Today I'm reacting to an interesting live performance - Metallica & Miley Cyrus TOGETHER. A collaboration I never thought I'd see or even want to hear. A clash of the pop and rock titans you could say. Miley seems to be forging her way into the rock scene, so let's see how she fairs next to the most commercially successful rock band of our time Metallica and the legend that is James Hetfield. What do you think about Miley's switch into this genre - does she garner your respect or do you just see her as another mainstream pop star? Tell me.

Miley Cyrus is a seriously professional artist. She isn’t just riding Metallica’s coattails here. She is bringing something impressive to this collaboration. She doesn’t just dip a toe into other genres, she does the work and seems to understand what those genres are all about. Celebrate the idea of expanding your horizons. Thanks as always Justin.

No. No it is not. Debbie Harry can sing. Miley's voice is courtesy of Auto-Tune and Disney magic. She sucks! I would put up Blondie and Joan Jett on their worst days up to Miley's best days! Even now that Debbie and Joan being in their 60's, still have a better voice than Miley. Joan and Debbie forgot more about singing than Miley will ever (never) know.

The thing you gotta remember about a lot of rock fans is we're losers lmao. We grow up feeling like outcasts etc. So we kind of just have this disdain for anything popular that the "normal kids" like. As I became an adult it became so obvious to me that I hated so much music for literally no reason other than it was what people liked at the time. Miley Cyrus is the perfect example of this. Her father was a famous musician who grew up in the 70s and 80s, you don't think he played rock music around her growing up? She clearly has a genuine love for bands like Metallica, Zeppelin, etc. But because she was Hannah Montana and the girl who twerked at some awards show a certain type of rock fan who never grew up will still hate on her for no reason. She is a decent singer and is a fan of this music. Enough said. There's no reason for anyone to be embarrassed because they played with her.

Hi Justin, loving the show, new watcher, first time commenter. Love the analysis, firm but opinionated! Not passive aggressive sarcasm I promise, rather genuine appreciation for the playful opinion, delivered in a comedic style. Comments sections can be the twitter of life, leading to tribalism. However, we are in the fledgling era of our internet. It's childhood if you will. We're drawn to things that please us, and dubious/ afraid of that which challenges our comfort. We need guidance and love to see us through to the next phase intact. Playful banter such as that you deliver, is already helping us back to being able to discuss our differences in a non-cynical discourse, which allows the most important organ to re-engage during social intercourse, our ears, and the pathways to reason and mutual understanding within us. I have new found insight of your own musical prowess and intuition through these clips, and respect the grounding of your comments. Whilst I don't agree with every utterance, we are basically on the same page in that all music has a place but rock well... ROCKS! Only minor off putting aspect to these videos is the constant bombarding from the "still struggling to master the Guitar" brigade advertisements, and their pyramid "I'll make you a competent player in weeks" schemes (which I have to admit play to the insecurities of plinky plonker never had the discipline to practice properly "guitarist" like myself). With their "listen till the end of my video of half an hour-40mins (or whatever the algorithm for you tube requires for them to make money) before I'll reveal the secret to effortless rock godship, along with the cost". The actual secret being (spoiler alert!) find something you like then learn it. Hey Ho I'll keep plonking and live vicariously through my many children. Much love

As someone who's liked Miley Cyrus since I worked in a movie theatre and happened to spend an evening waiting for my ride home to show up by watching the hannah montana movie and subsequently finding Miley's amazing singing voice through The Climb and then checking out her early albums before ignoring her "R&B" phase entirely. I'm pretty happy she's returned to her country and rock roots and hope she continues to do so. Her early biography book (Miles to Go) before she did all that rap stuff was also a particularly inspiring read for a young impressionable youth. As a fan of metallica it's great to see the duet. It reminds me of Babymetal and Rob Zombie's defense of them when people tried to say they weren't metal; good music is good music.

I don't like modern pop at all generally, but the more I see her the more I respect her. I think the answer to JH's question asking why it matters what Miley Cyrus' childhood was, is the fact that child stardom gives the artist a leg-up on other artists. It can (but doesn't always) become about popularity, not talent. I guess we can look at Taylor Momsen and Miley Cyrus as examples of how musical talent can still permeate regardless of the popularity of childhood acting. Still, though, there are many artists that aren't able to breakaway from their child acting roots when trying to become rock stars. Corey Feldman, Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Scarlett Johansson, Alyssa Milano, etc, etc.

I generally agree with Justin's positivity. However, in this case, I disagree entirely. Although I find Miley's pop sensibilities to be as magnetic as some of the other posters, I find her take on this song to be histrionic. Is it better than the original? No. Does it breathe new life into an old ballad? Again, I'd say no. What I'd like to see is her actually tackle some new, unheard of material of the same vein and see how that fares. This, however, reminds me of a pizza with sushi added. Utterly unnecessary and detracting from the purity, simplicity and goodness of the original;)

I think she's a wonderful singer, and I've heard her do some EXCELLENT job covering rock songs. Check out her cover of Bob Dylan's incredible "you're gonna make me lonesome when you're gone". Her voice is simply INCREDIBLE. So, now that it's time for my opinion of this particular cover, you'll (hopefully) know that I'm being purely objective. I feel as though she's trying to sound like Hetfield in this, as opposed to simply singing the song her own beautiful, sometimes soaring vibrato-ey voice. Maybe that's because she's in the stage with him? But typically when she covers other styles of music (listen to her videos for "Jolene" by Dolly Parton, and "You're gonna make me lonesome when you're gone", by Bob Dylan), she adopts them into her own sound, while still showing sufficient reverence to the source material. She does naturally have a very deep speaking voice. She's talked about this in interviews quite a lot. In her episode with Joe Rogan, she explains that her voice just developed that way but that it ISN'T her normal singing voice, which is why when she meets people in person they're always so shocked to hear her voice. So there's precedent for me to say she's trying to sound like James instead of simply singing which, being a cover, is fine. But, I only find it fine. I just don't think this particular cover is excellent and I really think she can sing far better than this. Again, listen to her sing Bob Dylan and then listen to this. In my opinion, this is actually a bit cringy by comparison.

I wish it wasn't "Nothing Else Matters", but some really hard number of theirs. Would have worked awesome. They did "Moth into Flame" with Lady Gaga and it was really cool.

She has such a wicked voice that suits this music, she should definitely do a rock album, and as you are ace at the guitar would you ever do an acoustic album?

This is reminiscent of when Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas did 'Beautiful Dangerous' with Slash. Few people would expect it to work, but it absolutely does!

Like an old record player (Grammy-ophone) with the speaker bit (the Horn). \m/ I'm with you Sir Hawkins, in the Miley-High Five Club. Gagatellica - Moth Into Flame was rockin' too, and Miley Idol - Rebel Yell is respectfully decent also IMO. I think a game show where Pop Stars (cough) are given someone's song to perform live and are then critiqued by a panel of experts who decide.... are they the Real Deal or Posers, called The Fraudition is also an excellent idea. Lastly, mighty edition of JHRA today which I enjoyed immensely. Fanks heaps. Xxx

Billy Corgan has talked about working with Miley. Kind of surprised it hasn't happened yet.

Shout out to Peter Green’s guitar. I thought that was Nick Jonas. Because that solo sounds like a drummer played it. This crossover is fine. Have you seen Rick Ashley with the Foo Fighters? That’s hilarious.

I'm trying to figure out if that rip is part of the shirt design, or if he's just wearing a torn shirt... Loving the specs....reminds me of those clip on sunglasses they had in the 70s... Miley is fantastic in this (and when she did Rebel Yell with Billy Idol)...
