Cracking little cars, I had a 13 plate Sport for quite a long time and it was an absolute hoot to drive, and if I was sensible I used to get 42-45mpg commuting to work. The only thing I would say about them is parts can be a bit hard to find and expensive since they don't seem to be supported very well in the aftermarket (apart from performance parts). Also my insurance was very expensive for the performance, no doubt reflecting cost of repairs. Unless it's already been fixed the gearchange is pretty loose and imprecise from the factory, due to the loose rubber mountings that hold the remote mechanism to the floor, the whole thing moves around when you change gear. Aftermarket bushes available. CTC in Yeovil is a specialist for these little pocket rockets, they will sort you out with engine tuning, suspension and brakes etc.

I've had one of this generation Swift Sport on a 57 plate for 5 years. I've taken it from 40k miles to 140k miles in that time! People always say that the gearboxes and clutches are weak on these - I say nonsense, mine is still on the original clutch and box at 140k miles and I rag it everywhere! Not had a single issue with transmission. These were homologated by Suzuki for S1600 ra so unlikely to have poor gearboxes. There are weak areas however. Yours is fairly typical with the seat bolster issue. The material Suzuki used was poor quality - when mine was at only 40k the bolsters on both seats were already worn through and had torn. Springs - I've had loads of front springs - maybe I'm just unlucky but N/S/F now on 3rd spring! Exhausts - Back box weld failed on mine at 50k miles, whole thing was rotten. None of the usual motor factors had a replacement. Had to resort to a Suzuki dealer - 6 week lead time and £800 for the twin outlet backbox - had to be ordered in from Japan. I said no to that offer, and bought a stainless steel system made by Piper for £600 instead - best thing I ever did - fantastic sound and fitted really well. Quality product, and immediate availability. Spares availability in general is quite patchy for some items. Got to look around sometimes. Check engine light issue - There's a bug in the ECU where it throws a CEL at the slightest provocation - P0420 - where data from sensors not interpreted correctly. This was fixed on mk2. I just clear the code before MOT and it's OK for a few weeks until it does it again. Doesn't affect power or driveability etc. In my view brakes don't need upgrading, apart from decent pads for trackdays. The car is so light - 1040kg only. Apart from the Piper exhaust, I run a Pipercross panel filter and it's putting out 140 BHP at flywheel. Standard door speakers are rubbish. Lots and lots of interior rattles and squeaks, even from new. They came as standard! Keyless works well for a 1st gen system. Chain driven - no cambelt to worry about. M16A Engines are absolutely bombproof. Totally over-engineered. Definite future classic - the 205 GTI of the 2030's! Not sure how Suzuki managed to make any money on these - here are most of the engineering changes for the Swift Sport of this generation compared to the boggo 1.5 Swift :- Chassis strengthening with additional cross members Stiffer Monroe gas dampers Stiffer and lowered springs Bigger wheel bearings Revised suspension mountings and bushings Revised steering rack mountings Revised steering rack ratio and assistance Bigger front brakes Rear disc brakes Revised gear ratios, closer on 3rd 4th and 5th Different final drive Revised gear linkage, shorter throw Uprated clutch Uprated headlamp units and bulbs Different tail light units Electronic Stability Control derived for this model External cosmetic mods - spoilers, different bumpers front and rear, bigger alloys & tyres etc Internal cosmetic mods - seats, leather wheel, trim, stainless steel pedals etc

My son's got one....great fun...driver's seat doesn't wear well but the closest thing you can buy to a mk1 golf in feeling to drive. Brake pipes at the rear are prone to corrosion and springs are weak...engines are revvy and bullet proof. Induction kit makes them sound great and frees up the breathing compared to the Suzuki system.
@thomasfrancis57473 жыл бұрын
Springs, brake pipes and discs not unusual. If you're into selling Swifts maybe also consider the original SX4 (also Fiat Sedici = effectively same car) which basically a jacked up Swift with 4wd option and should sell well in your rural area. EML/cat issue could be faulty exhaust sensor behind the cat - common fault at 50k miles - £30 to replace from Green Spark Plug co.

Not a bad little car. I had a 2009 with reasonably high miles on it, and while it burned oil, it went pretty well. Watch for 02 sensors failing, and the cat converter failing. When the air con stops working, it gets bloody expensive very fast. Springs, shocks, and an uprated rear sway bar will give you a car with a nice little turn in. The rear bar helps dial out the understeer on a front drive car, and represents to me, one of the best improvements you can make on a front drive car for track use. Wouldn't bother chasing power to be honest, you won't get much for your money. While the suspension work will transform the car on track. Chuck a set of good pads in it too, that way you can stand on the brakes all day, and it won't let you down.

Seat adjusters aren't usually difficult to fix. Fiestas also suffer from sticky / broken seat adjusters or worn lever pivots etc. Often it is the ball bearings and springs that lock the runners that are the issue.

Suzuki Swift Sport is a great chuckable car. Only problems are seized rear calipers, rusty brake lines, corroded fuel filler line, and the odd gearbox problem but they are solid cars. Quite expensive to modify so stick to putting good brakes and tyres on and enjoying it for what it is. The hole in the seat happens to them all and is just wear and tear from getting in/out.

I'd buy another tomorrow but it would need too be mint, low mileage and full service history.

@@ChopsGarage There's quite a few people on here saying they've had gearbox issues with their ZC31S Swift Sport. I get the gearbox oil changed every 3 years on mine as per the manual, (though you can go longer if using the genuine Suzuki gearbox oil). Never had any issues, now at 140k miles, no bearing noise etc. I wonder how many of these people get to 100k miles or 10 years, still with the original gearbox oil, and wonder why the bearings are getting noisy! These are very robust cars if maintained properly. Gearbox oil every 3 years and engine oil every 9k with good quality synthetic. Also the engine performs best on 98RON or better. (I use Tesco Momentum). There was one Swift Sport at the Nurburgring for hire that did 270k miles around there, and only needed one wheel bearing, one clutch, and an exhaust in that time.

They are great cars - I've got one! Fun round the lanes, though not as sporty as you might expect. You have to really thrash them to get lot of performance. Gear ratios are rather too low IMHO - once you are rolling, you rarely need to go below 3rd! There is a gearbox oddity that Synchro is a bit suspect on 2nd - its not a failure, 'they all do it'! Fantastic reliability. A minor annoyance is that the tyres are a slightly unusual size, and so a bit more expensive than you'd hope. Still, I got around 20k miles out of the original tyres, which is amazing for me!

Also, I'm not too familiar with 'problems', but when looking I never saw a particularly high mileage one. I'm not sure why they 'go', but I never saw one over 140,000 miles. There are a few KZbin channels who have tried these, so maybe check a for of their videos with regards to modifications and potential problems. My unwarranted guess is that they just gradually suffer with general wear and as these get cheaper they get neglected and people shift it on. I wouldn't worry too much, it's Japanese!

They used to have Suzuki Swift super 1600s in WRC and JWRC, have a Google, should be plenty parts available for them, Demon Tweeks possibly. Definitely fit a roll cage, it adds to the structural rigidity of the car, the stiffer the shell the better it'll handle. Bin the drivers seat and runners for a race/rally seat and harness, these have an fia expiry date, an out of date seat would be ideal for a track car, ideally the seat bars should be welded in but you can buy universal one's from Tweeks 👍 Definitely do a build series of videos as you go on with it 😎

We did have the same spring go but other than tyres 👍 flew through, and that seat cut is the seatbelt I’d say as ours chaffed at the top fancy seat covers sorted that. Bypassed the 2nd generation. Loved it so much brought the very first 18 plate before the traders got there demonstrators never mind in the showrooms, yes the champion yellow. Again brilliant car. Everything we expected, only a couple of gripes one that stands out notchy gearbox but that’s being picky, treat them right they’ll look after you. First mot no problem. I’m not sure about it being a long track day car but around tight twisty track 100% boy will you be smiling? if not you’ve managed to put it on its roof.

I'm very jealous, James. I looked at these a long time ago as a nice, sporty hatchback for a 'young-ish' driver! Genuinely great cars, bar a little cheap feeling. Those seats ALWAYS show wear in that place and they are expensive to replace as everyone is looking for ones in a better condition. Nonetheless, a good little buy. When I was interested in a Swift Sport, these were around £2000-£2500 with over 100,000 miles, privately. You can tell it was owned by a 'boy-racer' with the 4D plates, stereo removed and none of the advisories cleared on the MOT history. Unfortunately I would say you over paid a little for that, I sold one privately for £1200 with full MOT same age with just a little more mileage. I currently have a 2008 one which is great. I would suggest joining the uk sport group on Facebook in which plenty of parts are for sale and CTS down your way who sell mods are also on the group. Absolutely love my sport but the key things to go are rear callipers seize which Requires rebuilding, gearboxes can fail but plenty around for cheap. Front wishbones also a know fail point and are cheap for parts. For MODs remapping is not worth the option, these cars are strong in cornering to concentrate on tyres (worth changing for 205/55/17 when you need to replace), suspension like coil overs work great and strut braces. The car will wipe anything out on the track just in handling which is the strong points. Also worth noting super unleaded is recommended by Suzuki for this car even though I have used e10 ok. Other weak point if not been serviced with oil changes regular is bottom end bearings fail and this is most likely the biggest issue. Could be worth replacing them if history is a little weak. Otherwise these cars love to be redlined and just thrown around. Welcome to Dm me if you want more help, also got a shelf full of parts if needed. A haha

Bloody expensive, bought mine for £900 and sold it for £1450 and it was a 2008 plate. Great cars.

But when, what miles, what condition, and you have sold it for £450 more than I bought mine for so age adjust about 1k is bang on by your own example

Should have or should’ve, not of. Sorry, but it’s a bugbear of mine. But £1,300 doesn’t sound that cheap for a 15 year old motor that is getting occasional use.

Well a 15yr RS Focus will set you back £50,000 for all relative

@ Well no , a Suzuki Swift Sport is a completely different proposition to a 15yr old 150k base model Micra which would be a £300 car. The age is not the decided value is my point there are many other factors

@@ChopsGarage I understand that. If it's not really stock and just for you, that's fair enough. But there's not enough margin in it, otherwise. I still can't believe a seat indicated as dangerous doesn't fail an MOT. Surely it cold have been failed on two points as dangerous (insecure and seat moving) and major on its structure and the adjustment not operating as intended.
