Cost is pretty much why I'm going to go with hets. My dream ball python has always been an axanthic pied. But right now they average about $3000 on the market. Then I saw a gorgeous little axanthic female, and thought... I could get a pair of snakes and create hets. Then hold back a few. Maybe sell one or 2, or trade one for another het, and breed one or more of the holdbacks to that new snake, and hopefully hatch at least 1 visual axanthic pied baby. That would be a nice project. And I think all the time and effort and cost over the years would be worth it, rather than dumping a huge sum on 1 snake.

I agree with waiting until the price comes down but you can also buy a 66% het Sunset and save yourself alot of money and still have better odds of it proving out than with a 50% het. As long as you get one with other genes in it then it won't be wasted if it doesn't prove out and you can use it for its other genes. Brian Kusko says he can tell a het Sunset from some visual traits. I was hoping he'd tell people how on one of his videos. He said it was hard to describe. I still hope he'll let us in on his secret at some point. It would be a tremendous help to regular people who aren't rich so that we can start out with something really nice without having to take out a friggin loan to do it, LOL!

the best way to get a good amount of visually recessive hatchlings for the common recessives such as pied would be to purchase a visual pied male and 3 het pied females for the same cost as 1 visual pied female. Then breed the 1 male to all 3 hets. In theory the out come of those 3 clutches should work out at 50% of each clutch will be visual pied and the other 50% of each clutch will be 100% het for pied in this sense you can increase your visual recessive production by 50%. For example if each female lays a clutch of 8 healthy eggs equating to a total of 24 eggs in theory 12 of those 24 will be visual pied as apposed to 1 visual female and 1 visual male producing a total average of 8 eggs all visual pied. With this method you can produce your own female visual pieds which can be paired with a visual male to produce a full clutch of visual pieds with time the only down side is that you would be spending more on general up keep and maintenance as you would have 3 mouths to feed rats to rather than just the 1.

This is a good plan but if you consider the time it takes you to grow your visual females (3 years) and breed to get a full visual clutch. It’ll be around 3.5 years. I say get the money to buy 1.3 visual pieds right from the start.

David Merriman every keeper has a few 80 dollar snakes some where’s. Think about it like this would you rather have a box of crayons of one color or an assortment of color variations?

Hey Chris, I think hets are a really great investment. Case and point the orange dream pied is about $1,800(male) and a orange dream het pied is about $750(male) For me, when I consider that I can plug in that orange dream het pied male to about 3 or 4 of my female pieds and produce some orange dream pieds male and females, I rather save those $1,000. I understand that this paring will produce about 50%hets also, but its a really cheap way to get those newer genes into the recessive projects.

Hi, I have a question about this : if I plan to have a visual x het, would you better get the visual on the male or the female or does it have no concideration at all? I know that the % of babies are the same but if you have several males and females, it is better to have visual on female and het on male or the opposite please? I am trying to make my choice for my first project and thinking about how it could mix with another project. Thank you
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures5 жыл бұрын
I would get the visual male. One male can breed several females, it would be better to spread out the visual vs. the het.
@burninfate4065 жыл бұрын
I would probably purchase the visual female that way if you get a visual or het male you can breed it back to the mom in a year. If you have the male and only that pair of snakes in your project you would have to wait three years to breed back to one you have to grow unless you are going to buy more,

Hey just subscribed. Dumb question What exactly does visual mean? People are telling me i need a visual pied male to breed to my pied female to get more pieds. ... I tried google but nothing comes up to explain visuals. Does it just mean you can see the traits ? Like if i bought a het pied , it would be a nornal looking snake, not a "visual"? Im so lost 😕
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures4 жыл бұрын
That's right, one copy of the gene is het, not a visual. Two copies is a visual, looks like a pied. Thanks for the sub!

I just got a couple hets like you said it wasn't even a gene I'm really interested In but one of my other Gene's I bought was a het so I just threw a normal het on top just to have the female but I will get the extra gene on top

I disagree. I think with pieds and clowns the best way to do it is to buy 3 hets grow them on for a year then buy a male visual and the hold back some females and a male

Thank you sir. I'm a newbie so I have questions. Breeders seem to think it's boring but theres new subscribers everyday and we cant always find those ooooooooolllllddd videos. So thanks you gotta sub outta me. I love the banana pied so I bought 2 pied female and 1 banana spider male. Had to learn that I'll get het pieds then I gotta breed back. Love spied also. Cant afford a banana pied so I gotta crawl before I walk.

I recently purchased 2 female specters gonna put one in to my VPI axanthic coral glow project and the other in my VPI axanthic lemonblast project. Ultimate goal is to get super specter VPI axanthic coral glow and a super specter VPI axanthic lemonblast and then produce a super specter VPI axanthic coral glow lemonblast. Might try to add Mojave later on but still thinking on that one 😂

The hets are your call but from my experience, I can tell you to spend the few extra dollars and get a Pastel Mocha, instead of a plain Mocha. I have one and when paired with a Mojave, she can make BELs _and_ Pastaves (along with any of the individual genes, of course). When dealing with co-dom genes, I find it's often good to spend a little more to get two or more genes. More bang for your buck. Plus, the Mocha Pastel is a nice looking snake in its own right. The sire I'm hoping to breed with her next is my Nuclear (Butter Fire) het Clown, to get some Fireflies, BELs, etc. I'd love it if she produces a BEL with Fire in it, so I can try for a Super Fire BEL. The combination actually makes a white snake with a two-color (blue ring around a black center) eye. That's a long shot, though. Good luck!

I have a 100 percent het clown and she is really picky eater....but she eats just really picky... almost seems if I feed her at night she won't eat but I'll reheat Earl in morning and put in front of her hide she eats ...but she doesn't strke and wrap it it's wierd
@TheCharleseye5 жыл бұрын
If you're worried about it, try this: Skip feeding her for a week. Don't even offer her food. The next week, thaw an undersized rodent right next to the vents on her tub/enclosure. Then try feeding her. The combination of thinking food is getting scarce, meals getting smaller and smelling a meal without being able to find it for an hour or two has triggered a much stronger feeding response, in my experiences. After that, it's like someone flipped a switch. My worst girl (when I got her), now hits so hard that she tears rats right out of the tongs (and I mean she'll actually rip the body from the tail or cause a gouge in the skin, depending on how I'm holding them). I hope this helps.

Hey got a question I had mealworm Beatles they had grain mites in them now can they hurt snakes? I just threw mine out cause I wasn't sure didn't want to chance it ....that can be a video for you though
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures5 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of grain mites.
@dvlexotics21775 жыл бұрын
No grain mites are not harmful to snakes they are not considered a parasite more like a fruitfly. But i would still get rid of them.

I have question about the spider gene and "head wobble", is the gene the cause of the head wobble?
@TheCharleseye5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the head wobble is linked to the spider gene. What's worse is, there isn't a known way to breed it out. You can breed a Spider BP that shows no sign of head wobble and they can produce babies with any degree of wobble. I don't pass any moral judgements on those who work with the gene but I won't take it on, myself. If I remember correctly, it also occurs in Champagne and Hidden Gene Woma.
