I think a big difference between a tool like Photoshop changing the landscape vs GPT is that while photoshop certainly made it easier to create, it didn't create designs for the designers whereas GPT, Midjourney, DALL-E, etc. are actually DOING the work. AI is a 'tool' for sure, but I don't think it's a tool in the same way Figma is.

Then we gotta zoom in on actual ux, user tests, strategy work. The ux or visual designs we have right now is not even close to what is possible, so the next generation of designers will just be designing to higher standards.

But, have you used those tools? It is actually a pain in the ass to get the exact result you want. You need hours to test and explain exactly what you need to the AI so it can give it to you. Also, clients dont know sheit about design, so if explaining a design for AI is complicated, imaging for a client!! Clients don't even know what they want neither what they need. I even work with clients that don't even know the difference between a design for mobile and for Desktop (they think the Desktop design must be the same always). So, the most important thing here is to know how to use the tool, and also, the ones that know that the tool exist are us, there are maaaaaaany people that doesn't even know it.

I feel like whatever an AI can do in terms of AI can be done better by getting a good human to go over it afterwards with their expertise. AI could also of course save tons of time with things like: * AI generating an initial concept - like a dribbble design personalised to your project * Sketch to design to speed up the manual work and tons more.

Yes!! You'll expand the design idea and imagination with those tools. TBH So many factor which even untrained peoples and clients can pointing out which design better than another although they've used identical tools. Of course It will overcrowded for a while, but that will back just like what happen with Wedding & Family Photo services - Audio Record & Mixing services , Art Decor or other form of skill based services, which need dedicated people, time and efforts to master it

I mean he's gotta protect his job too, there will be no genuine looking into the mirror. We will only see what happens with design work. I feel (feel!) That it would be similar as other parts of automation where you need just handful of people watching over what's happening.

I agree with your thoughts here. I do not think AI will end the career of a graphic designer. I tried ChatGPT today for the first time and it is definitely very promising and the things it is capable of doing to assist designers who use it as a tool is amazing BUT I do think it is in it's beginning stages. Even IF it could end a creatives career, its not happening anytime soon in my opinion. Love the video and also the AI tools video, thanks for your content!

I'm optimistic about the ability of AI to mimic creative results that satisfy human aesthetics. I'm not as optimistic about humans as valuable contributors to that process in the eyes of corporations (who will also likely be driven by AI). This technological evolution may reach a fever pitch that doesn't repeat or rhyme with the past phases we've seen. It may take another decade or so, but I've got a 3 and 5 year old. Before they even get to the work force, countless industries will have been turned upside down. I don't know how to prepare them. The education system doesn't know how to prepare them. The idea of a career as a prompt engineer may become obsolete as quickly as it arrived. "AI as a tool" is true for now, but at some unknown point, AI will be a hammer sans the handle. Taking monetary concerns out of the equation, I think the future of AI could be great for humans. We can start learning skills and trades because we love them and want to subjectively experience them rather than turn them into a good in exchange for currency. If we can't beat AI at our own jobs, then we can start thinking differently about our purpose for staying busy and being creative.

I understand your point, but the AI era is quite scary because these things learn and understand, while programs like Photoshop were just simple tools to complete the task. That's why it's quite scary, and also business owners will ignore designers if they just learn prompts. So to me, yes, most careers will be replaced, including designers, though it will go slowly to reach the full extent.

What's the difference between a prompt generated "website design" and a template from themeforest. How is the prompt a gamechanger when it doesn't even have any type of content architecture, typography, actually usable colours, editing capabilities... anything really. In other words why would a vague picture of a website beat an actual design, and how is said businessman going to use that picture?

AI is not like a type writer. AI has the ability to one day learn on it's own and expand to every single industry. I don't think it will happen this year, or next year, but in 15 years if we don't have an AI that can make websites with perfect UX and UI I think we fucked up.

Ai can learn and relearn a million times more than a human can in a very short time. I think that argument false and kinda arrogant. The thing about what's makes AI a real viable existential threat to the industry is it can learn in a minute what a human can learn in a hundred years, evolve by itself and learn everything that makes a craftsman a craftsman, sooner it will not be restrained by just a software, in a few months it will have hands and eyes too. It's becoming a "all-knowing working human" in a sense. This thing moves fast, so whatever that's left for us right now, might be gone sooner than we think.

that's a nice thought, but what if everyone's job eventually becomes a prompt engineer? your story will still make sense as there will be more creatives but there will no longer be the need to use the tools we are using now, just like setting type. And, keep in mind this whole process is getting faster and faster and faster. As a designer since the 90's I honestly don't believe anything I'm doing can't be automated. And I worked for some of the biggest brands out there. IMO anyone who thinks they are special will have a rude awaking here soon. 1 year or 5, I'm not sure, maybe you'll be one of the last, but I am already humbled.

@@77NickDale I'm just trying to express the idea of quitting is an illusion. If you spent 10 years building a castle and then stopped, it seems like you are very passionate that would be quitting. From my perspective, it wouldn't be quitting because there are still 19 years of the castle completed. It's still there. Now there is a machine that can make a copy of the castle that was built and can print more. You said you couldn't understand why I would just quit and move on, or how could I? Well why would I just want to keep working on that same castle when I can now go on an adventure printing out many different castles all over the place, any way I want, many different styles. You can stay but I'm moving on.

AI can't even beat templates let alone web designers. A tool that can't even do typography isn't a threat in any capacity. Anyone that thinks that Midjourney/ChatGPT will replace web designers either doesn't understand web design, hasn't even tried the tools in actual work or is just trying to get some views. Unfortunately all this attention seeking is going to make people lowball our work.

I totally agree that AI isn't quite there yet when it comes to beating templates or web designers, especially stuff like typography. But, we can't ignore how fast tech like ChatGPT is improving. I have accepted my fate, though I will continue until my last contract ends. How would I use AI to improve this page? Well I only have one user experience to pull from, I could gather more sure but would my analysis of that data really be accurate? AI will pull perfect user behavior from billions to appeal to the prevailing habits, things you and I didn't even know where an issue. So it's not how would I use AI, it's why would AI even need me.
