after college, I went straight into law school so I didn't have to look for a job. If you meant after law school then it wasn't easy but it wasn't super difficult. It depends what types of jobs you are looking for, I was willing to take anything law related (even if it was a legal assistant).

law firm is working at a law firm where you handle many different clients and cases. working in house means you work at a company in their legal department as a lawyer for the company. that means you are an employee of the company and represent the company in all their legal issues.

@jessp5775
@jessp5775 6 жыл бұрын
it’s a very very stressful job. If people want their prescriptions now they want it now. You’re working on a prescription and someone comes in and their script isn’t ready you have to drop everything and work on it. Moreover, there are multiple cases where there’s 10 or more people waiting and you have to work on them as fast as possible. You’re constantly running and running trying to dispense 200 or more prescriptions a day. There are a lot of details you have to pay attention to for each patient and you also have to deal with their insurances. Also, the machine isn’t always the one counting and scanning. You have to be really good at multitasking and multitasking well. You absolutely cannot mess up a patient’s prescription. You also have to be extremely patient with the customers. These are just some things to consider if you want to become a pharmacist or a Phamarcy technician or if you want to be a clerk there. They all have different roles but they all absolutely have to be careful.

I quit medical school to go into law and it seems like one of the best decisions I've ever made. I love reading, writing, debating, and I really am passionate about the law. I also did the same! I think that law school gives you a more critical mind. In med school it was just learning biological facts without being critical. But this is normal, what would be the point to be critical to the truth ? I didn’t felt that it was helping me growing as a person, because this wasn’t what I wanted to be and I wanted to grow different skills. When I left med school and went to law school, I was so unsure about my decision but now I just regret to not having the guts to quit sooner. With that experience, I learned that life is a journey and soon or later you’ll always come back to what you truly love in life.

I am a litigator in Florida - practicing law for almost 20 years. There is a lot of bad and a lot of good about becoming a lawyer. Thank you for sharing your insight, and you make a lot of good points. As far as helping people - there are many lawyers who have the internal fortitude to keep that as their priority throughout their career - no matter whether or not they will make money. Sure - there are many who get jaded or who forget the reason they went into law, those are the bad apples in the industry. But there are a lot (well, at least a few) really good ones out there. P.S. - I worked at law firms most of my career, and I almost never spent more than 40 hours in the office. Sure, there were projects on which I worked long hours, even overnight. But those were fun and interesting. Big law may require such long hours - but you can be smart and succeed in law without killing yourself.

U can. I almost went to law school, but after thorough investigation I didn't. I'm in a different field which is also stressful. I'm yet to find a professional career that's not stressful in the US, but it's not so in other countries where work life balance is appreciated. If u do go, consider going part-time, take the least number of courses possible at a time, so you can really enjoy it & actually learn. Don't do it the full time "American style" where they educate u wrapped in a "stress test" by throwing too much at u to see if u break." That's what full time law school is & for no sensible reason other than some people behind the scenes lower & raise barriers to keep numbers where they want it. I've lived in other countries where people school happily & happily work professional careers for many years & never get burned out because they have realistic expectations and work life balance, which doesn't exist in the US cos it's capitalistic...

@@C3yl0 Your suggestion has a few unstated premises. First, you assume that people not obsessed with practicing law are in some way blocking others from entering the field. Second, that there is a large pool of enthusiastic people who want to be lawyers. Third, that clients will be well served by the replacement of the former with the latter. Read Harper's "The Lawyer Bubble," and confirm his sources, or provide some research to support your priors. I would love to believe your three assumptions, but I haven't seen reliable evidence supporting them.

I love writing and reading, and generally, I work pretty well in a high-stress environment. The only thing that I’m really scared of is “losing a piece of my soul” (it sounds dramatic I know)... Academically, the only thing I i’m actually gifted in is digesting information that I read, and being able to use it(mostly history and politics). I think I actually need law to be happy. One thing I learned from reading tons of opinions in law school is that before the judges found any reasoning, they’ve already made the decision and the reasoning (including but not limited to precedents, plain meaning interpretation, legislative history, etc) is there just to justify their decisions, I.e. they made decisions first then found reasonings to justify their decisions. We ordinary people make our decisions the same way. Once we’ve made our decisions, we’re always “willfully blind” to the negative factors and we only look at this factors that support our decisions. This is ok because life is unpredictable and sometimes we just need to follow our heart.

Everyone has a different path and can adjust their career/life as it suits them. There are always different possibilities as a lawyer/doctor/engineer/etc to work and have a balanced life (or not, if you want you can work like crazy in nearly EVERY profession). If you believe that it can be done, then you are right. People, do not wait to see a video of someone that did it so you can go there and do it yourself. Just do it! Yeah, life is not easy, you are probably going to think that you should have done it differently at some point, but that shaped you and got you where you are. I know lawyers, doctors, engineers, dentists that are called to work in the middle of the night...because they chose that way. You can be a doctor and work in a office or a lab and never be "disturbed by patients" (and we NEED those kind of doctors). What I am trying to say is that you will always have tons of possibilities, and if you do not then just create them. PS.: I am not criticizing Brittany. I know people ask for this kind of video. I decided to watch it because I was curious about what she had to say about law school/career and I realize that it is pretty damn close to what I think about med school and it is probably the same for other careers if you take it seriously.

I've wanted to be a corporate lawyer since I was 7 years old. Wanted to be an anesthesiologist, but realized I'm not interested in medical stuff. Switched to law. Currently a junior in college. I have a full ride, and my job will be paying for law school for me. Lately I've been feeling like I'm not all that interested anymore. I have a huge passion for nature and helping all walks of life, and thinking of switching majors. I feel a bit lost. It's either money (lawyer) or live a more basic life doing something that I dont know yet but will bring joy. Do you think you could grow to really like being a corporate lawyer once you become one if you once had that passion? I dont want to not do it, and disappoint myself.
@BrittanyTran
@BrittanyTran 6 жыл бұрын
honestly, I don't know that you would be able to grow the passion. Could you do something law related but with nature? Maybe an environmental lawyer or something that helps what you're passionate for? That might help to get rid of the mundane legal work you'll be doing. As I'm sure you know, just because you make a lot of money it won't mean that you will be happy and I would say sacrifice money for doing what you love. Maybe try to find people who are doing things you are interested in and ask them how they like it etc.

"we must make the goal conform to the individual, rather than make the individual conform to the goal" - Hunter S. Thompson. If who you are as a person doesn't align with the characteristics of a lawyer, really think hard about your career choice. Keep in mind, you change as you age with new perspectives and experiences, hence why you changed your mind about being an anesthesiologist; it's normal. In other words, find careers that will fit who you are as a unique individual, rather then finding the next big salary profession and CHANGING yourself just to fit that role. Would you change who you are fundamentally just to date or marry someone? It's the same with jobs, and in my humble opinion, that's why people have mid-life crisis career-wise.

Nature is overrated. Being poor with no influence doesn't help nature. I'd say, don't switch majors since you're getting a free ride for school. Pass the bar, earn tons of money, network with people in government/businesses and then you'll be able to fund your passion/interests.

After being a paralegal for 10 years, realizing this is all I know now, and wanting to have a more direct impact with clients, I decided to take the lawyer track. Instead of law school, I'm in a law reader program. I can't imagine the stress of the bar with $160,000 in debt hanging over my head. I am stressed enough about passing the bar in a couple years, but it would be so much worse to have such enormous debt and fail. Should I pass though, my plan is to be a guardian ad litem to help the kids going through the system.

@@BrittanyTran - Three years later I found myself back at this video and realized that you asked what the law reader program was! Four states (Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and California) allow a student to study the law under the supervision of an attorney in a law office instead of at a law school. During that time, the student submits examinations given to him/ her by the supervising attorney to the bar examiners. After 3 or 4 years of study, the student is qualified to take the bar exam. The student does not receive a JD or any type of certification, he/she is just permitted to take the bar exam. A pass means licensure as an attorney. Fortunately, I did pass my first time and I am now a qualified guardian ad litem for children!

Another thing to add is that the work schedule and work/life balance also varies greatly depending on your practice area. Some disciplines are more stressful and chaotic than others - e.g. litigation can be crazy, especially during trial, but intellectual property often has very regular schedules and tends to be more predictable. There are a lot of different kinds of law and a lot of different kinds of lawyers! I agree that research is key!

Great video!! If you're watching and considering going to law school please, please watch and listen carefully! I was like many of you a few years ago and sooooo many people told me to do my research and listen carefully to other lawyers about going to law school. I did, but I don't think I listened enough. I graduated from law school in 2017. I have a decent non-law job now that I got right after graduation but honestly I should not have gone. I don't want to go so far as to say that I'm "haunted" by my decision to go to law school, but I definitely regret it. It's the sacrifice and the time commitment that you really need to pay attention too. Law school and the legal profession really take over your entire life. If you have other hobbies or other interests or other things that are very important to you, then you probably should not go to law school. The reality is, your career will take over your life for many, many years. For some people, that's just fine. They're okay with the sacrifice and are able to put their head down and just grind. But you have to be honest with yourself and really be aware of what you're getting into! The cost of going to law school timewise, moneywise, and stresswise is really not worth it if you're just going to "try it out." Even if you graduate and pass the bar exam, it's a very difficult and competitive career. It's hard to get a job or find your niche. I actually found that most lawyers and law students were NOT outgoing, social people. The trial lawyers are actually a very small percentage of lawyers. Most lawyers I met are introverted anti-social types. That should tell you more about the reality of the profession. Personally, I was definitely an outgoing person and showed a very strong aptitude for trial work. But it's such a small niche of the law, that if you're not fully dedicated and can't make the right connections, it's going to be very hard for you to find your way. However, be sure to talk to as many lawyers (of all types) as you can. Many, many lawyers I talk to have a negative perception of the career (honestly most.) However, there are plenty of others who are fine with it or even happy practicing! Make sure you talk to these people too, but try to get them to be HONEST. Don't settle for the bullshit, scripted, "this is what i'm supposed to say," stock answers. Really get into it with them about the time commitments, stress commitments, and the MONEY. I know it's impolite to ask about money, but my advice is don't be afraid. That's why most people get into this profession. There's too much at stake, and lawyers sacrifice too much to not be honest about discussing money. I'd be wary of lawyers who avoid discussing this aspect of the job.

This video made me rethink my decision of applying for law school as my mean goal in life is to have my own successful business, travel the world without being tied to a strict schedule, invest in properties, create my own fashion brand, talk about law of attraction and money management on KZbin. I should probably study something more related to my interests than working that hard on a law degree just for the prestige that comes from saying that you are a lawyer. I don’t think that other people’s recognition would make my life any happier. Doing what I really want in life and achieving my personal goals would make me much happier. I also want to get married and start a family in about 5 years and be able to be present for my children while running my own business from home. So starting law school now with the aim to never become a lawyer but just for recognition on my cv is probably not the best idea I think. Thanks for making this video! Very honest and helpful ❤️

Ok, let me stop you right there because you're contradicting yourself. From what I gather from this video, you became a lawyer purely based on your circumstances and going with the flow of what you were doing. It may have been chaotic when you think back on your life and the decisions you made to get you where you are but there was some order to that chaos. That in my mind is the closest anyone is going to get to passion before committing 100% of their time. Let me give you an example: there is absolutely no way you will ever be able to truly know what it's like to be a lawyer until you actually become one. You may have a very good idea when you're studying in law school, you may talk to a lot of lawyers and you may apply to a lot of law firms but you will never truly know what it feels like to become a lawyer until you actually become one. There is no passion, there is only a leap of faith you have to take where there is a 50/50 chance things work out as you find you'll grow into your career and if just one tiny thing doesn't completely check out, you bail and move on to the next thing. Also let's face it, the grass is always going to be greener on the other side and you're always going to hate the job you do. I had a friend who was ultra passionate about graphic design and his dream was always to be paid to be a graphic designer. Now that he finally has that job, he hates it and is actually thinking about going into programming. Don't fall into the trap of waiting for your dream job or finding your true passion. It doesn't exist! Just go with whatever feels right and keep an open mind as you take in as much as you can. You'll have it figured out eventually..

definitely, you won't know until you actually work as a lawyer. the point of my video was to make people think about why they are becoming a lawyer and the motivations behind it. I think a lot of people who are in high school or younger just want to be lawyers because they think they will make a lot of money and their parents tell them to. I wanted to be honest in telling them what to expect if they do become lawyers. Just so they think twice before committing to that career path :)

Does your friend like programming? Im considering either law school or going back to school for programming

@@itsfuckinglauren depends what you like. I prefer programming though. It's more challenging, you get to work for more industries and the work environment and work life balance is a lot better. Another big advantage is that you will never experience more creative and professional freedom than working as a web developer. The only challenges are that technology is always changing and you continuously have to adapt yourself to it and your ability to manage people and communicate problems, solutions and expectations. But again, it's up to you m8.

I needed to hear this. Thank you. First generation Americans from low-economic backgrounds can really benefit from videos like this. I personally don’t know any lawyers who I would be able to have this talk with. So thanks again.

Very engaging Brit. My friends are sort of pressuring me into going to law school because it's why I came to America but despite how disappointed I make them, I have to think about my future life. Thank you for this.

Thank you! This is good to hear, as someone who casually says maybe I’ll be a lawyer, from time to time.

Having no special skills or passion is a common theme. But it's not tragic. It's fun to learn new skills and learn a trade you can make a living at. There's always something enjoyable about legal work, and you don't need to be passionate to enjoy your work and build up a nice career, you just have to have respect for your work, and continually strive to do it well. I went to law school because the construction industry collapsed in my region back in '06, and I needed find a way to make a living. It was a good decision. But I had savings, and went to an affordable state school in the upper Midwest, so my debt was very manageable. This helped make my legal career more flexible and portable. Thank you for sharing your video. I enjoyed it.

I'm 15 and I'm not exactly sure what I want to do when I get older. I truly want a good job like a Lawyer so I can prove to the rest of my family that I'm better than my parents and older siblings..

I love how you summarized everything about becoming a lawyer. What i hate about myself is that English is my second language and I really work hard to improve my English skills, however i find it frustrating that I can't really understand every word in English. Also im that type of guy who likes to argue all time and never let anyone prove me wrong because i assure that every info i have searched about is 100% true. Lastly, I love being a defence attorney cause I think solving crimes and stopping violence is my passion and I really want to create a peaceful and loving community. Money is not an issue for me and i doubt it would be hard at the beginning of law school but later on i hope it becomes easier. I just want to know your advice about my issue. Thank you :)

being a defense attorney is difficult work but if you have the passion for it then you should pursue it. would you want to practice in the United States? or a country with English as the main language? Definitely seek to improve your verbal and writing skills because as a defense attorney you will need to speak in front of the judge, jury and opposing counsel as well as writing briefs.

Is there different ways to improve my language skills since you know better and you have experienced everything in law school. I personally think that reading books is an excellent way to improve it but some people tell me that if you don't engage with people who speak different language like English. You might find it extremely hard to learn faster and I don't really go out a lot.

yes, I would say also practicing speaking with other English speakers or people who speak English.
