It would be nice if the world worked this way. In the end, the customer always pays. You can charge "Big Tech"(whatever that means) whatever you want; the cost to the consumer will go up to cover the new expense. In the end, you pay. Nothing is free!

These companies charge their customers to reimburse their government tax costs already so it would only be fair if they were also similarly taxed.

Of course they do, all costs get passed onto the customer, that’s true for any company, and then they add onto it to make a profit.

Should Big Tech Pay More for Internet Service? ... No, especially if the big tech company is already in progress of building an ISP-like delivery and plan to be a competitor themselves. Facebook (aka Meta) shouldn't even be on the consideration list. Google and Amazon are both already in the ISP competitor market place, so they are already paying in to support upgrades of outdated telco systems, if not deploying brand new ISP infrastructure on their own budgets. I'd rather see these companies invest money in installing new infrastructure and developing new ISP technology rather than seeing them forced to pay ISP's (i.e. AT&T, Spectrum, Comcast, Century Link/Embarq etc.) to maintain their unfair business practices and outdated infrastructures.

This 100%. We need to stop paying the old cable/telco companies that do nothing but make empty promises, & stagnant innovation in so many areas of the country while at the same time they keep raising their prices, & do everything in their power to keep compilation out, & collect an easy payday.

Local phone companies should not be forced to ALONE pitch in for rural broadband. If so,customers should have to use that company's internet and cable. Otherwise, companies like KZbin TV, Disney plus, espn, Hulu, sling etc should pitch in. They shouldn't get customers for free, but local phone companies have to pay for it.

They need to start making these smart TV's with the ability to be upgraded, so they don't become obsolete. That would solve many of these issues. All my TV's are smart ones, but I still find myself using the streaming players attached to them most of the time.

isn't that why amazon and others offering Satellite service is to make internet available to all? If a company is doing that and can prove it is one of the reason then I would say no. All this is going to do is raise the base price for the customer, you know the big companies is not just going to pay this on their own, they will pass it down to the person paying for the service. If the government wants service to be available for all then they need to build it into the laws that pertain to internet and communications. To force these companies to spread out into the rural areas.

I prefer more competition and choices over the current ISP's making more bank. Where I live in the Houston area I'm still stuck to only AT&T or Comcast/Xfinity. Been this way for decades and lower prices would be most welcome at this point.

Who pays for internet has been a long standing point of conflict. I've never understood the justification. Everyone pays for internet access, both the content providers and consumers. Bandwidth heavy services even offer to provide caching servers at ISP sites to reduce demand on interexchange transit. Often overlooked is customer subscribe to higher cost high speed first-mile services due to the proliferation of demanding streaming service. If it wasn't for streaming we would still be happy with DSL. This is just a money grab by ISPs to bulk up their bottom line. I think you hit the nail on the head about the problem of smart TVs. I used to think smart TV integration was a plus but as you mentioned the typical life expectancy of a TV will often straggle multiple technology generations. We are OTA and are still using a Sony TV we purchased for the digital transition in 2008-ish along with a Roku box for streaming.

Should big tech companies contribute to the Federal Universal Service Fund? Absolutely! Big tech companies create over 66% of the traffic on our rural networks and contribute nothing to the backhaul, bandwidth upgrades, and cost of delivering their product to the end user. It is currently a very one-sided arrangement that benefits big tech.

Fees for internet Service is rural areas - Sounds interesting, but how about having some service providers pay for it, like all the services that want you to use the web to pay your bills? (credit card companies, loan companies, phone & cable bills, etc). They're the ones benefiting through reduced costs. Obsolete SMART TVs - My last analog TV was probably 20 years old before I got rid of it. Both of my LED SMART TVs are about 10 years old and both work great, no need to get rid of them. I use them for OTA TV and watching DVDs/Blurays thru a DVD player. I'll occasionally use a free streaming service to watch a movie. Low Cost Housing - Disney recently got plans approved to expand Disneyland in Southern California, I didn't see any money being used to affordable housing near the park. Everything in Southern California is expensive

I'm surprised that someone or some company hasn't started subdivision of tiny subdivisions or tiny home communities or built tiny home cities. Really a lot of young unmarried people and older people only need one room housing which would make everything really affordable for them and would free up the family homes for others. But yeah there's huge huge profits in tiny home living if they would just start Mass producing it.

Rural America votes consistently Republican because they are opposed to socialism. So don't look for any handouts from we subscribers upon whom the cost will eventually be passed to cover internet costs to rural America. Let them call their congressional representatives to provide them with internet access.
@thedude5040
@thedude5040 3 ай бұрын
IMO: rural america already has options for fast enough internet. Yes i realize that 0.25% of americans is alot of people, but truth be told, those types of people typically have incomes and live in economies that does not heavily rely on the internet. Thus tech companies should not be taxed and the existing tax on phones should expire. The 911 access fee doesnt need to exist either as the number of people calling 911 from phones with no cell plan is so small that its not even worth the labor of collecting the taxes. Companies can just eat the small amount of traffic on their networks.

I have to call B.S. here. I live about four miles outside city limits, and only have two options for broadband internet. Either slow and bandwidth capped traditional satellite service, or terrestrial wireless that’s not very reliable or fast. And we have a lot of neighbors in the same boat. Starlink? Not on our budget! Cable doesn’t service us, DSL never came out here, fiber is likely years away, and 5G isn’t an option either. So tell me again about we have so many options!

@notajp you have more than one option now. 5 years ago you probably had 1 option. I grew up in rural America. If you want services then you can move to the city. If you want to live cheaply then live in the country with limited services, but don't expect the rest of us to help you. In my neighborhood we paid out of our own pockets to have utilities along with cable and fiber internet to come out of town. At fedex and UPS we are also no longer offering every day delivery, if you have a box it might sit for several days before a delivery is attempted. Again I hear your frustrations, but this is your choice for living outside the city. You have another option of paying the cable company or another teleco to run a wire (coax or fiber) to your house, but otherwise it's not worth the investment from the internet company to sink a lot of money just for a few customers. For reference about a hundred houses paid $20k-$28k each for services and a paved road to be brought out here

Why should these big tech companies be forced to pay for broadband programs in rural areas? They are sites people go to by choice and not ones they are forced to go to so no. I too want to say how is 179 considered a great intro price to Sunday Ticket? I get you can get most games but it does not give viewers access to all of them. This does not include MNF on ESPN. Who knows how long too ABC will carry MNF games. Sunday Ticket also does not include TNF on Prime. Netflix also picked up two regular season games. I would rather watch the NFL games for free over the air and on an antenna. Sadly though as times go, more and more paid streaming services will get content of sports and charge ridiculous prices for people to sign up to watch a few games or whatever and then cancel. So on your "cord cutting" I am baffled on what is really cutting the high cost of tv when you go on here talking about Sunday Ticket for 179 dollars. Sad though that more sports use streaming platforms to charge to watch a game if you want to watch one.
