Should Firing Squads Replace Lethal Injections? (HBO)

As states struggle with supplies of drugs used for lethal injections and with the fallout from some recent botched executions, some of the 31 states where the death penalty is legal are looking at firing squads as a backup form of execution.
Ronnie Lee Gardner was the last man killed by firing squad in the United States, in 2010. His brother, Randy Gardner, is now an advocate for ending capital punishment.
VICE News talks to Randy as well as reporter Sheryl Worsley, who witnessed the execution. We also speak with a professor who has studied capital punishment and believes that death by firing squad is actually better than death by lethal injection.

It took me 7 seconds of thought to figure this out. You don't need somebody with the title professor that study capital punishment to get your answer. Beheading with a large blade that is attached to a machine would work for another bandage slapped on society. Yes...firing squad would be better. I am glad the system and even to an extend society doesn't value philosophers anymore , it's a fun show to watch and laugh at , don't worry it's about to get much better.

The most humane, effective, easiest and cleanest way to execute someone is by asphyxiation using any type of pure gas. Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas is best as it attaches to the hemoglobin in the blood more readily than oxygen. Any gas will work as long as it blocks oxygen from entering the blood stream. Within 2 breaths you lose consciousness and in minutes you're history. I took 2 breaths of helium joking around and nearly blacked out. It was painless.

Yea why doesn't vice ask the victims families about how they feel about it? I can appreciate that this guy is sad that his brother is dead but for fuck's sake, if he killed other people in cold blood during a robbery then he damn sight deserved it. Feelings be damned. He didn't take into account the feelings of the people he killed or their families.

metallicaandchimaira Not true. Death row requires higher security than normal prisons and the numerous appeals people on death row go through are more expensive as well. It works out more expensive to keep someone on death row than in a regular prison. I'm opposed to the death penalty for moral reasons most of all, but from a financial standpoint, it doesn't make that much sense, either.

@@krabbcake8371 think about it this way most if those false executions were way back then. That means no way to get fingerprinted, no technology that we have now. If you break into some ones house and murder them there's not much you can do if you don't have a witness. You can't search for DNA is fingerprints. Usually outcast or scums commit murder. While I don’t have much sympathy for the murderer themselves, I do see that innocent family members can’t just hate the criminals guts. For all we know the family never would have known what they were capable of and always saw the murderer as a good person. None of that means that the innocent care nothing at all about the victim/s. They just never saw a monster until that day. It’s a complicated psychology that is hard to understand.

Think about the shooter, and the psychological impacts it would have of killing someone straight in the head. That is also why they use entire squads, because then the pain of murder is shared and dulled. Would you rather shoot a man straight in the face as he's crying or have people do it with in a humane and simple shot to the chest. Both ways are fairly quick and way less painful that any other forms of execution.

I guess people don’t understand what a humane death is. A humane death is one that causes no pain or suffering. The gruesomeness and the gore of firing squad deaths are irrelevant when determining how humane the killing was.

Richardezer Scrooge In order for that to happen, it would have to be an extremely high powered firearm. The brain would also still transmit pain for approvingly 12 seconds after being shot, basically before he goes completely brain dead. Even though the bullet will damage the brain severely it will not have an impact on the nervous system unless hit on the correct spot, it is still an inhumane death.

nitrogen asphyxiation as completely painless. im against executions for a couple reasons. #1 innocent people have been executed. #2 it costs more #3 it can be harder on the victims because of the extended trials and appeals where they have to keep going over it. it makes it very hard on them. However if they are going to do it then it should be painless and nitrogen asphyxiation is quick and painless. you dont feel like your suffocating as that feeling is the build up of co2 without oxygen there is no co2 and you just passout.

A firing squad looks very brutal, but it’s undoubtedly the safest way to avoid torturing someone to death. Electrocutions, Hangings, and Lethal Injection all make an effort to kill painlessly, but they can end up causing brutal suffering. Firing squad is simply people trying to kill you, so it won’t be botched.

Seems like a big factor is how the execution looks to witnesses and how it makes us feel. If the criminal unquestionably deserves to die, then it shouldn’t matter how; as long as the suffering is no more than a minute or two, it’s not too cruel. If we limit capital punishment to the truly monstrous, then anything but prolonged torture is acceptable.

The Hippocratic Oath is taken seriously by some but it is not legally binding in the USA. Violating the oath can however lead to losing a medical license and may be grounds of unprofessional conduct complaints and possibly used as part of a lawsuit. It is possible to get away with violating the oath in some cases but most doctors do not seek to do so because of their own ethics or at least avoid doing so in order to avoid the risk of potential consequences.

Lawmakers rather have a somewhat presentable body than a mutilated one to show to the murderer's family. no its not, the reason lethal injection replaced firing squad and hanging is because it was seen as a more reliable and precise way of killing some one. often times in hanging if the execution messed up the head would come off or the person would hang there for hours and had to be cut down and redone, firing squad was easy for executioners to decide to inflict pain instead of kill. while injection had its flaws it was seen as a way to check executioners with medical doctors.
