I know an electrician who also got a real estate license and he basically buys homes with electrical issue for dirt cheap and then fix it and sell it. I work for the railroad and have for 5 years now. What this guy is doing and not entirely uncommon. With most railroads having a seniority based system for what routes you can hold and where the routes run out of a surprisingly large amount of people live out of campers, RVs, and conversion vans. They will go to one place work a few weeks until they get bumped out jump in the van and go to another location and work there until they get bumped out and the cycle continues. One of the people I worked with lived out of an RV for 5 years before he had the seniority to hold a spot consistently and then he bought a house paid cash and sold the RV for a commuter car. The pay benefits and retirement make the sacrifice worth it if you plan to do railroading long term. $100k a year is about the average salary for someone with 15+ years who works consistently and doesn't call in sick etc often. Good for him I hope it all works out in the end like it has for so many.

I lived in a car for 3 years and bought a house with cash. The time went quite fast and I think he should stick at it. Maybe do 4 years to save up a bit extra on top of paying the montage off. Because it easily swings the other way lots of people are so poor they live in a car because they have nowhere. So I say he should carry on and then vist his wife and kids in between. And walk with God. He sounds like a really decent guy.

he's already a rich man, but the version of rich that's defined by most societies, I personally do not think he is. having a disabled person to care for requires a lot of time and tons of money, pending the condition or if the condition worsens over time and his health insurance and what it entails he will be living like most people. A million $ is good if your healthy. (in addition) If he eventually has a million stashed away, I wonder if he can pack up burn his guns and move to Canada or Europe where health care far cheaper then here.

Didn't live in a van down by the river, but people made fun of me for living in a tiny studio apt that cost half the rate of a nicer place. It was a short-term strategy to save a lot of cash.

In the 1990's I hired on to drive semi trucks with J.B. Hunt. After passing the driving school J.B. Hunt and his brother in law, Sam Walton took us drivers to Denny's for dinner. Mr. Walton told us to invest all our pay into his company called Walmart and just live out of our trucks. Few recognized the name Walmart back then. Those that did invest are doing very well now. Some even retired a bit early. They were very kind and humble. Great teachers if you listened to them. They didn't speak very loud, just at conversation level.

What no one is talking about is: what does his wife want? Is she and her family ok with him gone so long? If not, he should be home...Years away from home is not good...short term sure, but not years and years...

Chris Boulas whose comment was a liberal comment? If you meant me, I am as conservative as they come. My comment was based on my 3 kids having a Dad who works 70-80 hrs/wk. This video doesn't show the wife's side at all.
