Being better defensively is necessarily not the same thing as adding only defensive-minded players. You need guys who can battle for the puck and guys who can move the puck out of the d-zone and/or keep it in the o-zone and I think Steve is well aware of this. I also think these attributes is something that all of Steve's 1st round picks have in common. If Necas is that kind of player I'd be happy to have him

as a canes fan I can tell you he's not. He's stronger and more well rounded than he used to be but his biggest strength is his offensive creativity. He's at best an average winger defensively.

We don't need more offense we need more toughness bring up Kasper, Mazur and Soderblom give these young kids some minutes and let them prove they can stay.

We need a number one center and if you’ve watched any hurricanes games or heard his teammates talk about him, he’s literally their most skilled forward. And he’s right handed which this team lacks. Look what happened to the Dallas stars when you don’t have enough offense. Defense and grinding just isn’t enough sometimes.

@vinny1537 also the Dallas Stars made it pretty far into the playoffs. The Florida Panthers play a defensive game and they are in the cup finals. Detroit last defense and discipline it's pretty obvious. Scoring isn't their issue

They can do both. Assuming the re-signing of RFAs Lucas Raymond and Joe Veleno they would only have 8 forwards under contract with 5 or 6 spots to fill. They can sign a free agent and/or make a trade and still have the roster space for prospects.

I understand why we’re gun shy when paying players after the awful contracts we were locked into for years, but we need to pay someone who we know will produce if we want to make the next step. It costs money to have nice things.

Redwings need to get better at pro scouting. Draft scouting is probably best in the league but if you want to go far in the playoffs you need top pro scouting. Just take a look at the success Panther's having and they have done excellent trades last two years.
