It also says that the law actually draws us toward sin! Quit laying down laws that have nothing to do with salvation and live the life of liberty that gives us the freedom to serve from the heart rather than "the letter of the law." For the law kills, but the Spirit gives life."

Monetary tithing is a man-made doctrine. Biblical tithing in the OT was always agricultural (crops, flocks and herds) from the land of Israel. (Leviticus 27:30-34). God never gave the Church a command to tithe...and never did He give the children of Israel a command to tithe their money, even though money was available and used in the OT. The standard for Christian giving is 2 Corinthians 9:7 2 Corinthians 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

I agree some people pretty much claim to speak to God on the phone every day it is sinister and manipulative. Although i think that some people are referring to the warmth and love we feel inside when speaking to God and thanking him etc the feeling of love which feels as though it is coming from an external source. Like sometimes i wonder if i have did the right thing in a certain situation and will pray for advice, i will then try to assess if i was right or wrong by the emotion i feel inside when praying. Difficult to tell if it is just my own moral compass making me feel that way but when speaking (praying) to God the emotion inside me feels different to how it usually does

Yes, I just roll my eyes - metaphorically speaking - at people who supposedly hear from God every 5 minutes - but then again, I am an older Christian and 'have been around the block a few times'. What bothers me about these 'types' is that young believers feel there is something wrong with them because they don't experience that same sort of 'leading' and can become frustrated and deslondent. It annoys me that this sort of thing is seldom corrected from 'the pulpit' but rather these people are often elevated as examples of those who 'hear from God'. This is utter nonsense and extremely unwise. As Jesus says, the blind leading the blind!!

Here is a different theory about why Paul was going himself to Jerusalem and taking with him a tithe (and it probably WAS a tithe and you will see why). Deut 26:12-13 12 “When you have finished laying aside all the tithe of your increase in the third year-the year of tithing-and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your gates and be filled, 13 then you shall say before the Lord your God: ‘I have removed the holy tithe from my house, and also have given them to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all Your commandments which You have commanded me; I have not transgressed Your commandments, nor have I forgotten them." Paul taught Torah and kept the feasts in Jerusalem, which is why he went himself instead of sending the tithe with someone else.

@bkucenski2 жыл бұрын
Tithing is not nearly as difficult as people make it out to be. Since modern churches don't have a storehouse and only focus on the ministry, I set aside 10% of my income to an investment account. At the end of the tithe year, the church gets 10% of the tithe, the heave offering, and 90% of it is given away for God's work. So if you take home $50,000, then $5,000 is tithed, $500 goes to your church, and $4500 goes to the material needs of people through whatever you want. You can give the money to food banks or other community organizations. You can give the money away directly. You can buy things people need. The churches struggle with the tithe because they want to rob God in tithes and use all the money for vanity projects and lining their own pockets.
@markb70672 жыл бұрын
At least if tithes were paid to Israel it would be one step towards it being biblical. All you have to do next is resurrect the temple, find some Levites, move to Israel, adopt all of the ordinances under Mosaic Law, and become a cattle raiser or farmer.

Honestly the catholic church has enough resources to actively feed every hungry person on earth every meal everyday. They have no excuses. They don’t even feed their own flock though because of how selfish and greedy they are. I was so poor and hungry in America as a catholic child and no matter how many times my mother asked our priest to help he refused. Not just him but all other priests we visited never helped even once. The truly messed up thing is our priest was best friends with my father who was a drunk. My mother has physical handicaps that made her unable to work even though she tried. So the fact we were abandoned by the church still pisses me off. I don’t care who you are if you claim catholics are going to heaven I guarantee only the ones who go against catholic dogmas and are true Christians will. Even priests are greedy. They have all that gold in the church worshipping alongside the other idols completely ignoring the commandments of God.

Oh and if it bothers you that it's an Old Testament scripture then you will have to throw out all of the beautiful promises in the Old Testament "I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you...." and many more - including prophecy that has yet to be fulfilled found in the Old Testament. xoxoxo
@christopherwalls43376 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting verse. However, if you are going to use Isaiah 60:5 to say that it is biblical to give money to the land of Israel today, shouldn't the rest of that passage be occurring today as well? The next verse says that camels will cover the land of Israel, and "all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the LORD." That would mean that these gifts being given to Israel are part of these other nations giving praise to God. Verse 7 goes on to say that flocks from Kedar will come to the land and be used as offerings on the altar, which could only take place when there is a temple to God in Israel. If verse 7 cannot apply today because there is no temple, and there are not people bringing in gold and incense from Sheba to Israel as part of their praise to the one true God, why is verse 5 being applied in isolation from that passage? Just a small study in context here, which Mike does often in his messages. Might also consider studying Jeremiah 29 as well, since verse 11 is the promise you mentioned from the OT. This pastor is not ignoring the OT, but he is making sure that he understands the context before be misapplies a passage.

Tithing is in the New Testament - You seem like a very sweet good man and your followers seem very kind, but I encourage you to look into this a little deeper :) But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: THESE OUGHT YE TO HAVE DONE, and not to leave the other undone. Luke 11:42 AND And here men that die receive tithes; but there HE receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. Hebrews 7:8 (When we tithe we witness that Jesus is alive) ..... For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:21.... unfortunately our unwillingness to tithe under the New Covenant is merely revealing our hardened hearts - just a few things the Holy Spirit taught me...... And I'll end with this (I am not a pastor btw so I have no motive) - And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury… Mark 12:41 (NASB) - He's watching what we do with our money :)
@christopherwalls43376 жыл бұрын
I agree that Jesus is watching what we do with our money (of course He is watching everything else as well). I'm not sure I follow how you quoting Luke 11:42 (which specifically says that the Pharisees should be tithing along with ensuring justice and loving God) means that a non-Jewish person is required to tithe. The book of Hebrews is named such because it's initial target audience was Hebrew Christians (i.e. Messianic Jews). 7:8 is making a contrast between the tithe given to Melchizedek and the tithe given to the Levites. Interestingly enough, the tithe given by Abraham was not described necessarily as required, was it? It was a beautiful thing, and certainly pointed to giving to Jesus, but was it a requirement? I want to make sure I don't come across as someone who says "don't give". However, the issue being raised here, if I am not mistaken, is that you believe that tithing is a requirement to the Gentile Christians, and I simply don't see that stated explicitly in Scripture. The Scripture is, however, filled with verses talking about joyfully giving to the Lord. This is a freewill offering of love, not a requirement. I personally believe that everyone who can give should give, but I will not dictate a certain amount because I can find nowhere in Scripture that commands a Gentile believer to give a certain amount. the tithe (10%) would be a good baseline, though, because of its OT connotations, but would not be a requirement.
@MiddleTennesseeLiving6 жыл бұрын
Technically, the "New Testament" began after the death/resurrection of Christ. Nevertheless, a lot of pastors and denominations wrongfully cite this as proof text that Jesus taught New Covenant tithing, and therefore is to be obeyed by Christians. However, Scripture must always be understood and applied within its proper context. To properly understand these passages, one must understand to whom Jesus was speaking. Jesus was not speaking to Christians, but instead He was speaking to non-Christian Jews, or “Teachers of The Law.” And such Jews (who have not accepted Christ's free gift of salvation) were obligated to obey the Mosaic Law, and thus were required to tithe (if "farmers"), as Jesus rightly pointed out. Within this context, Jesus used tithing as an example of the Mosaic Law which these hypocritical Jewish leaders kept legalistically (even if they didn't farm) while neglecting the underlying principles of the Mosaic Law- justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Jesus could have chosen a different example of the Mosaic Law, such as, "...you diligently offer unblemished animals for sacrifice, but you have neglected the weightier provisions of the law..." and the underlying meaning or lesson of this passage would have remained the same. Furthermore, if you tithe only 10%, then you do not truly tithe according to the Scriptures because you tithe only 10% annually. If you desire to tithe (according to the Scriptures) then you must tithe at least 23 & 1/3% annually because that was the minimum annual "tithe" under the Old Covenant. The minimum annual tithe was never only 10%. This is helpful... listen to this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHvRoH-jlrJ8nck

The state of Israel does not contain the true children of israel. The title of Israel has been stolen by the self proclaimed "Jewish" families. The true children of israel has been in captivity for centuries and are in the dark places of the world. Which is the whole reason for Salvation. Revelation 2:7-10 [7]He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. [8]And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; [9]I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. [10]Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
