Live session of Noel's "Creative Fundamentals" class.
5/30/2024
Guest, Professor Davy Mooney talks about his influences and how he developed the fundamentals and how he developed his style. I asked him on behalf of the class, "Should I learn jazz?"
What do you think? Why or why not?

I love Davy, he has a great series on youtube where he breaks down standards that is a wealth of knowledge.

I really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing. Amazing playing as always and I learned some good stuff- but Noel’s dad jokes were killin. “You too can play with e’s” and “You could say they are not just surviving, they are thriving” - that was pure gold 🤣🤣🤣

I love that Eb with the open d and open g. I got that one from Gene Bertoncini. He used it in a ton of his chord melodies.

Bebop language sounds a bit dated. But jazz is the best way for me to learn to hear and play over modulations on the spot. And that you can use in any music style.

If you think bebop sounds dated, you should hear Bach 🙃

Pat Metheny said "You have to have a strong sense of the bebop language to play any kind of jazz". I agree with that, bebop is the foundation that this music is based on, yes the music has taken turns and shifts, and also the bebop sound is very dated. But the sound is not the only thing worth looking into, its the melodic development, the timing, the phrasing and also the dexterity that playing that music gives you. Yes bebop is dated (I mean its almost 80 year old music), but Bird, Diz, Bud Powell, Monk, Mingus, etc. are still better improvisers than 90% of musicians living right now.

@@pedroberoes49it’s not because it sounds a bit dated to me that I don’t like listening to bebop. If you listen to Julian lage’s tributary for instance it hasn’t that much bebop language in it. And it doesn’t sound dated to me.
