Should I buy an oil free air compressor?

Oil free air compressors use parts that are pre-lubricated with a material, such as Teflon, that keeps them from wearing out due to friction and prevents you from having to constantly oil-up your air compressor.

Excellent video I learned a long time ago oil over oil free. I have that same Dewalt compressor after 12 years all I have done is change the reeds and oil. Its been 5yr since I replaced those and still a great compressor. BTW I am a carpenter and that compressor will run 2-3 guns framing. 2 guns sheathing. ❤ great video again thank you

I have the same Porter Cable, oil-less air compressor. I bought it used about 4 years ago and it still works well. It's only good for very light duty air tools, like nailers and pumping tires but that's all I need right now. (retired). Good information.

I have an oil less compressor with an air filter and it's been running for about 20 years, I've never had any problems with it, and it was a cheap Walmart compressor too. It's still going today and no loss of compression either,

Makita air compressors use a cast iron compressor block. Emglo uses a cast iron compressor block as well. Eagle uses an aluminum block with a cast iron insert in their compressor blocks. Oiled compressor are by far better made than any oil-less compressor. Oil-free compressors are good if you can get one of the earlier Coleman/Sanborn compressors that have +5 hp and can also run most air tools as well. Even if you have to buy a second hand air compressor, buy either a Makita, Emglo, or an Eagle compressor as these are the best of the best compressors that will last +20 years as long as one changes the compressor oil once every 4 or 5 years. I have the Clarke AC 2002 and this small but barely portable compressor will do almost everything in a pinch and is small and light enough to haul anywhere with minimal grunt work (after all the AC 2002 will do a full 5 CFM at 90 PSI). Nice video and explanation with regards to oil-free air compressors! BTW ~ Small oil-free air compressors are noisy as heck and since these compressor lack lubrication parts inside the compressor will be prone to much more vibration thus causing the parts inside the compressor to fail and break over time. I have had this happen with a 12 volt Slime car tire air compressor I used for filling my tires. Though the Slime 12 volt tire air compressor did last 7 years and I did picked that up used as well from a local Thrift store. Since there is no "power"or "combustion" cycle in an oiled compressor any good synthetic 20W or 30W oil should easily last +10 years in any oil air compressor. Many automotive shops also just use any 20W or 30W automotive engine oil and have had zero problems with any of their oiled compressor whatsoever. Oil-free air compressors are designed to be disposable and will typically last 200 ~ 1000 working hours with the best oil free models lasting upwards of 2000 working hours. Oil-less air compressors use a sealed bearing around the big journal end of the connecting rod thus eliminating the need for oil and neoprene seals to seal in the air in the compression area. Do your own research as one gets what they pay for. This is the primary reason why oil-free compressors are so cheap and widely available at almost any hardware store. Oil-free air compressors are OK for the weekend home DIY-selfers but for any serious or contractor work an oiled compressor is a 100% must have as contractors require their equipment to work at anytime of the day and perform 24/7 if necessary.

He may mention this as I'm commenting before it's over lol but if you get an oiled compressor and plan to do any painting make sure you get an oil filter for the outlet. There will be water in either style and both needs a water filter but the oil is another beast that will destroy your paint job so needs a combo oil/water filter.

good info it also depends on what your needs are. I had a rockworth 3 gal hotdog for 12 years cost was less then 50 bucks and while I never used it daily I did use it a lot so did family friends and neighbors who I would loan it out to. it finally gave out and that 99 dollar porter cable is in it's place for my needs it isn't worth paying the extra cash for a model like that Dewalt. If I was like a guy doing a handyman type small business I would be buying that Dewalt without a doubt.

I don't agree about the gauges but that statement about the manifolds is correct. If you break the manifold it may cost almost as much as a new compressor even if you can get one. The gauges aren't anything special you don't have to replace them with the exact same ones just ones which have the same size pipe thread (1/8 or 1/4 NPT) and display the same range of pressures. I have used the Porter Cable C2002 and it is loud enough to be more than annoying. As it is I have some high frequency hearing loss (my doctor says it is normal for my age) and don't want to make it worse. I am looking at a used Husky oil lubricated compressor on Tuesday and if it works I will buy that to serve my future needs.

You are certainly right about the very high noise level of *most* oil-free compressors...very annoying and can be damaging to your hearing. There are some quieter operating oil-free units out there by California Air Tools and Hitachi, but these units produce less CFM than a typical oil-free unit. I always recommend oil-bath units due to the quieter operation and longevity, but oil-free units have their place as well. As for the gauges, you're right about that. The only reason one may not be able to use generic gauges is if there is a plastic panel that covers the manifold and gauge faces...if a unit uses a small diameter casing which is made for that unit and a panel fits directly over it to accept that size, you wouldn't be able to use a gauge with a larger diameter casing, as the panel won't be able to fit over it. But you could cut out a larger hole in the panel covering, of course. Just a little bit of info to flesh out your comment. Thanks for contributing!

I've git a lot of Dewalt tools and get great service out of them except for the air compressor. It's oil free, has a 20 gallon tank and the compressor id mounted on top. It's the noisiest one that I have ever owned and takes forever to build up pressure.

You are certainly correct! This important fact was missed in the video as we tried to remember all of the pros and cons. An oil filter and gravity filter is certainly necessary on oil-bath units if spray painting or sandblasting...basically any application where you don't want oil incorporated into the outlet air. That Porter Cable is for small car tires, bicycles, etc. It’s cheap and it should last 5 to 10 years and it’s fine for most people. When it breaks you throw it away. Most people don’t want to repair a $100 air compressor anyway.

That piston is 4 times bigger than the one on the puny little 3 gallon hotdog style Campbell hausfeld I first bought. Takes forever and a day to air up a tire. Glad I moved on up to a bit bigger 20 gallon Campbell hausfeld with 5.5 cfm at 90psi. Works perfect for all I need airing up tires and other inflatables as well as air impact and even a cutoff tool.

@@cba8351 The Dewalt belt friven 5 gallon oiled compressor. I wanted oil lubed for the output and only makes sense to have pistons oiled. Worked very well for the past few projects we had running 2 air framing nailers at the same time. Big difference from using a 2 gallon 'hotdog' compressor for years. Quiet, portable, plenty of SCFI, great for tire inflations...a small bother or wrist contorting to drain water (if any) at the bottom. All in all...EXCELLENT.

Hello, To me it looks like you’re comparing “apples to oranges” with these two compressors (price points are the difference in construction styles)... I owned the original Emglo twin tank 4 gallon model and had it for 10 years before I chose to sell it to a friend... I upgraded to the “Masters Series”, the one with the manifold in the center between the tanks(you don’t like) also an Emglo... It is working Perfectly fine(16 years later)...! You should actually not even mention Dewalt because it’s not Truly a Dewalt... B&D owns the company Emglo... Emglo makes the compressors and they paint them yellow for Dewalt... You can still buy them in blue...

Correct, the Emglo name (only) was purchased by DeWalt in the early aughts, and Stanley Black & Decker now owns the name Emglo and build units under the Emglo name with the black and yellow paint. These are not true Emglo compressors. You can still get an Emglo, however, they now go by the name "Jenny, Inc.". The Jenny units are certainly better. Jenny took over the Emglo factory in Somerset, PA and they are still building great air compressors. However, the old Emglo and current DeWalt oil-bath direct-drive air compressors (like you see in this video) do NOT use the same Fini pumps that are on the older models, they're now made in China and are not the build quality of the old Fini pumps. Hopefully this gives some helpful insight into the DeWalt/Emglo confusion.

Trade-offs abound; tank volume is important for things like sprinkler blow-out, as the pump is only compressing air into that storage tank, not actively providing the immediate air flow through the output hose. Do you know whether there are appropriate lubricants that benefit "oilless" pumps piston seals, which appear to be a constant weak point of such economy units?

Thanks for the comment! You're right about air tank capacity....for such applications as you mention, a larger air capacity ideal. As for your question on oil-less piston ring lubricants: manufacturers do not recommend any type of lubricant on their oil-less units. The piston rings are Teflon coated and you're correct, is the major weak point of any oil-less compressor. These units aren't meant to be used like an oil-bath unit, so if you find these rings constantly wear out I would recommend an oil-bath unit. The duty cycle is quite a bit lower for oil-less units because of this weak point.

Excellent explanation and presentation of the differences. I just purchased a 1.2 gal Bostitch oilless compressor (CAP1512-OF) rated at 2.8 SCFM @ 90 psi. I've already used it to pump up tires on my cars, pickup, boat and utility trailers, etc, and it works great. Prior to this compressor I bought a Dewalt battery-powered (3ah) "portable inflator", but it took 5 times longer than the Bostitch to pump up any tire -- I returned it. Interestingly, I was unable to get any SCFM rating from Dewalt, but I did find a website that showed a 0.5 SCFM airflow, which makes perfect sense based on my own experience. I also have a "contractor quality" CH dual-tank wheelbarrow style engine-driven compressor that I use for bigger jobs -- that one has a "made in USA" cast iron air pump that hasn't missed a beat in more than 10 years of use. It seems that some people expect a 20VDC battery powered compressor to perform at the same level as a 120VDC compressor, but they're in a completely different realm. FYI, my 2500 watt "peak" Harbor Freight inverter generator didn't skip a beat when powering the Bostitch compressor. IMO, that cute little compressor is the perfect combination of light weight, airflow and efficiency for light duty garage and home projects. I'm looking for a portable air compressor that will provide air for my hypertherm plasma cutter. Manual says it needs 6scfm@90psi I narrowed my search to two compressors Dewalt D55146 which is rated at 5scfm@90psi, max pressure of 225psi, oil free Makita MAC5200 6.5cfm@90psi, max pressure of 140psi, cast iron cylinder oil-lubricated I have a couple of questions: What do you think of these two compressors? The Makita seems to be built better. Would the Dewalt MK246 (D55153) you show be able to keep up with the demand since cutting is not done continuously?

Oil-free units are great and require less maintenance, true, but really are meant for infrequent to moderately frequent use. So, I would simply take this into consideration based on the frequency of use.

Thanks for the info, but a suggestion and a criticism... You can get sound meter apps for smart phones. A quick and dirty way to measure the relative loudness when comparing pump noises, not 100% percent accurate but just to demonstrate volume from 3 feet away, (as an example). When you ran them and mentioned how fast they were pumping up, the DeWalt was already at ~80psi before you turned it on, whilst the other was basically at zero. I've no doubt the DeWalt is a better unit, and there was no bias intended but it's just a bad look, which can make you appear biased. Cheers.

I have to admit, I'm not familiar with the Fuji turbine mini mite. But for portability, either an oil-bath or oil-free unit will work for you. However, if you are using the compressor for an application like spray painting where you can't have any moisture getting through the air line, I'd go with an oil-free unit. These units are also ideal for weekend warrior projects. If you'll be using it very frequently, I'd go for an oil-bath unit as they typically have better longevity.

Either unit will give you the power you need for that application (about 87 PSI), honestly. If you're concerned about getting oil through the airline, then an oil-free unit is probably best. However, if you use this every day, then I'd recommend the oil-bath unit as they typically last longer than oil-free models. I hope this helps!

Out of all that you showed, the Dewalt/Emglo is the better choice. When these came out They had a lot of issues and aren't the best in a cold area. I like the Bigger Dewalt/Emglo's with the KU pumps have a few old twin tank models and a few of the single big tank models that are 25-30yrs old.

Those old Emglo wheelbarrow units can't be beat! They're probably the hardest working and most durable jobsite units out there, along with Rolair's units. Emglo was bought by Steam Jenny and now go by Jenny, Inc. DeWalt bought the Emglo name only and all units labeled Emglo that are black and yellow are NOT the quality of the original Emglo units. Thanks for the question! I would recommend an oil-free unit, as you won't have to worry about moisture getting into the lines. Two brands that come to mind are Thomas and California Air Tools. These compressors are more expensive than your "big box " store units, but are much more durable, and have quieter operation. Hopefully this helps.

Yes, Thomas and California Air Tools both make very high-quality, durable oil-free units, and are generally worth the higher price tag they demand. We didn't have either of these oil-free units available for the video, however. We're not necessarily comparing BRANDS, we're simply comparing the pros and cons, generally speaking, of both oil-bath and oil-free air compressors. Anywho, the CA Air Tools units are great and we sell their replacement parts. Most DeWalt units are made in China now, including these oil-bath units. The pumps themselves are based on the Italian "Fini" brand pumps that other brands (like Emglo, Senco and Rolair) used to use, but they're all being made in China now and the quality isn't what it used to be. There is a compressor for every type of application, certainly.

You can use the DeWalt compressor to blow out a sprinkler system as long as it produces enough CFM for the application. I'm not sure what the minimum CFM requirement is to blow out sprinkler systems, I'm, afraid, so you would need to confirm this prior to using it.

I just saw a guy rebuild a v-twin oil-less which he claims served him about 20 years, the key to oil-less pumps is that they rebuild rather cheaply and easily. Most do have air filters too. I'd like some estimate as to how many hours they hold up though.

Thank you for the comment Robert. Some oil-free units do repair quite cheaply, but it really depends on the manufacturer. Many manufacturers are making parts obsolete more frequently these days, as well. Oil-free units are great for those applications where you need convenience and lower air demand, as these units put out less CFM than oil-bath units. But, if you can't have any oil in the lines and if your'e working in tight spaces, oil-free units are great. As long as they are kept in a clean area, away from particulates, they can last a long time. How many hours is hard to say. How often would yours be used and for what type of tools? They do tend to be noisy unless you get one of the quieter, low rpm units.

I picked up a very dirty old one, dirt even between the reed valves, I can't imagine where this thing was used. Today I rinsed out the tank and it was unbelievable. I got the new piston and cylinder but needed to order a gasket which was leaking pressure below the head. I plan to use it for hvlp spraying, mini detail type, for practice, occasional use.

Thanks for the comment, Jason. There are certainly outliers. As long as an oil-free unit isn't ran constantly for long periods of time, it can certainly last you years. When run too long for a period of time, the piston rings tends to quickly wear out. Their duty cycle is less than an oil-bath unit's.

Food industry is one..also when you have to use water..also when you have to pain..you just can't have oil based compressors there...About quality i can only agree but as i said you have to start comparison with similar products..

You are correct, the reasons you list above like the food industry, painting and sandblasting are all applications where you don't want oil particulates in your line. You can certainly still use oil-bath units for these applications, you would simply have to install the requisite oil and particulate filters/traps to ensure no moisture gets through the line. Good reminders, though.

If you want a good one steer away from oil free. I guess they are fine for small or short jobs so if you need durability or long running jobs get an oiled one

You need to compare a 200 dollar makita oil free to a 200 dollar oil compressed. You’re stacking the deck by comparing a $100 Porter-Cable to a $200 DeWalt.

For spray painting purposes it's safest to use an oil-free air compressor as there is much less moisture produced. However, as long as you have the correct particulate and oil filters installed in your line, you can use an oil-bath air compressor (it will be more expensive, however). Thanks for the question!

Thanks for the valuable comment! The DeWalt unit is a solid oil-bath unit but it's still a middle-of-the-road compressor. The units are made in China now so they don't use the Italian Fini pump/motors that the old DeWalt (and Emglo) units once used. That being the case, these units are of comparable quality. The only difference in these units is that the PC unit has a smaller tank a bit less CFM output. That being said, this video was created to give a general explanation of the differences between oil-bath and oil-free units.
