Should Spencer Danielson be the next Head Coach of Boise State?

Taken from the back end of my game review I thought this needed to also be a separate video as SD continues to gather supporters and the team picks up steam under his leadership. What are your thoughts on this topic Bronco Nation?

Idk if he has interviewed or will interview, but I like Ryan Grubb. Has helped coach a bunch of high scoring teams. Issue is if he has any success in 1-2 years he’s gone I feel. I would just like them to go offensive.

I’ll just leave one thing here: CHRIS PETERSEN was the OC when he was hired. No head coaching experience, but the right guy!! And ended up being our best coach ever.

I have followed BSU for most of my life. I have seen the teams respect most of the coaches been willing to follow because of the position of the coach. I have never seen the team rally around and seemingly love a coach like the team has in the last two weeks with SD. He deserves a serious look. I don't want to go back to the Brian Harsin era.

Im not 100% sold on SD but I wonder if Jeanty and others would have even played after EMAC left or whether their portal plans have changed thanks to SD. Perhaps SDs charisma and coaching talents are exactly what BSU needs.

Keep SD within the program at all costs, he is great for recruiting and the players love him. However I dont think he is cut out to be HC at this very moment. He is still a young guy who has yet to reach his potential as a coach. Bring in an experienced, offensive minded HC for a couple seasons and I think SD will keep learning and eventually be the HC of the future.

I don't know whether SD is the right choice or not, but I'm sure glad I'm not the guy having to make that decision. If anyone is built for this it's Dickey. We are blessed to have him. On one hand, SD has done a 180 with the program in just 3 weeks. Changing certain routines, habits, on and off the field. He has the spirit of a HC. Players have rallied behind him like I've never seen. But I don't know if it would be right in the long run. What would the production look like? We're looking to get back to winning 10-12 games a season. Can SD with no experience do that? I'm behind BJs take, if it's not a home run name, like Kellen or a Jimbo (just an example, not that Jimbo would even consider Boise) or something like that, we need to retain SD.

What are the requirements of this hire? My opinion and not in any order: 1. Great coach - winning and manager of game 2. Great motivator of players 3. Gains and keeps trust of players 4. Great recruitor 5. Man of integrity that develops players of integrity 6. Puts players needs first in this era of NIL and portal. Good manager of player personnel. Truly invested in players. 7. Great leader and mentor to staff 8. Accepted, admired, and respected by Bronco Nation and boosters 9. Can stand up to BSU Administration 10. Not a control freak and can trust his staff 11. Have a pleasing personality and be passionate about the Bronco program and brand The only one that I’m not sure about with Danielson is #9

There is too much emphasis on how the team likes Danielson. For sure they do, but the enthusiastic response to him has more to do with locker room leadership. No team should play for the coach alone; you play for the team. A coach will let you down but a team won’t. When one member of the team is down others fill in and lift him up. If Dickey hires someone other than Danielson, the leadership and “the team” will respond with enthusiasm. Players would rather be coached to be better no matter who the coach is. They recognize that. They want to play for the coach who will make them better and win. Beyond just the relationship with the players, a good HC must know other coaches. He has to surround himself with good coaches; frankly, people smarter than him. Hiring someone with blisters, scars, bruises, and relationships is important. Danielson’s presser entrance was interesting; asking the media if they were “juiced.” It fell flat. A good HC knows the situation. It was the media, not the team, boosters, or fans. I have a tendency to be cynical. However, I never felt this way about Petersen or Harsin. They always struck the right tone-well almost. Most of the time, good times or bad, they struck the right tone. And if they were a little snarly, it was likely deserved. My criticism of Danielson is more than his public persona. Even in the good years as a DC, I always thought his defense played more on emotion. The secondary always seemed undisciplined. Even this year, that has been his complaint and noted by others. In the past, the Bronco’s offensive performance was in direct relationship to where the defense got the offense the ball. This was either by a turnover or by forcing a three-and-out deep into the opponent’s territory. In other words, getting the ball with less than an 80-yard drive in front of you. It seems as if this so-called bend-don’t-break defensive scheme leaves the offense with a lot of work to do. AA’s apparent philosophy was for the offense to have long sustained drives, leaving the defense time to rest and be fresh. There is another way to do that; get your three-and-out and go rest. The time of possession arrow will still be in your favor. I’ll be rooting for the team and Danielson this weekend and whatever bowl game they play. If Danielson is hired and is the real deal, that will be great. I’ll root for his success and say I had his back all along. I’m a fan and allowed to waffle.

Question : Do you go for exceptional coach that only wants to use Boise State as a stepping stone for 1 maybe 2 years vs a coach that is a very good coach that wants to stay hear for 4, 5 or more years?

I agree with you. I would keep him in his previous position and hopefully, get Kellen Moore in. They would be a good team. It is possible Kellen could be without a team, next year, as rumors have it Belichic could be coming in after he is fired from NE.

The problem with Andy was he seemed to be okay with drives stalling out. Have to be careful getting a "proven" coach might just use us as a stepping stone and stay for a year or two and leave we would be back in this situation SD doesn't seem like he would never leave

@@BroncoBleymaier Yes! In a idyllic world, Kellen Moore would be HC and SD would be DC. I believe Moore has that recruiting power but SD knows the pulse of that locker room. I’ve spoken to several players on that team and they all have nothing but high praise for him. We’ll see…

With most other ADs SD would be the next coach of the BSU broncos. With JD, he will pick the highest level of coach he can get. If that ends up being SD then he will pick him. This may end up being a big hire coming for a few years then leaving. I do not know if anyone better than SD will seriously look at the job so he may have a good chance. Whether or not we are, I think the rest of CFB sees BSU as has beens. Which is not true of course.

I’m for bringing in an outside coach. The kids love Spencer but you need to remember what the defense’s weakness this year. Granted some of that might have been on Andy. I hope they keep Spencer as DC because it will help keep the team together!

I guarantee SD Wii not be the next HC. I can hear it in JD’s voice. He wants a bigger fish and I think that’s the right move. I totally trust JD to hire the right guy and of course Kellen Moore would be a no-brainer, but Kellen would need to finish out the NFL season which is in January and JD has said he wants to hire a new coach before then; like maybe even the day after the MWC championship game. Not sure the timing lines up. Maybe Dinwiddie as I prefer an offensive minded HC. SD is a great guy as I’ve always said, but his defense was not exactly stellar this year. Also, I worry about a HC that constantly talks about crying. He recently said if I have to talk about Jeanty I’ll start crying. That’s just too soft in my eyes to be considered a HC. I do like some emotion which is nice compared to AA who showed no emotion, but with a tough sport like football we have to stop the crying. Also, please everyone for the love of everything that is green and good on this earth stop talking about Harsin as the next potential HC. I can promise you it will not be Harsin. Harsin’s personality is too prickly and players don’t love the guy. It says a lot about a coach when nobody was sad or missed Harsin after he left for Auburn, in fact it was a relief to see him go. He’s a bit of a control freak which doesn’t work. Unbelievable that we talk of a guy that was run out of town at Auburn who never won a big game there. So far in over his head. Also the players didn’t like him and Bo Nix transferred. Boise State is not going to hire him back. JD is far too smart to make a dumb decision like that. President Tromp had issues with him too. Been there done that let’s move on and stop this silly talk of bringing Harsin back. JD will hire the best available and it won’t be from the current staff. In JD we trust!!

Disagree about USU. we lost two very winnable games under AA. I doubt the team dynamic would have brought their best performance. And who knows who would already be declaring for the portal by now. SD and the staff changed everything

I really would be shocked if Danielson is named head coach at Boise State. I think less than 10% chance. Dickey gets his big chance to go out and make a big hire for the football program. Just don't see him hiring in house. Not saying Danielson should or shouldn't get the job, just don't see it as likely. I think Avalos coaching would have won the Utah State game, but likely lost AF. Jeanty's "injury" would have likely been season ending if Avalos had stayed.
