Thanks for this. I would let it sit because I heard this advice and felt I was better safe than sorry. Glad to know that’s an unnecessary step.

When I was heavy into my Aquarium and fish keeping days I always let my water sit. My municipal water used Chlorine and not Chloramine as a part of the water treatment process. My water is very hard sometimes I use tap water straight out of the faucet, sometimes I use water that’s been sitting for a short while and I live in a location that receives plenty rain and I sometimes mix tap and rain water. Last week I got just under 11” of rain from Monday to Saturday. I would say everything got watered very well 😉

You mentioned sundews, but any carnivorous plant is harmed by water over 50-100 ppm tds (depending on the genus), pings being a weird partial exception. It is generally recommended to use distilled/RO/rain water exclusively in areas that dont have extremely soft water.

I have some houseplants that are over 30 yrs old, that are practically trees. I use tap water and never fertilize, the only time they get fertilizer is when I repot them. Some are all roots and very little soil and they still thrive.

same so many root bound 'enormous' big plants i am too scared to repot - but they seem to be thriving - years later.

How do you know which plants don't do well with very hard water? Depending on the frequency of rain, my well water can be harder or softer. I find that when there has been very little rain, my filter gets used up MUCH faster.

I think the well draws from water nearer the surface first & gradually draws from lower as water is depleted. It's just a guess though.

Yes, Ive done this experiment years ago because I only drink distilled. They definitely didn't respond well. The best was rain, then stream water, then pond, then tap, and finally the worst was distilled. Maybe leaving water aerated with a bubbler of atmospheric air to get O2 and N2 in it?

It may interest you to know that the world health organization strongly recommends against drinking distilled water on a regular basis, for the same reason this video recommends against using it on plants.

I have great water where I live and I use reverse osmosis for my reef/fowlr tanks but I use tap water and fertilizer with my plants and orchids I see how much they like and how they are growing and I adjust from there

Not sure where to ask. I'm trying to determine if sourdough discard is a safe and effective fertilizer. I've heard yes but can't find any science.

After boiling potatoes, is that water good for in door plants
@ColoradoTodd

I feel like this whole tap water mythology comes from people trying to reason out why their yard (grass) seems to respond so well after a rainstorm, compared with tap water via sprinklers. Instead of asking why the rainwater is "better", they probably assumed that tap water was somehow detrimental. I've heard that rainwater contains a bit of dissolved nitrogen picked up on its journey and this results in the quick burst of grass growth after it rains.

No doubt! I apply various bacteria to my plants for use as pesticides and fungicides. The last thing I wanna do is water or spray them with chlorinated water! Happy gardening.

Well you do boil water to make distilled water, but you aren't going to get much if you aren't using a closed system with separate containers and a condenser 😂

Rainwater is nearly the same water as distilled water. Especially, the amount of minerals is in both cases close to zero. Why will plants die when you water them with distilled water but survive when they get rainwater?

Rain actually picks up nitrogen on the way down and with all the pollutants I imagine all sorts of crap
@jonathandrummond8313

Robert mentions that rainwater by itself is not nutritious enough to sustain a plant and on its own would require the addition of minerals/fertilizers. That said, I assume the reason Robert didn't afford distilled water the same allowance as rainwater in that regard is that distilled water requires much more energy, money and effort to produce and procure than rain, which is essentially free.
@cannafarmer
@cannafarmer 10 ай бұрын
@@jonathandrummond8313 obviously water only doesn't do it without nutes added to the water ro existing in the soil. But rain water does catch nitrogen on the way down that is why plants perk up after the rain. Happy growing ✌
