I pick my parts at Microcenter and have them put it together. It is a time saver vs building yourself and the time of setting up the work environment for the build.

I built my computer right before residency. The inside isn’t pretty, but it worked the first time I turned it on. Got each component on a discount and it cost me around $600 + 1 day to build versus $1000 prebuilt. Since then, I’ve added an 1TB SSD and new ram. Still able to play all the games coming out nowadays.

Honestly, always built my PCs/friends/family PCs myself. But with my last one, I got lazy and went with NZXT. Part prices were freaking crazy during Covid, and NZXT was still offering MSRP on parts plus the $99 build fee. Worth it to get parts at MSRP and a very clean, professional build. If I could've got parts (GPU in particular) for MSRP, definitely would've built it myself. But if another family member comes to me wanting a PC, I'm going to build one out on NZXT and just charge them $100 to reclaim the build fee (usually have built them for free + parts cost, because I enjoy it).

Either way, be sure to check for upgradability. Better to pay now than have a doorstop later. A piece of advice I got when I ordered my first PC “Just know that between the time you order and when you receive it, it will already be obsolete.”

Back in May/2022, I had to buy a prebuilt. Building my own cost 3X more. Computer components still cost waaay to much in Canada 🇨🇦.

If you watch Gamers Nexus you know how difficult it is for system integrators to get the details right as well as a custom builder. On the other hand, I lost an evening last week trying to rewire my power cables and replace my power supply because I could not properly access the 8-pin CPU header deeply recessed in my case. I’m fairly resigned I’ll have to take the motherboard out of the case to finish the job. I dislike building, but I have an amazing friend who is willing to do the parts I can’t see or don’t have the dexterity to do, and that alone makes DIY worth it to me. Chasing a silent system I’m also incredibly picky about my part selection, and never satisfied with the balance of GPU power and silence (and price and thermals of course). The only mainstream manufacturer who has computer acoustics right is Apple, and they’re a non-starter for gaming, so I buy my computers from Apple, and build my gaming computer myself. :)

Most prebuilts fail at something and are cursed with the spirit of alma also they awful psu, awful cooling, awful build quality, and a crapton of bloatware, I could go on for 8000 years telling you the reasons not to buy a prebuilt and just build it your self because it is easier than figuring out what 1+2 is and it costs a third of the price of the prebuilt with WAY BETTER HARDWARE or just pay someone else to build your PC it is just really expensive to pay someone else though
