Please note we received a letter from a Mr. N. Birkitt of Bracknell advising us that the suspension is not adaptive like 'DCC' on the Golf, it's simply a switch between two fixed modes, Normal and Sport. This is different to the DCC system on Golf and Scirocco which has switchable modes but is also constantly variable based upon road conditions. This is possibly a first for a VW for it to not be adaptive when there are various modes (as opposed to just a Sport button) hence the confusion, apologies, it's still very good.

volkswizard considering your name, wondering if you might know. Now that the polo basically has a detuned golf engine, do you think it’ll share it’s characteristics? I’ve read a lot about the head needing de-coking after as few as 30000 miles?! Normal people can’t afford that

TFSI carbon fouling all stopped when they went to dual injection with TSI engines. They installed extra injectors in the inlet ports which is where they used to be before direct injection came it. This washes the area and prevents carbon build up. All Mk7 onwards, last gen Polo GTI and definitely this one will be thus equipped (with 8 injectors, 2 per cylinder)

Ed 35 is old TFSI so that is prone. Mk6 TSI I don't think has dual injectors so is vulnerable. If driven properly and good fuel used I don't think it's too much of an issue TBH. My opinion is that it's been hyped by people with a vested interest - I'm not saying it doesn't happen as I've scraped the crap out of a TFSI engine before but only once and that car had a lazy thermostat that meant it didn't warm up and ran rich which caused fouling. Cost £10 (two cans of carb cleaner) to sort and a lot of time and rubber gloves!

I do recommend the Polo GTI. We have one in family since April 2018. The car is still a pleasure to drive. It is comfortable, well mannered and quick enough. I can't find any reason to have more power on today's roads. Only in Germany you might need a more powerful car for active driving and long distances. We also have a new Golf that looks dull but in all other perspectives is a great car. I have had 28 new cars in our family. Among these are German, French, Italian and Japanese cars. We have returned back to German products as they are after all these cars the mostly excellent ones. I honour especially my Audi Coupe 1989, Audi Avant 1986, Merc 350CDI 2010, Mazda Miatas of 1989 and 1994, Alfa 159 2.4 JTDM of 2006, Volvo V70 2.5T 2004, BMW M3 1990 and Golf GTI 1979. All Japanese and French cars were dull as hell and not nice to drive. Even the Subaru Turbo 4Wd was ugly and full of plastic. It consumed huge amounts.

@Juuso: Great comment. I hope you can offer me some advice. From your experience, do you think a Polo GTI would be able to travel at ~150-160 km/h? I will be driving through Germany and Belgium for work, and there considering an used Polo GTI (2016-2020). Thanks in advance for any help you can offer 👍

@@Hermetic_ Sure you can and with ease. I have lived in Germany for many years. I then drove a M-B 350 D. It was great for fast driving with 620NM torque. If you buy a Polo then buy the latest model of 2018 and onwards. It is clearly more silent and spacious than the earlier models and the engine is a 2 liter one, basicly the same as in Golf GTI but as you know with lower HP. It is one of the best four cylinder engines ever made and so easy and inexpensive to tune. Raise the power a bit to 220-30 hp and you will be happy on Autobahns without causing engine failures.

There are a lot of distractions in cars these days, I wonder if there will come a point when legislation will require some features to be disabled whilst the engine is running. The clutch cable on my MK3 Polo snapped once when leaving Curborough sprint track.

Having seen this review, I’m glad I ordered the up! GTI. I’d get more enjoyment out of a manual and I’d rather have the car set up for me at the factory instead of having to go through all the options myself. And above all, I never want an exhaust that farts on upshift!

I had the previous model on a cheapo 2 year lease as a station car and thought it a cracking little thing. It wasn't the best handling, it wasn't the fastest and it wasn't without flaws....but it was £163 a month and did everything well enough, was nicely built and quick enough to hoon around in.

I'm in South Africa we only getting it launched here end on July 2018. But I have pre ordered mine with all options. I currently have the 2014 twin charger polo Gti in reflex silver, but The new one I'm gonna be getting I've opted for good old boring white. Just a note on the the older twin charger polo Gtis, stay away from them! I got mine brand new and believe me I can't wait to get rid of it. Anybody reading this stay away from that 1.4L twin charger engine, it will bring you nothing but tears. From new to about 45000km its great, then the shit starts hitting the fan. It's DSG will develop a clutch shudder between 1st and 2nd and the ones that were manufactured in vw Spain factory and exported are prone to timing chain issues. Note the model I have is the revised version, so apparently the "quirks" from the earlier 2010-2013 were supposedly iron out. So while it does not suffer from the the inferior piston issues and excess oil usage like the previous version, it's far from perfect. Lol anyway, to bad for anyone out there that bought the 2015 1.8L polo Gti......you should have just waited for the 2018 model. Both the 1.4L and the 1.8L models were way over priced and contained to much base model finishes to warrant the price tag and the 1.8L performance was only minutely better than 1.4L. I made a mistake buying that 1.4L.....should have rather kept my mk5 golf Gti a little bit longer. I was a idiot lol

Hi David, yep for sure it would beat Mk3 16v, all Mk4 (although GTI 180 would be close) and run a Mk5 close I'd imagine. Wish I still had Mk3 GTI Anniversary 16v 3 door VIW 6166 (sold on a different reg BTW), be nice to add to the collection :)

Forget the Fiesta ST. It is no match to Polo. It has a hard suspension, it is noisy and starts annoying very soon. Ford has a tiny 3 cyl 1.5 liter starting engine. Fiesta ST suits teens whose fathers buy them the car. It is not for adults.

5 doors IMO is perfect. Nothing worse than having to move your chair forward for people to clamber in the back in a 3 door. I also think VW are one of the few manufacturers that make 5 doors look as good if not better than the 3 door version (in the Golf for example) Some 5 doors don’t work aesthetically though like the 5 door Mini hatch 🤮 hideous looking after thought. Great review though 👍🏼

HI VW....I didn't quite catch what litre engine is in this puppy lol....My favourite Polo to this day has to be the MK5 Polo: 9N3 GTI, basically a mini Golf GTI, with the added bonus of the 1.8T engine, the beefy MK5 grill on the front at first glance would fool people into thinking it was a golf. Not sure what BHP but somewhere between 150bhp/180bhp which could easily have 210bhp slapped on it for good measure. Downside, was only a 5-gear ratio. Was never really keen on the later Polo's as they were mainly 1.4/1.2's etc....no real grunt behind them....Great vid again by the way, with a now renewed interest in the Polo:)....

Hi B&S, 200 PS 2.0 TSI with 7 speed DSG. Mk5 Polo GTI was 150 bhp, decent mappable engine but chassis was dire, this is the first one that really goes around corners thanks to development work by Karsten Schebsdat, the man behind Mk5 Golf GTI, 911 GT3 and GT2 and the lovely Golf GTI Clubsport S :)

I have the updated 2022 Polo GTI version down in Oz and it works out a lot cheaper than a Golf GTI new/demo, +AUD$20k cheaper. If it came to money and the enjoyment experience, it's the winner if you simply apply the Smiles:Dollar ratio for selecting a new VW. On the other hand, the TRocR is only +AUD$12k more here than a Polo GTI, and whilst the driving dynamics may not be as playful it's certainly way more straight-line performance. Golf R over here is near +AUD$25k more than a Polo GTI, and whilst it would be an excellent car to drive it is entering luxury car prices....

waiting for collecting mine next month! Here in italy i think it's mandatory take variable suspensions, with these roads in ruins. Btw i think it's the best choice for a daily sport car, expecially for cost/performance ratio

Everyone goes on about UK roads being bad but you are right they are often worse in Italy and you don't have the cold weather we do which ruins our roads by freezing and thawing the tarmac! Hope you enjoy yours and totally agree on its suitability for a daily sports car, it's a great package :)

Andrew. Mrs M already has a Polo 1.8 GTi DSG very high spec bought from Orangewheels Discounter via Inchcape Swindon. 2 1/2 years with 31000 miles . Never missed a beat ,she is a heavy footed quick manic but good driver. She loves it.

"So an update on the Missus's New Polo GTi DSG. 3 weeks from handover and 1600 miles . On Monday we did a round trip to Ashbourne Derbyshire, comprising M5,M42 with A &B roads before and after motorways. 348miles, average speed 49 mph returning 50.5 mpg. Very smooth and comfortable drive with power and brisk performance now the engine and gearbox has eased and bedded-in. Yep a step up from her 1.8 DSG " The above was my comment on Briskoda. Car currently has 2300 miles ,commuting currently to Cornwall - Bodmin. She and me really liking the car very much.

This one is so much better in so many areas that it has to be go for this one. The older one is good and there will be some great deals but finally the Polo GTI steps out from the shadow of the Golf GTI with this generation.

Thanks Nicolas! Maybe the fact it's built in South Africa makes a difference as the old one wasn't? In the UK it's not massively more expensive than the old one but there are now a lot more options available which means you can get close to £30,000 if you aren't careful! For some though this is worth it as the Polo exudes a premium feel now that it never has done before ;)

This new 2.0 is slower than my 1.8. Runs out of puff way before low redline whereas my one has a kick at 4500rpm and goes until 6800.

Ultimately I need to demonstrate the car's abilities or viewers will comments that it's been driven like an old lady's Polo 1.0 :)

Nope..... it’s way more expensive than the UP GTI..... plus the polo has never been special since the demise of the polo G40..... plus I think the Up GTI will become a classic for VW just like the Lupo GTI was.....

Hi Richard, thanks for commenting. Price is a big issue, so much so comparison is pointless. On the other hand if the up! GTI doesn't provide what you want then the Polo probably will for less than a Golf GTI and in a smaller package. The Polo is too mainstream to be 'special' but in this generation it is finally a good all rounder and well worthy of its GTI badge. As for up! GTI being a classic, you could well be right, it's done to the city car market what the Mk1 GTI did to hatchbacks back in the 70s (just have to wait 40 years!).

If I'd turned the TC off with my laptop and it had a better set of tyres it would have been OK. It's probably even more hobbled by the silly TC on that little circuit than a bigger one where you can keep it smooth & neat. It's got so much torque that it's hard not to brake traction with means TC muscles in. It's so nice to drive on the road, I'll forgive it :)

No 3 door is a reason enough for me to never get it

Hey Got memes? I like 3 doors but boy are they hard to sell them as here in the UK everyone prefers a 5 door. I guess it means you get a good deal on a 3 door when they do come up but not with the Polo. Oh well, buy an up! GTI instead (3 door of course!)

Nah. Can't stand a 3 door that's the same shape as a 5. Fair play if it looks different like an old 3 series coupe compared to the saloon , but last model Polo just looked the same.

Mmmm I love they are 5 door, try getting your ageing mother out the back of a 3 door? Or putting children or shopping in the back, I love the 208 gti, in fact I had one 206bhp great fun but only 3 door, mean I missed out on taking my parents out, (mothers,Father’s Day) I swapped it recently for a golf gtd 17 plate, bit boring but this polo looks just the ticket. (Bit more economy than golf gti) ? I do about 30,000 miles a year!

Sorry I watched the video at work with no sound, now I have watched it I know it is. Sorry. The VW configerator doesn't seem to reference to the plus at all, even though the brochure does. Might be worth waiting until July to see if new options get introduced like the bose system. Why July though, what happens in July ?

The Up! Mii Citigo product line is superb and it will be interesting to see how they update it as it must be due soon. Let's hope they resist the urge to over complicate and charge more for it as that is part of its charm.

Great video and nice car! It’s just a shame that now you have to get the Plus model to get equipment that was standard on the previous GTi! They said it’s to make it more affordable but in reality the car is more expensive but with less equipment 👎

Restating a comment from several months ago: if you get a Polo GTI or a non GTI Golf and add as options all those things which come as standard in a Golf GTI, you are very nearly getting that Golf GTI engine free. Having just changed a 66 plate for a Golf GTI Performance, I am surprised what has been added as standard. Of course you may not want these items but any comparisons are problematic. The Golf GTI, in all guises is very well spec’d. Sorry about your divorce (to the person who replied to me).

Just wondered if you suffered oxygen deprivation during this video, I only ask because the salesman didn't seem to take a breath and there's only a limited amount of oxygen inside the car, did you feel light headed at all as he spoke to you at 200 mph+ ????

My Up Gti, is a breath of fresh air compared to the technology in this Polo and Golf Gti. The thing i most like about the Up, is its simplicity, and lack of features, features that only add considerably to the price of the car. The Polo is a bit pointless, because your better off buying the Golf, even though it costs a lot more. The Up Gti is a back to basics fun car, and does not need any of the technology available in the Polo or Golf And heaven forbid, this Polo is nearly £11k more expensive than the Up, so its a bit pointless comparing both cars.

I liked the up GTI for quite a while, but it’s overpriced, you’re paying for the GTI badge in the price tag, the polo GTI is a nice meet in the middle and the golf is if you have plenty of cash kicking about

Got rid of my ‘15 plate Polo GTi four months ago, jumping into an S3. A different grade car but I had toyed with staying with a Polo until I saw the new design...it’s dreadful. It looks like a Golf GTi that has melted slightly. Limited configuration options to make it your own and limited performance. Feel VW is losing a grip on the hot-hatch market.

I'd have said configuration on this model was a massive step forward for VW. Loads of options to choose from, black roof available with some colours, you can even change the colour of the dashboard! But S3 is a great car. As for VW losing grip on hot-hatch market, they now have 3 GTI, the 2 new boys are causing quite a stir judging by my viewing figures and the delivery lead times. The Golf R is established as a class leader, the Mk7.5 GTI especially Performance is hard to fault. I'd say they are currently at their peak when it comes to hot hatches!

Golf GTI is better without the performance package. But I heard that there possibly is only the package model. It is noisy and only slightly faster.

@@jdc0907 For multiple reasons. Firstly the extra power is not making any difference in normal use. Acceleration is roughly the same with basic GTI. Top speed is also the same and you have no use for it outside of Germany. Thirdly the performance version is noisier. It is nerve braking on longer trips and totally useless. Finally basic car is better, more comfortable, will last longer and will cost less.

£25K car. It is nearly as good as a Golf GTI and nearly as expensive..... but it is still not a Golf. It is also nearly as heavy.

David Hayes DSG polo is £22,500 base, DSG Golf is £30,000. Quite a big difference and the lease is about £50 cheaper (this would be about two weeks petrol paid for) on the polo a month so if you're divorced or single these things matter and even £8k can make a difference to someone's monthly cashflow.
