Some people have already started weighing in and it’s really interesting to see the different opinions. Do you think former or current felons should be able to vote? And are there any formerly incarcerated people in here who want to share what it’s like not being able to vote in most states?

Yes I believe that right to vote should be reinstated to anyone that has served their time and their debt to society has been paid...felon or not...I do believe this right should not be taken away..while serving their time they are not a part of society...so no..not at that time...after yes...debt is paid...they should have the right to vote reguardless of record...

@@RR-xz6bv I would think a 2-5 year waiting period to be able to vote after freed/time served would be reasonable make sure they are actually reformed * sad thing is we throw too much money at the wrong parts of the process and of we voted to spend more our reps would waste that too

@@Josh-sm6td you mean like a probationary period to watch if they reoffend? They have that. It’s called... um.... probation I think. The point of prison is that you go and you "serve your debt" to society. So therefore if you paid that debt you shouldn't have to "pay" anymore. The only reason this is still an issue because the people who have paid their debt would vote for removing these longstanding punishments and lobbyists and politicians know they can disenfranchise certain parts of the population as long as felons aren't able to vote

@@goste4 Well beyond the punishment, your information that you receive in prison is so filtered already, and prisons are massive political systems within themselves there could easily be an abuse of prisons as basically thousands of controlled votes. @@kyleadammason I think if their crime had nothing to do with them using firearms or physically harming anyone, yeah. But really my thoughts on firearms go deeper. @FtonDavid
@FtonDavid 5 жыл бұрын
@@kyleadammason If you can prove you are a hunter you can have a weapon fit for the type(s) of hunting you do, guns should not be Hollywood sexy models, collectors can have an exemption, but it would be case by case and the collectors will be responsible for any of the guns under their charge. Yes I support taking away people's guns. If that's the argument then felons don't get guns, but they do get the vote. Although you can commit a crime with a long gun, it takes a little more premeditation. Gun crime most likely takes place more often in urban centres. It would be a lot harder for a city slicker to prove they are a hunter then a survivalist up in the woods.

That person is still in the communities that impact him/her (City Sate and Country) and by us making that choice to keep that person as a citizen and to keep them alive they should have a fair and even say about the rules, policies, and laws that will impact them. Or this whole propaganda about land of the free, everyone has a choice, everyone has a voice is all just bullshit, and I personally think a lot of our "Democratic system" is BS what I would like to call Democracy Theater. yeaahhh duuuh first of all they served their term and paid their debt to society 2nd, we really need to not make ex cons second class citizens. Not only are there millions of people who are labeled ex cons as a product of a messed up justice system to begin with, not only have they payed their debt to society, BUT when we disenfranchise people who have been convicted and make they harder to succeed in life and be full fledged members of society that feeds into the cycle of crime where they turn to illegal alternatives because they can't get a job etc etc. And there are millions of people now who served prison sentences and are free now but they don't have a voice in our democracy. Not giving them the right to vote is voter supression and anti democratic. And it's illogical. Their sentence says "3 to 4 years," not, "3 to 4 years plus a lifetime of having no voice and being disadvantaged". You want to give people longer sentences you want to punish them harder that's one thing. I don't agree with that but if you feel that way that's your prerogative. But once they have served their sentence there is not justification for shortchanging their rights as members of our society.

I feel like more needed to be said about the moral responsibility of voting and how a felony charge can be a determination of one's ability to make said moral choice. Also, what about the removal of voting rights as a deterrent to crime? I think it makes sense to restore voting rights to former felons and can also serve as a deterrent to become a repeat offender. I think we need to teach more to our children and adults alike about the responsibility of voting instead of just talking about the right to vote. What a great honor to be able to vote and may we all have gratitude for those who lost their lives securing that privilege for us.

They are a segment of the population with no say in things. That means their specific needs aren't being met. When you have a huge segment of the population that has no voice, the problems begin. Every single citizen living in the United States should be able to vote in all elections. There is no negative effect.

Felon-one who commits a felony. Not to be confused with a misdemeanor. No they should not to be able to vote. If they are given that right back they would also be given the right to carry arms. And i think most people would not want that.

Good video, Nora. Pleasant delivery. Too middle of the road, though. Maybe next time add your opinion at the end after presenting us with both sides? Anyway, I think that the fact that felons were rescinded their natural rights as citizens is cruel and barbaric, not to mention that these laws came to pass because of unfettered racism against blacks, which are then disproportionately brutalized by police and given worse sentences for the same crimes. Should've been done away with when we got rid of Jim Crow.

Hi! Thanks for watching and putting so much thought into the issue. That’s exactly my goal here: to stay in the middle of the road, to present both sides, and stay unbiased as a journalist. And then it’s up to you to use the information to come to an informed conclusion! So I won’t be adding my opinions but I LOVE seeing all of yours in the comments!

Felons pay income taxes like anyone else, ergo they’re entitled to vote. Also, ethically speaking they’ve repaid their debt to society.

There is no taking sides. Its a remnant of past discrimination that should be done away with, but legislators have politicized once again what should be common sense.
