However you can tell it won't be handled well in this day and age as people hate being told they could do better. @@chillreview636 I am so fucking sorry for the college essay bro. Truthfully, I don't think it'd get very far if it were fresh. As far as a society, we've gotten better technology but we've substantially regressed when it comes to being people as a whole. Back in the aughts, most people kind of knew Al Sharpton was a fucking sleezebag and didn't give his grievances the time of day. The guy lost his fucking mind and went on a rant over the MLK speech, and clearly missing the entire point of the speech because he didn't even bother watching it. Adult Swim allowed Aaron to get away with Rollo Goodlove who was such a direct attack at both Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Now they'd fucking buckle if like, BLM started bitching. Boondocks came at the best and worst time depending on how you look at it. The best time because it was able to flourish to the degree it needed to without being struck down due to cancel culture shit, but the worst time because the messages it purveyed are needed now more than ever where they can go viral and spread like wildfire overnight for honestly, all demographics. Every demographic should have had something akin to The Boondocks, just a good way to address some very real problems and speak to some tragic truths in hopes that we could do better and doing so in a tasteful way without being preachy. I think what we really never got to appreciate was, yeah we had this type of cancellation type mentality in the past. We've had numerous moral panics such as, Communism/McCarthyism era, the Satanic Panic in the like 80s where DnD would make your kids become Satanists, late 90s with video games making your kids violent, early 2000s with War on Terror... Although throughout all of that time, I feel like because it was then almost all driven by Evangelical Conservatives that were more or less a complete joke we kind of didn't care. The issue now is most of this kind of censorship is driven by the polar opposite end of the spectrum, the Progressive Left who have given us moral panics such as "Video Games will make men sexist/xenophobic", "Everything disagreeing with me is Russian misinfo", "Wokealization"... Except they are fairly new at doing this so we still for whatever reason take these authoritarian nutcases seriously. Idiots think they need legislation, I think they need a paper bag. I like to believe that maybe in a couple years we can calm down enough to be intelligent enough as a society to understand when something is actually racist and when it isn't despite involving racial subtext. For example, I can't really pick a single moment in Boondocks, like a bit, or anything any say "This is racist." Not even in the smarmy "Well, racism technically is... this is actually prejudice..." way. Just, even the one Al Sharpton complained about, MLK's speech. There's nothing objectively racist, or prejudiced about it. It's not like he's saying "Oh yeah, ALL black people are like this", no, it's quite literally a more expansive version of that old I think Chris Rock skit about how there's two types of black people. It also isn't something specifically about black people either, it's not like only black people have this conundrum, we have it too with Caucasians, they're called "White Trash". In all seriousness I'd like when people calm down, we find an all-inclusive word across every race (Tbh, I feel Human is the race) that describes the worst examples of people imaginable. The dregs of society. That isn't really to say that it'd be utterly impossible for him to not get cancelled entirely if John was still with us and all VAs were into it. Let's just assume Aaron has everything legally to produce Boondocks and that John Witherspoon is still alive, with all voices down. It would be a lot better for him now because he'd be able to crowdfund it via donations, or a Patreon where he would only be required to obey KZbin's guidelines. Or, he could independently publish it on like his own site given people know who he is and at that point he just needs to have the team within the budget he gets from fan funding which would probably very much be doable. Vivziepop does this exact thing with Helluva Boss and they're about to drop the I think 19th episode of a very well animated adult comedy cartoon. In fact, Aaron would hilariously have the authority to be even more ballsy. Adult Swim couldn't pussy out and pull the BET episode, Aaron puts that through his own site and can just say "My house, my rules." If he took shots at someone, he could be relentless and make responses each episode instead of having to wait a whole season and generally a year for a reaction. I.E Rollo would be in the next episode following the MLK one instead of in season 2. An added perk is he could make episodes as long as he wanted/could afford to. There'd be no arbitrary "This must be purely episodic, and fit within a 22 minute timeframe." So yeah, while we could effectively look at like he could get cancelled, if he did it independently with fan funding and didn't need some kind of network contract he would be entirely immune from it. The only way they could deprive him of funding would be to what exactly? You think the fans who would contribute to the production of Boondocks are going to complain about Aaron saying the shit that made them his fans to begin with? Unless he directly attacked them or the quality went to absolute shit they'd still support him. Fuck, he'd arguably now that I think about it probably have an even lower production cost. There's a fair few freelance animators who are top fucking notch he could commission, and some I guarantee you would gladly lend their talent to producing certain bits. It would allow him to also experiment with multiple styles in between episodes if he really was trying to find something new for whatever reason. I'm thinking like Lil Darkie's music videos, Bushido is a very good example of what I'm kind of envisioning. In a way too, it would allow Aaron to give certain artists a spotlight that he felt deserved a bigger audience. When a studio animates something, nobody really gives two shits about the credits when it comes to the animation team. When individuals animate something, people take a lot more notice to that and follow them for new shit they personally put out. So while the hypothetical of "If Boondocks were made today" could reasonably just be as simple as "It'd definitely get cancelled due to outcry." If Aaron played his cards right he'd have even more power of what he did. As well as be able to make use of the modern internet's ability to generate momentum. Instead of negotiating a contract and getting a budget, if he had a really huge episode, suddenly his budget just fucking skyrockets for the next episode and if he keeps that momentum, the series for as long as he's able to go. He'd just need to get some form of funding from loyal fans and it hopefully be enough to get something going if it were able to happen.

@@The_Autistocrat Man... you were not lying about that being a long comment lol. No worries though. It was cool to see your thoughts on the whole "what if" of it. To go with your scenario where Aaron has all the rights to the show and the characters and can pretty much just crowd fund his own Boondocks show without AS and whoever currently own Cartoon Network - I think the show could definitely be made and the people would support it despite any call for it be cancelled similar to how people still support Dave Chappelle despite his issues with cancel culture. My worry is that the actual product won't be as good as it was back in the day. I haven't really seen anything from Aaron to suggest that he's still got his finger on the pulse of the culture like he used to. I'd love ot he proven wrong but I just don't know how good the Boondocks can in 2024 and beyond

@@chillreview636 In all honesty, I think it's times like this we need to hope that someone in the newer generations picks up the mantle with the fresh take but the similar style. I'd say he's still on the pulse for a lot because many problems are the same, just a bit further along. That would be the best perk of crowdfunding if he could though. His fans clearly liked what he's saying. They won't turn on him. One case I could see being something around George Floyd which would realistically play out much like the Obama episode where he was just neutral about it. I think a lot of people who are fans of Boondocks, or MacGruder in particular would sit and see what's said rather than freaking out and pulling support.

The Boondocks had its place, but I agree that it shouldn't come back. I think the reputation it has also makes it to have genuine critical discussion of it that isn't just "season 4 was bad because Aaron wasn't on it (which isn't even accurate) and seasons 1-3 were perfection" which ends up being a lot of it. The seasons all had their ups and downs and I think the amount of influence comedians like Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle, etc had on The Boondocks often hurt it more than helped. Like for all of the reputation it has at being this clever satire with episodes like The Trial of R Kelly, The Story of Gangstalicious Part 2, etc, it never gets the proper focus if we want to talk about how the series utilizes and depicts sexual violence or how episodes like Pause, A Date with The Booty Warrior, Attack of the Killer Kung Fu Wolf B**** are loud and wrong at the issues they're discussing. I say all of that from a genuine place of love because the Boondocks was undeniably a huge influence on Black television and film, but I also get tired of how it gets treated as illuminating these deep truths when it's also just drops the ball for everyone that isn't an able bodied, cishet, light-skinned Black man.

Nope, I would rather let it die while it still holds a great legacy and memory in people's minds. Too many writers just milk the hell out of a series and completely destroy its quality. Boondocks would have just gone downhill even more especially since Aaron McGruder left. I also personally think the show should have been more like the comics, as some characters just really lost their personality over the seasons like Huey. Don't get me wrong, I do still love rewatching the show all the time with its incredibly memorable episodes, but I think the show could have benefitted from focusing more on what the comics do. S1 Huey was incredibly moving as a main character, but he gradually lost his relevance and my attention whereas comic Huey retains those childish traits even while holding onto his beliefs. I also feel the same about Riley and Jasmine who have great show counterparts, but their comic personalities really flesh them out more. I also would have loved to see Caesar in the show.

Since the new comic strips were well received, maybe they should make a “weekly shonen” like series that retains the higher art concepts (scenery and fight scenes) from the show and making sure it stays topical. It can still take breaks in between like how the new Static Shock have “seasons” between issues. Then those seasons of The Boondocks manga can be released in graphic novel format. It’s a shame all that concept art from the reboot is only going to merchandise now.

Some episode ideas could be uncle ruckus being validated for being white as people from this day and age identify as whatever they like. It would write itself as an episode easily. Grandad being cancelled like Riley and Huey were in the special Olympics and Obama episode with how he treats his grandkids. Pretend his past fake achievements mean anything and such. Though I'd love to see how Aaron feels about Mandela oj and Cosby now with what has happened to their legacy and revealing what has changed since then. Huey would probably say "the black community can't keep heroes"

My personal opinion that it won't fly for 2 reasons: current political climate as cancel culture would simply lynch McGruder if he'll deviate from conservative and especially dems political dogma (even for a time while it obviously trashed white suburban culture the Boondocks was outright ruthless when it came to African-Americans shortcomings and problems) and to be completely honest I don't think it would say something new as first 2 seasons (3 while still had strong messages especially Obama election it was far less focused) already said everything it needed to and current episodes will mostly repeat same messages but with new characters and situations adapted to nowadays. For info I'm not even American (from Eastern-Europe to be precise) but the Boondocks really hits home for me because it heavily reminds my own place with very similar culture and problems and by watching it really shows very unfiltered view of black culture and how similar we could be despite of place and skin color. Regarding Black Jesus it also interesting that it was created with Mike Clattenberg, creator of Trailer Park Boys (brilliant show on its own right) and as result it's feel worse than both shows as it tries to emulate both styles but failing at focus as comparing with Boondocks it completely lack focus and lack of intense, gritty and improvised feeling that Trailer Park Boys had.

as much as id like to see a boondocks episode about the kendrick vs drake beef, or a piece about criticising those goofy 20v1videos, the truth is its time to let the series rest. its now up to the new era of social commentary creatives to at least attempt to reach the levels of influence and reflective ness old shows like the boondocks reached. this new age comes with alot of flaws completely unique and unseen in the past and the boondocks is a product of its time that relies heavily on the artistic minds behind it. it better to have it die with positive memories then it is to revive is as a husk of its former self. it just wouldnt make sense for it to come back

To add to some of your points. Boondocks came at the tail end of tv culture where you were watching stuff in real time. The world wasn't saturated with content yet where you would rather binge watch like today's climate. With so many perspectives out there it be challenging to capture those foreign & isolated lenses of black culture that boondocks excelled at. It's a classic show I'll always cherish but like any show it benefited from timing. Too much time has past so there better off creating something that reflects today's culture which is very hard to do in their defense. Will see who creates the next great black anime.

As much as I wouldn’t mind boondocks returning, I understand why it shouldn’t. Although I think some messaging is timeless, it truly was a show that thrived in its time because of the current state of pop culture at the time. It’s like the Def Jam games. Everybody wants them to return, but doesn’t understand that EA isn’t the same company they were in 2004. Gaming isn’t the same at all either. And cause of that, it’d be a mess if it returned in any form due to the people in charge just not understanding what made it work, and that the time it existed in played a big part in why it did so well. I really believe in the age of remakes, reboots, and sequels no one asked for, that we need to get back used to things being introduced, having its run, ending, and moving on from them. That way something else can do the same that’s just as impactful/good. Not everything needs to continue, and we need to learn that that’s okay.

Btw, I'm glad I found your channel this year, Chill. You made me appreciate The Boondocks even more than I already did.

Happy you found me too ✊🏿. And yeah, I think the greatness of the boondocks ran its course a decade ago. No need to milk it any further

Why not make a new series i dont think the boondocks needs to come back
@castortroy53996 ай бұрын
It can come back with new voice actors Regina king should not have done both voices she doesn't have range also has to be a grandad
@chillreview6366 ай бұрын
Looks like you broke the one rule of Chill Review comment section.... Regina King slander of any kind will NOT be tolerated. I'll let it slide jaut this once tho 😂 But seriously, I've never heard someone think Regina King should have only done one of the brother's voices. I think Huey and Riley are pretty distinct, especially after season 1.

dude. I like you but that is hands down the absolute worst take on south parks writing I have EVER heard lmao/

Damn what's so wrong about it? I'm a huge South Park fan btw, so I don't want it to come across like I don't think the show is funny.
@hiiipowerbass23376 ай бұрын
@chillreview636 man sorry I was ruffled. Comes off as you think the writing is all together immature. It's astounding clever, laced with immaturity and I think the difference is profound
@chillreview6366 ай бұрын
@@hiiipowerbass2337 Gotchu. I think we agree, but maybe I just didn't explain myself well enough, so that's on me. But yeah, South Park is one of the best (if not the best) at satirical humor ever. To me, a big part of the writer's genuis is in how they can take immature jokes and use them to attack complex issues and so well.

I feel Boondocks would go the way of the Simpsons and just lose its glow if it went on for 10+ more seasons, plus it'd be just peepeepoopoo mumble rap bad episodes.

I feel like the black community needs the boondocks or a show like it to remind us we can be better
@chillreview6366 ай бұрын
True, but imo the Boondocks had its time. I want to see something new and innovative take its place.

Honestly there hella content. R Kelly re trial the Huey man and the diddler where Riley was. The joker what about the time Riley went to the Kanye West church what about Riley meeting all the modern rappers including nas x. Trippie red and 69 what about the time Riley became famous rapper. What about the time. Huey was voted to become the next black president at 16
@PANDA8AKUMAАй бұрын
And it worked really well but... Bushido browns son. Was called to take a hit out on Huey and it barely failed causing a 3 part episode stretch

Boondocks reboot is just one of those things that should absolutely not happen. If you need anything to support that just look at good times (2024)

NOOOO!!!!! It will be inundated with sexually confused characters that have more sense than the heterosexual characters; they make even make Huey or Riley sweet as iced tea. NO THANKS!!!!!!!!!

Lol idk about all that, but i agree that maybe it's best if we never find out what they would with a reboot
@SammyRobinson622326 ай бұрын
So I’m might get jumped by this but in my opinion. No. And I think the main reasons is it due to being a product of its time. While it’s social commentary is great a lot of the time. When it miss. It misses or have its jokes misrepresent the point. For examples those episode about the gay rapper. A lot of people was like oh they’re warning us about P. Diddy No dumbass it was about the homophobia that’s in the black community especially in rap. Basically i think the reboot will just be edgy for the sake of edgy or people not having enough media literacy to understand the point. I think the best outcome for this is to have newer projects that aren’t reboots. Being inspired by the Boondocks. Understanding what work and what doesn’t work in todays time and even the past. Cause newsflash 🥷 they tried to cancel the shit back then. And just go on from there. Like for example. A new series about 4 black students from different household and background all attending an majority white private school and they’re four years attending it. Any enough rambling and sorry for this long ass essay. Also can we stop having us black woman being portrayed negativetly even in our black shows. It’s not that hard. Okay I’m done now
@chillreview6366 ай бұрын
Hahahahaha you had a lot to get off your chest. But I could see a lot of what you said happening if they ever did manage to bring the show back. I agree that it should stay as a product of its time.

@@chillreview636 First thanks for replying Second you’re correct in that the boondocks always interest me despite never growing up with it when it air (late gen z 2008) Third. Are you going to make a video about the good times reboot. Cause oh boy have I heard really bad things about it and it sounds rightfully so. With only one good review on it and that person had gotten clowned on in the comment section. I’ll understand if you won’t due to your sanity. I’m just wondering.
