@@franciscofernandez8183When using a 2014 subclass with a 2024 character there can be issues because all 2024 classes gain the subclass at level 3 where some 2014 classes gained the subclass at level 1 or 2. What is being explained is that the new rules state that when using an old subclass with the new classes in the 2024 book you don't gain any subclass features until you gain your subclass in the 2024 book (level 3). When this happens you gain all your subclass features for all levels up to your current class level. For example: You are using an older cleric subclass such as the Tempest Domain. With the old PHB you would have subclass features at levels 1&2. You now gain those features at level 3 when all classes gain their subclass. Any future subclass features are gained when you gain your next subclass feature in the 2024 class. When you gain the subclass features in the 2024 class you gain all subclass features for up to the level in that class.

He’s saying that if you play the 2014 Forge Domain Cleric in a 2024 game, you use the 2024 base Cleric class and then adjust the levels at which your subclass features come online. For the Cleric, their level 1 and 2 features would be gained at level 3 since that is the level at which all subclasses now get their first features and at levels 1 and 2, you instead get the features of the base 2024 Cleric.

For the forge domain question of when you get subclass features, jeremy answered this on the dungeon dudes and said any features that aren't reworked will be gained when they reach a level where they gain a subclass feauture and that level is higher than the level needed to gain those features in the previous edition. For example, the level 1 and 2 forge domain's features will be gained at level 3 as that is when the 2024 cleric gains a subclass feature.

He simply does not have the wiggle room to say anything negative and I can’t blame him for that. I love to study the history of D&D. One of the things you will notice if you look at the history of the game system is that there is a new edition, or revision, of the D&D rules on average of 7.5 years. OG D&D was around 2.5 years. 1st lasted 11. 2nd was 10, then 3 / 3.5 went for 7 years. 4e was only 5 years, and then 5e lasted for 10 years. I know that people are calling this a cash grab, but the reality is that 5e is just at the end of the average TTRPG lifecycle, and that a revision or new edition brings in new fans, new profits, fresh ideas, and a fresh approach to the game.

And at 10 years its MORE than warranted, as the landscape has drastically changed. From dnd becoming more popular every year, to baldurs gate 3 demolishing records and being better mechanically than the ttrpg its based on. I haven't seen the beta, so I can only hope that they've taken some changes bg3 made into the new rules. As well as Larian's changes to certain classes, subclasses, or subclass features, how the game handled verticality/jumping, how liberal the game was with special/magical items in only the first few levels and how they balanced that, etc. But the rules update is needed for sure. I especially like their approach apparently with races/backgrounds/species now.

And there are *a lot* of revisions in there. One a lot of people forget is 2nd edition. About six years (give or take) before 3rd they reprinted the core books with minor updates and all new artwork. They then released three "Player's Option" books that overhauled the character creation, combat and magic systems. The advantage was that the rules were fairly modular and easy to ignore parts your group didn't like. The downside was that if your group did use all the rules, players had to buy four books (because the PHB still had information you needed).

My guess is it’s a staggered release to generate consistent sales revenue over financial quarters. It makes their stock look better at shareholder meetings. Publishing isn’t difficult for large companies with access liquid revenue like Hasbro does. They don’t do it “in house” they contract out the printing to companies. If they need more than a printing house can produce they have the financial power to contract to multiple printing sources. Also the materials for printing aren’t prone to scarcity like computer tech is.

Great video Ginny! Pack Tactics covered the backwards compatibility their last video too! Subclasses from 2014 (like the cleric) don't get their subclass until level 3 like everyone else in 2024. However, at level three they will receive all their subclass abilities from level 1 to 3, at level 3.

11:31 In an Interview with Pack Tactics, Jeremy clarified that the classes that used to get their subclasses before level 3 have their new 3rd level feature that marks the gaining of the subclass worded in a particular way. Basically it says you gain all the 3rd level features of that subclass or lower. So when you take the Forge domain at level 3, you'd get all its 1st and 2nd level features.

As someone who works in print and spent five years working prepress at a book manufacturer, I can pretty confidently say that the staggred release is most probably due to logistics of printing and binding a release on the scale of new edition requires. They most likely have a limited number of vendors that they contract with and it tap out their capacity to print and assemble millions each of each book all out once. I can also say with casebound books, even if the produced with large web offset presses, books with page count of over 100 pages take up a decent amount of warehouse space when you have to stage the sigs together to go into the bindrey equipment. Again, the scale of the volume of books they have to produce for an initial release like these takes a good amount of coordination of the capacity at their disposal to do right.

They can’t risk creating a 6e because the huge boom of customers they gained the last ten years don’t know that this is part of the RPG tradition. And since Hasbro/Wotc hates (and I mean they genuinely despises, no hyperbole necessary) their old customer base they are more willing to allow development of the brand to stagnate, commercialize, and digitize, rather than evolve into a new generation. I like how they did it where they made it backward compatible. You can thus use existing characters using the 2014 rules and import them into 2024 rules game, or re-create the 2014 character to updated 2024 rules, with GM guidance as I don't see a GM saying 'nope sorry you cannot convert' to which most players would say 'sorry I won't be playing in your game'. Ultimately, most people would simply want a reasonable conversion. I would like to see a Conversion Guide done on helping GMs and players do such conversions, sort of like if you had a 2nd edition ADnD character and wanted to re-create it in 3e ADnD or 5e 2014 edition. You might have Cloak of Displacement but you'll use the 2014 5e version if you go with the 5e conversion. So if an item or option is updated, you'll use the newer one if available.

I feel like a good way to explain the backwards compatibility (for some people) is to think of it like a code update. When the code update gets pushed, the things that are changed overwrite the old versions of those functions. But any functions that were not touched still work the same way they did before. Sometimes this causes friction with the functions that were changed, sometimes it doesn't.

Love your content, old school GM that has played/ran 5.0. One note, Modifying the play experience pretty must started back with the Ed 0. The white box rules were just not cutting it, so the Greyhawk supplement was created to address issues of game play. This also was the start of modern DnD that has influenced every version after in some way. ADnD, 2.5, 3.5 and 5.0 all now have been modified from key starting rules. 5.X is not so new or different. The trend started in 2.5 when books were released to allow modifying species and classes to craft a more individual experience. 3.0 lifted rules from 2.5 to make up its core rules. Not much new under the sun.

I appreciate the disclaimer and the neutral stance you're taking on the subject for sure. "We aren't losing anything" is the part I take issue with. We absolutely ARE losing something. Take the Ranger for instance. They neuter the class by removing a lot of its flavor and basing almost the entirety of its identity around a single spell. While it's undeniably a little STRONGER mechanically, it doesn't seem like it's as fun to play imho. Sure, I can still TECHNICALLY use an old Ranger. But you go back and notice that you ALSO reach the conclusion that if you're using a 2014 class version, you're probably going to be at a disadvantage. But if I'm going to be at a disadvantage for doing this, then how is that NOT losing something? Now I'm not a powerplaying type, I don't build my character to be strong. I want them to have a unique identity and build them around their personality and style. But at the same time, I can't just neglect character power either, or else I'm not really going to get a chance to actually do much when combat rolls around. So a change like this feels like the worst of both worlds for me. Maybe I'll change my mind later when the spells come out (since Rangers are clearly being pushed to emphasize their spellcasting a bit more in 2024), but for now, I'm really just not interested.

Imagine if they did an edition change today the same way they did in the past: they put out a handbook, and then you have to wait for all the additional books to come out, and all the homebrewers to brew before you get as much variety as in 5e. That worked in the past because they didn't have much, or sometimes any, real competition. But today? If they'd have done that I would have just kept playing 5e or switched to Pathfinder. Others might have switched to one of the many other competitors. It would have heavily fragmented their playerbase. I think they made a smart business decision to walk the more difficult design path. It might have been an existential decision. Good interview, Ginny!

From what they've said elsewhere, the staggered book release is due to the printer not being able to produce all three books at the same time, in the quantities they need. They're putting all the effort into printing & shipping the PHB, then they'll switch to the DMG, and then the MM. Once the initial deluge of shipping is done, the printer can handle second printings of everything to keep stores stocked.

Hope this gets a lot of views! A new version of D&D was such a terrible idea for everyone but the people at wizards that they didn't even go for a new edition.

As a person that has been playing since the tail end of 2nd edition; much of this makes sense. Of course, I need to move my party over to this revision and since this is going to be the first time I had a party during a revision as I was mostly acting as a player during 3.0-3.5. It shouldn't be a huge problem as I think I'll start them in my Learning Adventure which I just need to translate from 3.5 to 5.5.

@@simonfernandes6809 Aaww buddy, that's okay, I'm sure other people struggled to make it through third grade as well. (In all seriousness, PF2 is not really more complex than DND 5th, you're probably just used to one system and so the specific differences just make it appear complex)
@tuomasronnberg5244
@tuomasronnberg5244 Ай бұрын
You have to admit that PF2e has more moving parts than 5e. Three actions, all classes able to put status effects on allies and enemies, of which many last just for one turn so you have to mark constantly which have timed out this turn and which are still ongoing etc. It's probably fine on VTT that keeps track of everything for you, but I wouldn't want to run a pen and paper version of it.
@jazzy4830
@jazzy4830 Ай бұрын
@@tuomasronnberg5244 Three actions of the same type (not having to deal with move equivalent actions, standard, full round etc.), and as long as you can get your players to take responsibility for the conditions which they create it's pretty easy to track. I don't use VTTs so I can't speak to that, but I find it very manageable once you have relearnt the system that differs more at a core level from 3.5 and 5th. I think to figure it out it's important to actually start from lvl 1, and because you get your tools drip-fed as you level it all becomes much more easily digested and learnt. I would recommend first trying one of the pre-made adventure paths if you're new since it takes a lot of pressure off the DM to have everything figured out immediately.

There is a really big and important distinction between the passionate designers of the rulebooks and the goals of the company behind them. The video did not take away my concerns, even though you tried your best! He didn't elaborate on what it takes to convert other options into your D&D 6 game, third party content wasn't even mentioned, you could have... But mostly, and very importantly, the sameyness of the classes and races and the digital direction the company is taking weren't addressed. As an example Ginny, you're probably aware but I recommend watching professor DM's latest video on the digital direction of Hasbro, it will at least make sense of why they release the books in these intervals and will probably also make sense of a lot of the choices made.

Fun fact: I have actually read the DMG cover to cover before. I used to do it all the time with 2E, but haven't done it as much with 5e yet. Often I'm looking for specific content, but doing it in such a way that I'm making sure that I'm not missing anything that could possibly relate to what I'm looking for, so I just end up reading all of it.

With 4th edition there was a way to convert from 3rd edition, same with 2nd to 3rd. It was more involved than the current changes, but it isn't completely new. It does allow them to keep making money off the old stuff, but the flip side is that you don't scrap everything that you liked from the past as a player. The problem that nobody thinks about is if the new stuff doesn't win everyone over then not everyone switches over and later down the people are split until eventually when they make a new version many don't like that it doesn't fit well with 2nd edition elements they like and don't update at all so the company cuts backroom deals and strong arms who it can into upgrading and then demands that everyone is up to date all the time without question with automated spyware to verify that you are being a good customer for them, and so they can sell that access to your life to different agencies and companies around the world.

I find the "cash grab" argument infuriating. Do people think WOTC should have fired all of their game designers in 2014? Should game designers be expected to accept life as an impoverished gig worker because thats more "ethical"? Why is it evil for them to continue to work for WOTC and produce new content after the initial product is finished? D&D has very limited profit margins. All they have to sell is books. It's ok for them to want to publish new books so they stay in business and their employees continue to have jobs. Comparing that to Bethesda's horse armor or Fortnite skins is downright cruel.

Honestly, I think about this a LOT. People are angry at them for laying people off, but then are angry at them for doing things with the intention of making money (you know... like businesses do). I don't know if I just have a different perspective on this as a business owner myself, but sometimes it seems like people will only call a company ethical if they're functionally a nonprofit. I hope it's clear that I am not calling these books a "cash grab." I was simply acknowledging the sentiments I'd seen online around the books.

Dude! I didn't think of it this way... In my forever search for perfect "rules lite, with just the right amount of crunch" system I didn't give much thought to the business of game design. It's easy to forget that even though it's MY hobby, there are others that depend on me buying books, to put food on their table. While I hate the current KZbin ads for 5.1 (Jeremy saying "Hey players! We just powercrept all your PCs, bug your GM to buy our book!"), I shouldn't fault WOTC for just trying to keep the doors open. That's how so many good IPs get abandoned.

Incorrect Ginny Di 5e would NOT be 'Obsolete' if in fact it was 6e. You don't stop being able to play 5e with all that was made or you have access to. You can still do that with a newly 'dead' game, ie a game that won't be supported with new material by WOTC, but guess what, third party OGL people might support it with 5e compatible products. Mind blowing stuff, and did you know it is possible play ADnD 1e. That game has been 'dead' for decades, but it can arise from the dead if you resurrect it to run it at your table and find players to play it. That is the real magic of gaming. The power of 'dead game' resurrection for those games once deemed obsolete.
