Good roll-up. Sad to hear about the Linux Foundation exams, I was actually looking at that for work. I have the LPI Linux Essentials which was very easy to pass. One thought about LPIC-3. I was under the impression reading their website that you only have to pass 1 of the 4 exams offered in a specialization, not all of them.

Ahh, that could be. It’s one I really didn’t get too deep into because it was going to be difficult to create training prep. That would certainly be more affordable! Thank you, Joe.

Yup! Only one test. I’m LPIC2 certified but I’m not going for that last piece. Yo me it’s not worth it, although after passing my LPICs I became very pro LPIC 🙂 but I’m now going the RHEL route.

@@spaghettibit, I can see that. Especially if employers recognize RHEL certifications more than the LPIC ones. Seems to be more "bang for the buck" with RHEL.

+1 here for the LPIC path. I've done up to LPIC 2, and work in a mixed linux env, rhel/centos, amazon linux and solaris. It will give you the tools you need in a production evn and will peak your interest in other areas of linux. If anyone is thinking about it and if I was doing it again, LPIC1 and then do a cloud cert, then go do LPIC2 and learn Ansible

LPI Linux Essentials is an awesome introductory certification, the preparation guide book I used has about 900 pages and if you study thoroughly you will get a good understanding of Linux foundation principles and even bash scripting. LPiC-1 picks up right where LPI Linux Essentials leaves and goes in-depth with configuring most system aspects. Again count on studying ~900 pages of concentrated material. What I also like about studying Linux is that you gain understanding about multiple crucial side topics: DNS, DHCP, routing, encryption, regular expressions, bash scripting, boot process, filesystems, IS security, FTP, ssh, databases, web servers, troubleshooting and performance tuning. I am currently finishig preparation for the LPIC-1 exam. Would be interesting if you could cover some of LPI DevOps engineer certification prep.

Thank you, Shawn, I think either Linux+ or LPIC-1 would be very beneficial--mostly due to their distribution-agnostic nature. I'm currently viewing your 'Linux Essentials' series, mostly because I've been an on-again/off-again Linux hobbyist, and now I've found I'm going to be supporting something at work that another co-worker developed (a kind of hack to check our clients for properly formatted SPF), so I need to know a little more than I do now. :) Thanks again for doing what you do!

I gave the LFCS exam today…..Unfortunately my experience was exactly same as you. Never expected such a bad experience for an expensive examination.. I also could not finish the exam because of the PSI secure browser loading and multiple check ins….Even after multiple check ins different proctors are getting connected and asking for repeating the checkins in the middle of exam. The exam was not that tough, but I got disconnected after some time because of all of this issues..The worst part is I did not even get a proper response from the PSI TECH SUPPORT team or from the LFCS SUPPORT team.

Hey Shawn just though Id let you know I just took the Linux essentials cert and passed with a 710! Your videos definitely helped out. One thing I will say is, in some videos they begin with certain folders/documents already created, which made it kind of hard for someone who is a linux idiot (Me lol) to follow along in my own VM. Other than that, this series was amazing. You can really see your passion for linux which translates into how well you teach it. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this!

When I took and passed the CompTIA Linux+ exams eight years ago, I earned three certifications for the price of one: CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI, LPIC-1, and SUSE CLA (Certified Linux Administrator). Unfortunately, my LPIC-1 certification expired, so I will have to take the exams again. I started my journey into the Linux world by earning the LPI Linux Essentials certification; it is a great certification to get you started in Linux. For the CompTIA PenTest+ exam, knowing Linux is a must. I'm looking forward to earn the LPIC-1, LPIC-2, and LPIC-3 certifications respectively as a personal learning goal. Those certifications are not in high demand here in Puerto Rico.

Thank you for reviewing LPIC 2 and 3. You can’t even find any books on those higher level certs, especially LPI 3. Your Red Hat review was sorely needed too. Thanks. Exam testimonials are also needed more from people who actually take the exams even if they fail them which could be more valuable to those pursuing an exam.

Excellent video reflecting good overview of the certifications. Enjoyed watching and listening it and surely Shawn knows how to get the message across. I am gonna just make few comments and I hope people do not take this wrong way. Firstly, I am focused on Linux System Administration (not Linux Network Engineer, or DevOps) and my observation suggests pretty much most of the Linux Sysadmin jobs are rooted into Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Hence I am focused on their first certification which is RHCSA Exam 200. In this video Shawn asked the audiences what sort of videos he can make to help people like us who want to land into Sysadmin job? I would kindly make request to Shawn to make a video focusing Red Hat Enterprise Linux Exam 200 please. There should not be any issues because Red Hat has developer program where people can freely download and install RHEL. I am focused on Red Hat Version 8 (Ootpa). Also I have installed CentOs and when I issue command like " cat /etc/centos-release" the output is always Red Hat 8.9 per se. So yes, in my opinion Shawn can utilize CentOS instead of Red Hat because its exactly the same. If Shawn can care enough to make good few hours of video focusing Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) Exam 200, I think it would be THE BEST. Why I said that? Because judging by his communication and presentation skills, I must admit he is A1 instructor indeed. Best Wishes for Year 2024! 😃

Shawn, I just passed the Linux Essentials exam. The material I used to study were: 1.) Your video series here on KZbin. 2.) The course from A Cloud Guru. 3.) Jason Dion's book. I worked completely through all of these. I probably could have just used your video series and only one of the other two. But I feel well primed to begin a course for either LPIC-1 or Linux + I wanted to say thank you for your video series. Your presentation style is great! I enjoyed it very much. You clearly put a lot of time into creating the series. If you paid that much attention towards a free video series for an entry level cert, I can only imagine how good your next course will be. If I'm asked which certification I'll pursue next between Linux + and LPIC-1, my answer will be, 'Whichever one Swawn Powers makes a training course for'.. I'm looking forward to it and am eager to sign up and pay as soon as you announce it. Thank you Sir!

If you're looking for a job, which is the only real reason to get certified, an RHCSA will instantly put your resume ahead of the rest. Since CentOS is dead use either Rocky linux or AlmaLinux for learning. They're the new CentOS. Ubuntu Server seems to be on the rise, but I'd still go for RHCSA, because that's what companies want. Just my two cents though, do whatever you think is best.

Which cert do you recommend for someone working in a data center but with zero knowledge of Linux? I have CCNA and A+. From Virginia
@shawnp0wers
@shawnp0wers Жыл бұрын
Welcome! I'd recommend going through my Linux Essentials playlist here (it's free) -- it's a pretty good introduction that doesn't assume any Linux knowledge. If that makes sense, probably moving on to Linux+ or LPIC-1 would be the ideal certificate path.

Is the current version of Linux+ set to expire since it came out in 2019

Wow, I can't believe it's been that long ago! I'm not sure how long before it expires. The new revisions don't usually change too much though, just a few updates here and there.

Hi, Shawn, I work with RHEL in my current role as Sr. Desktop Support Tech. I'm the only Linux admin on my Desktop Support team that deals with all the RH Workstations. I'm considering a career path as a AWS Cloud Engineer, should just go ahead and pursue the RCHSA since I already work it or get the LPIC exam? Would the RH exam befit the cloud?
@SaveTheHero210

I’m curious to know what you chose, but I would say that the RHCSA would be the most beneficial in your case.
@eman0828

@@SaveTheHero210 HI there. Yes I did look into it but RHEL is not that common in the cloud. It's mostly used in larger enterprise environments or Defense Contractors. Ubuntu seems to be the most widely used in the Cloud. So I decided not to persuse RHCSA. I would only pursue RHCSA if my goal is to specialize in Red Hat product's typically in a Linux Sysadmin or Linux Engineer role. For Cloud And DevOps I would go ith LPIC-1 or the Linux foundation one.

hi, I have a question about LPIC-1, what is the difference between 101-400 , 102-400; and 101-500; 102-500, can you explain please??
@shawnp0wers
@shawnp0wers Жыл бұрын
Without going to the website and looking up the tests themselves, I'm assuming they are revisions. Usually when they expire one set of tests and replace them with an updated version, there's a short period where both are available. I suspect that's what happening here if you have the option to take either set. (And ideally, you take the test you prepared for, so if you studied the 400 material, you'll want to take the 400 tests, and vice versa)

I'm actually taking the Linux Fundamental with edureka and also about to take the python scripting cert. are those good or are they better ones as a beginner and that can land me a job

If I had to recommend a language for people to start with, it would be Python for sure. I learned BASH scripting (I have a series here on that), and then my first deep dive into a language was PHP. I wrote some fairly large PHP programs for the company I worked at, but if I would have learned Python instead, the programs would have been more flexible and efficient. Python is really a great language to use for everyday solution-making.

Is Linux Fundamental Cert a good certificate? wondering which cert to take and if its a good cert
@shawnp0wers
@shawnp0wers 2 жыл бұрын
It's tough for me to find a cert with that exact title -- I do see the Linux Foundation has an "associate" level cert that I didn't know about. That might be their entry level certification that compares to LPI's "Linux Essentials". I assume it is a great cert to prepare for, especially if you're not already familiar with Linux. Even if you don't pay for the cert itself, learning the objectives would be a great start. But the cert could validate your learning, if nothing else so you know that you "got it" while you were studying, if that makes sense. I do talk a bit about entry level certs (particularly the Linux Essentials cert) in the intro video to my Linux Essentials series/playlist. If you haven't seen that, check it out.

Is Comptia Linux + same level as LPIC -1 in terms of knowledge?
@shawnp0wers

Similar. It's worth looking over the objectives to each. They have a slightly different "take" on which things they go deeper into, but I'd rank them at the same competency level.

I have not. I did a prep course for it years ago (not here, but for the training company I was working for) -- and the amount of content was pretty similar to Linux+ & LPIC-1, but of course very specifically about RedHat.

Unfortunately, I'm not current on which books are good for specific exam prep. That said, I'm very biased toward my friend Kyle's books on Linux in general. This one for example I recently used to set up my own mail server (and that's only one chapter in the book!) amzn.to/3EP82H4 (note: affiliate link)
