100% believe in first come, first serve. I've chased some knives for 6-7 months before I was able to get what I wanted. Some I've been chasing for years and still haven't got one. If the "user guy" beats me on a drop for a knife then good for him. I'll try again on the next drop. I collect knives, some of them I use and some of them I don't. It's my choice what I do with them, so I don't care what other people do with theirs.

I'm that "user" guy. I feel exactly the same. We all work for what we want. When we can find it, we buy it. I just missed yet another Hinderer drop while I was working. It wasn't the first, won't be the last. Ill keep trying.

You hit the nail on the head man, if someone beats me on a drop then good for them. It took me well over a year to get the XM18 I wanted, and another 6-7 months to get the textured TI scale for it. That's part of what makes this hobby fun, sometimes you win and you get to buy the knife you wanted and sometimes you lose and the knife you want is sold out by the time you load the page. If you're spending the money for the knife then its up to you what you do with it, whether you use it or put it in a case to collect it.

Great video and agree 100%. I carry knives that range from $200-$1000. They all get used but not abused. In fact I’ll say I baby them and keep cheap beaters around for when I don’t want to dirty up my good knife. But that doesn’t entitle me to anything other than a credit card bill when I buy stuff I don’t need. You want to beat on your stuff? Go for it. But that doesn’t mean I don’t get to buy the same stuff.

Isn't it weird that we can buy a knife that costs a grand, but then we get a knife that costs under 100 and the 100 dollar knife sits in the safe. For me, it's a boker dessert warrior. Meanwhile my fancy sebenza, fancy medford get a lot of pocket time. OEM made Chaves get the most pocket time for me though. Waited 5 years for a microtech stitch and got an all blacked out. Had it now for months and still can't put it in my pocket yet. Did the same with my higher end heretics. The most expensive heretic has had a ton of use/multiple sharpening.

I absolutely believe that collectors contaminate every thing. I'm fine with collecting. I'm a collector myself but it's really hard to get your hands on almost anything because collectors are involved. I'm a handyman/woodworker and it's super hard to get a hold of a quality used tool because Cracker Barrel hangs old/used hand planes on the wall of the million stores they have. Does that fuck things up for the rest of us... Yes it does!

There are programs to counter people that use bots. This is a thing in the sneaker community too. Sites like Nike and Adidas use programs to filter out and cancel bot purchases. That would be great if some of the knife sites did the same thing. As a connoisseur of both it’s a daily struggle. In the end it’s really the people who control the websites, that have the ability to add these programs but it seems like as long as inventory is sold out it doesn’t matter to them.

I was a "User" for decades, carrying a Buck 110/112 and not giving any more thought to these tools than I do to my hammers or drivers. Then I discovered Spyderco and became a "User/Enthusiast" hybrid, branching out to many other makers. The inevitable Act III took about a year before I became a "User/Enthusiast/Spyderco Collector." I will say that I don't own a single knife that doesn't get used. My collector-level Spyderco knives get light use, of course, with a RAT Model 1 always ready in another pocket.

I know an old timer who has been collecting knives of all kinds during his lifetime and they are all on display but are all visibly used and and have a patina from years of use. He would buy a knife and use it until he felt it had lived its life as a well used tool and essentially retired them to their displays to live on. Cheers!

For me it doesn’t bother me one way or the other! If you can by expensive knife and that’s what you like than go for it! For me none of the knives i by are over 120 bucks, most I use, a few are nice and I don’t want to damage them. To me there are so many knives on the market if I can’t find the one I want then I just look for a alternative with the features I like in a knife.

I know for knife companies this must be a nice problem to have lol. I think you're seeing the market kinda respond to this by having a "regular" version and "premium" version of a knife. Hopefully to capture both market s. But I do wonder when companies like Spyderco do sprint runs and they only make a few, does thst create resentment and harm the reputation long term? I know a few ppl that won't buy another Spyderco for example until they release more slyz bowies.

I get that you can feel disappointed if you wanted a specific knife for work, etc... That being said, is there any work that absolutely demands that exact knife? There's always knives that are about the same, right? Regardless of price. So, in the end, it comes down to you wanting that specific knife. Because you like it 🙂

It should be even shot for everybody. Different financial positions make for different priced users. Neither party is more special than the other. I personally carry my arius as a user more than most of my other knives. But I’ve also moved up to higher end knives over time. But neither collector or used is more entitled imo. I’ve got $20 knives and $1000 knives. Most get used. Some that are much harder to get get carried, fidgeted with and still used. Just not nearly as hard as say a crk zaan or my xm’s. I don’t mind spending good money on a user. It’s no different than buying Snap-on over Stanley tools. You pay for the quality bump.

I would shove myself in that user category 100% With that said though I can appreciate the collecters eye as well. Some knives that are put out and made are beautiful works of art. Some in appearance, some in function, and some in both regards. As someone who stays in the $60 and lower category. You bet they see quite a bit of use and in some cases also take a bit of abuse. Eventually I'll pull the trigger and buy something of both beauty and quality. It will be heavily admired and of course gently used haha.

"collectors" are just scalpers by another name. Places like BladeHQ and KnifeCenter (and all retail stores tbh) should limit the number of knives that can be purchased by one person or sent to the same address. **First and foremost*** As someone who likes sneakers too, I generally abhor the botting because it's an unfair advantage that isn't available to everyone. If you buy multiples of a product on spec, using traditional means (non-bot/cook group), that's fine bc its a calculated risk that there's a market to create a return on investment and maybe they see a trend before others. There's actually laws against it for concert tickets that are enforced by the SEC. The BOTS Act. I believe that such laws should be enforced across the board. Brands that know botting is occurring and do nothing to hinder it (there are ways to prevent it and software designed specifically for that); they should be boycotted and publicly called out for such behavior. ************ Now then, "USE" vs "Collector" In general, a knife that's typically made for functionality and real edc use, AKA "a tool", is likely going to be easier to get. In all honesty, unless you're using shredded hundred dollar bills soaked in Louis XIII cognac as your fire starter; how many people are honestly using a midgards-messer, microtech ultratech, etc for batoning wood on a camping trip, or cutting heavy 2in thick rope? Many of the collector-type knives are not ideal for edc "use" because of ergonomics, functionality, blade material, etc.

Is this really a conversation that comes up? Been doing my own car and home repairs for over a decade; by no means am I contactor, as I essentially earn a living behind a screen, but as any DIY type person you accumulate nice tools, high end impacts/ power tools, hand tools, etc. and being of similar price ranges to many of the nicer knives. Most useful tools universally for me have been ratcheting screw drivers w/ like 40+ bits, or socket wrench, of course a drill, or something specific like wire cutter/crimper, but seldomly a knife (unless your surviving in the woods or something I guess, but I dont think those are the knives being discussed). In fact, was doing basic stuff over the weekend, hanging/installing mirrors, shelves and cabinets in a salon and chose to use a cheap husky box cutter as much as possible instead of the the $200-$300 knife I had on me. This market is for the collector/enthusiast - one spyderco, one sebenza , one cold steel could suffice for near a life time, but does anyone stop with one? They probably would prefer you didn't stop with one. Some are clearly tools, or weapons, or showpieces or art but all are for sale. Who goes first? The one willing to cough up the cash and pull the trigger in the moment, and under the most extreme circumstances then the highest bidder, its called a free market, whether you put it under glass while wearing gloves, stash it in a tool belt or throw it in the ocean, every dollar is just as good as any other dollar. is it really a free market? thats a different channel

I don’t really have a dog in the user/collector fight. To each his own. It’s the individuals that are in the market solely for resale. These individuals don’t fall into either category. They are just middleman in this solely for profit.

I've waited up to five years to find a knife I'm looking for, sad when I miss a drop or have my money tied up when a drop happens. I'm not mad at anybody, but sometimes its frustrating. I do use all my knives. Some get far less pocket time, but a knife that costs a grand and is built to be used is going to be used by me.

That’s exactly what happened to me yesterday watching this channel, and I ain’t mad at it. Your epic ramble aside- it’s true. If you have a little extra coin and you’re a “user” you’re going to get a “nice user”. Then those multiply sometimes. I suppose I’m an enthusiast user!

Here's a point I use that stops "users" in their tracks: There are knives and even multitools that come with their own display case. What's its intended purpose now?? Is one guy gonna display it harder than another? 😂

Honestly, I think it depends on the intent of use. To use a work of art is to simply admire it and discuss what it means and the elaborate processes used to create it. But to use a work horse...you basically placing the knife in non ideal situations continually until it meets it maker....or you do.

I think it's more the makers want rare products more then anything. As for me I'm a collector to use the tools. I see no point in buying something to not use it. I even do it with my limited edition highly collectable RC cars. Only way I won't use something is if it was designed as a show piece.

Damn MC - you really need to lecture on philosophy at a Uni or College!! Just spent the last 20 minutes nodding my head and saying 'Yep that's me' or 'Yeah I know guys like that'. Wasn't until the vid finished that I realised it was about knives. Reality is users & collectors need each other. Users create the volume of sales to make the market viable. Collectors push for the variation in the market. My mate collects guitars & has the same dilemma - play the guitar or preserve it? Sharp blades all.

I don't see why it should be that way. Why I buy a knife is my business. I am a collector also in the highend stuff. I miss knives all the time, you just have to be lucky sometimes. Hunting for a certain knife is just the fun of collecting and yes I do use my knives too

Great video MC, thoughtful and funny is always a great combo 😊. I do remember commenting on the topic of use a few months back when one commenter was hesitant to use a knife he’d spent a chunk of change on. My feeling was he should as it might increase his pleasure of ownership but of course there is no definite answer as MC pointed out. Similarly there is no strict definition of ‘user’. I am not in construction, law enforcement, the military, nor do I own a 100 acre spread so my use falls more in the category of breaking down cardboard and other stuff around the house. My Atom checks most of those boxes but when it comes to harder use I’ll turn to my Shaman or XM-18. For those of us who own more than one knife we’ll use the best knife for the job, whatever that may be. When it comes to my being prioritized over another when it comes to a limited drop that’s nuts! We all want what we want cuz let’s face it we probably like the look of the thing and then rationalize all sorts of reasons why it ‘makes sense’ to buy one or two or three whatever. In the end there are as many answers as there are users, enthusiasts and collectors.

People can do whatever they want with their money. That said, I decided long ago to never buy something I’m not going to use. After 30 years of collecting I still only have a dozen knifes, but all get carried and cut, even the top end $700+ knives.

The problem is more the 'collectors who purchase until the item sells out and then puts it up for sale at a' gouge' level price. Some models already self at an inflated price far beyond their value. I'm referring to production knives. Customs are a whole different thing.

As a collector and a user I believe that there shouldn't be any priority between the 2. Is a matter of what can we afford, if I can afford to abuse a tool that cost more than average then good, the people that can't afford some of these knives are the ones always complaining. I prefer that people like you and other reviewers get priority regardless because you guys are the ones that promote and show these products that are not shown anywhere else.

It happens in all categories of merchandise; cars, watches, shoes, handbags, etc.. I collect tools, you should see my display of sockets, all gleaming chrome, perfect stamping or laser etch. I need to pause, and calm myself... okay I am being a bit facetious, but there are different levels of performance even in tools and makes some more desirable than others for certain jobs, some hardly ever getting used. But, just knowing you have it if you ever really need it and can flip it to someone or hand them down should the spawn ever need them.

This isn't a pity party statement, but as a blind guy the lag time caused by my assistive technology tends to mean that by the time something drops, it is gone before my screen reader can even find it on the page. That is just the way life goes. I don't resent collectors snapping some up, and frankly a lot of the secondary market is powered by collectors making room in their collection for something else. I do get annoyed at people who snap up as many as they can to make a killing on the secondary, but that is the nature of a free market economy. If I really wanted to put my money where my mouth is I could own an AD20 which I covet, but I haven't made that commitment or enlisted the help of someone that can see to assist in the purchas. I have not wanted to risk buying from a private seller, but again that is a choice. Collectors, I wish you luck :)

I'm not concerned with people using a knife rather than looking at it. However my concern is resellers. I try to get in on a drop and can't cuz some asshole bought 10 or 15 and resell at markup.

MC, I think this might be the 1st time I have watched a video of yours and have agreed with you 100%.. I truly appreciate the knife community and appreciate the machine work these knife makers are doing. The materials being used and the technology is truly impressive. But let all be honest with ourselves for once. That shirogorov or Rockstead Knife does the same thing that Ontario Rat or Para 3 does. But they look and are cooler. I would say that am a watch person. I know this because I have bought a watch that tells time and spent way much more for then I needed. Especially when I could have spent 60 bucks for a G-Shock and k ow it keeps better time. We all need to relax and embrace that fact that a a certain point we are all enthusiasts.

I am user, enthusiast, and collector in that specific order! If I miss out on a knife that I have wanted or chased and its in limited number, it’s probably because I didnt have the budget for it! I will never blame someone for beating me to a knife, especially for the budget reason! I have a collection of around 60 knives, and there are dozens that I want that I still dont have and may never have!

the problem with buying into the idea that Users should get knives first is this: if you were to DO that, then you would be agreeing that they are more important than other people.....and they are NOT, PERIOD we're ALL in this together people....I would also suggest to you all that people who are "Collectors" and especially guys like the you-tubers, actually "USE" their knives MORE than any ordinary user. I would also say that there is a very simple way to stop this whole "Problem" in it's tracks, and that is to put a limit on how MANY knives are sold to any one entity...that way, the scalpers will be short-circuited to begin with .....OnWard....
