Question: why not have - as a record label - a share of the royalties instead of owning the masters? Am I missing something?

This has been a topic that has been weighing on me for a minute. As a super small indie label I can't afford to pay really anything so all of the tracking, production and mastering happens in my living room by me. A huge part of myself is invested in every album we do and so I really feel attached to these projects. I have only signed bands who know nothing outside their instruments. A big part of me wants to own the masters since I feel like the project wouldn't of happened without me. The main reason I haven't opted to try and own the masters is because of the optical hit it would cause to even try and own them. One thing I do to address the trapped concern is by putting a buy out clause in the contracts. If they want to revoke my licensing right to the music they can buy me out at any time for slightly more than the cost of creation.

dont sell yourself short, if you made the recording happen (produced, recorded in your studio without cost to the artist) you should own at least 50% of the master.

Bro please could you help me understand if its a standard practice for Major labels to own the artist youtube channel and spotify? For exemple, most Atlantic Records rappers when you go to their youtube channel it says "this is the official channel of the Atlantic records artist Kodak black". Like, they put their name first like they own it.

For my label I like temporary ownership or licensing of the music. I dont want to own the mastrrs forever. Too much admin and statements when sales are very minimal.

Rock stars who lived in the basement of their parents home only cared about playing music,doing drugs,girls. Music producers gave them everything they wanted. Music producers provided them with hotels, girls, alcohol and drugs.. They signed all their rights music,clothing just to acquire the party scene.. Everybody screams how they got ripped off when in fact the producers gave them exactly what they wanted.Musicians signed everything away without reading or hiring lawyers... Music producers and lawyers are not dumb .. It's musicians who require Fame and money that are dumb..

In the 80s there were teenagers living in ther parent's basement who wanted to be Rockstars. All they wanted to do is PARTY,DRUGS,GIRLS AND CARS. Record producers and lawyers see Rockstar music differently. They know the benefits of investing into that band.. Later on musicians complaining that they got robbed by music producers and lawyers.. Lawyers and producers gave musicians exactly what they wanted. FAST CARS,DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL.. why are the complaining they got exactly what they wanted
