I remember those going through the woods carrying logs that my grandmother had sold. It was really wet and even those big traction tires were having trouble. Left 5 foot deep ruts. They are something to see when they're operating. Hopefully the buy will work out for you, Wily! Thanks for sharing!

Hey Wily. I had a friend here in TN..he has passed now. He was a logger all his life. He told me that he had a skidder catch fire and burn up years ago. I asked him why they was so bad to catch fire..he said..oil leaks catch chaff, it will catch fire, He said a line would bust and spray oil on hot motor..he sit there a minute and said..Skidders are bad about catching fire when you get 3 payments behind. Be safe

Yeah, those skidders are fun to run! Years ago I worked for the farmers and running a rice cart with a big Steiger was exciting to run in the muddy rice fields hauling loads of rice from the combines to the haul trucks! Good times in the good ole days Wiley, same thing as the woods but in the muddy rice fields! The black gumbo mud was the worst when the water was evaporating and that’s when that old mud would stink and get real sticky and the dual wheel tractors couldn’t even pull into it! That mud was so sticky it would turn the duals into one big wide slick wheel! We could only run single wheel tractors and I’ve seen during one year the drought hit in a crazy way that one farmer had a big Massey Ferguson combine and he had tracks for it! He had to cut all the rice for all the farmers around and he had a old ass no cab Massey Ferguson 4 wheel drive tractor with tracks on it hauling rice to the trucks! He had tracks for that old tractor! We all just watched him go through that bad stuff! I still don’t know why they just didn’t crank up the well and flood the field enough for the mud to clean off the tires! Maybe times were just that bad for running that old 671 Detroit rice pump! I’m not sure why not put some water in it but maybe it was because so much down rice in the fields! Not sure! Thanks for sharing y’all, Kirk from Louisiana sending prayers to you and your family! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thank you for sharing that. I was Jacob’s age or a little older I delivered a skidder somewhere out there and I seen the rice fields and I did not have a clue what it was growing Got my first taste and I am spelling it wrong “boudan” from a old run down looking place but the driver knew where to stop It was great That seems like a lifetime ago Thank you for watching

I sure don't want to upset ya Wily as I got some stories about these skidders.... your older than me if yer 80 years old... makes me jealous as I am 73 and can't walk no more. I was fresh out of the army in seventy, between girlfriends and no dang job... our president was down on logging of any kind... so getting a job in the woods was right hard to do. Even just telling this little bit reminds me of several stories between this one. I was one big lad intent on just being a truck driver on long log trucks... didn't much care to drive the little truck and pup trailers as there wasn't no lowboy style long trailers that you could just keep stacking short logs on, on our side of the country... Roseburg Ore. Now I said Roseburg but we traveled up to six's river country, and that ground was made for goats only, an how a tree ever decided to grow on ground that steep is beyond me. It would take a minute or three to work your way to the top.., hook the chokers to the turn of logs ya wanted.... one time where chokers were better than having a grapple only. There was times the tires never even come close to the ground an just hanging by the cable was what ya was praying it did not break at this time. Ya got down the hill letting out your drum line till you found a spot to get the rear tires hooked into and then winch down everything back up to the back of the machine yet still hold good enough to lower yourself to the next pull point. I had a quota of five long logger truckloads of logs a day. It doesn't take long to figure that doing the hotroding didn't get more logs, it got more broken chokers and stuff broken on the skidders. That is where thing are interesting to me. If any piece of equipment ever got better in designs, I will put in with you... skidders like the garrett was just figuring things out and making the necessary changes. I had got real used to the tiller steering and so a steering wheel was just in the way as you hardly needed to steer till you were on ground that was a skid trail. I would of killed to have a grapple on ground like you have there. Up on very steep ground would of probably never done so good. That burnt machine should go back down to a bare frame, then brought back up but the cost would render it too expensive. I see a lot of good metal even though it got hot, if its not warped too bad, it would hold glass again and a welder will make any of the bracketry. I hate making a decision to save a hose or replace it but when its buried down deep in the bowels of it, short of crazy... got to put it in new. I guess a guy could build a machine to test the hoses but that is not a definite way because they are good till they ain't. One thing the burnt one has is the long wheelbase and boy howdy will that ever work for you getting a turn out of the brush. I guess the problem for you is not owning a good shop building where you have a gantry to lift and separate stuff like getting a engine out to replace parts and pieces. If you fix it right, the next owner can't afford all the stuff you have to replace and cost comes up to unobtainium. I would just guess they still make a skidder close to what these look like but with all the changes to them over the years... might not even look close as they used to look... must of been tons of logging back in your day as well.

@DontbeWily Жыл бұрын
It’s hard to hit that number with as much work that needs to be done on this one. If it was tight and right it would not surprise me it bringing 25 maybe 30k with new rubber. I mean it would have to be a good machine and remember this one has a small winch I am not sure it is worth it to rebuild it from a used equipment guy outlook say you get it for 7-8. You will drop 8k in tires 4k in engine rebuild 4 k in parts for pins and bushings And that don’t include the unseen issues or freight Probably best to part out so you got to buy it and be able sit on it for a long time to get your money back and make some You didn’t ask for all that but That’s just my thought on it
