No. It shouldn't.

Negative seems over powered in this case, especially if negative can say that “all federal student debt” includes all FUTURE federal student debt too

yes, it'd definitely be worth it to limit the scope of the topic up front of your case

I somewhat disagree. I haven’t watched the video yet lol. I think that including future forgiveness opponents the ability for pro to better argue solvency for gender and racial debt gap. As con, a good argument could simply be saying that a pro world forgiveness one time would raise future tuition prices do to inflation, and wouldn’t solve the problem whatsoever.

that’s an abusive interpretation of the topic

No the US government should not forgive student loan debt because Taxpayers like you and I are on the hook because it is not federal government monies , the federal government is paid by the taxpayers to manage the student loan debt.

No they should not forgive the debt. There is no free lunch in economics. Someone is still paying for that debt. People taking out the debt didn't have a gun to their head. Also. Doesn't solve the root problem of why schooling is so damn expensive. Gov caused the problem. The solution isn't more gov intervention.

The long term (though politically unviable) solution is just, stop government school loans

Absolutely agree

One thing that's not clear to me: why is it bad for aff if a majority of the debt that would be forgiven is grad school debt? Like, why shouldn't grad school debt be paid off? I feel like there are a bunch of academics and teachers and whatnot with lots of grad school debt and shitty salaries who would be really helped be the resolution. Wouldn't making teaching and academia more financially realistic be a good thing?

It's funny cause it's intuitive to me but not to some other people, including yourself, so probably also plenty of judges. Here's my thoughts: 1. Inasfar as student debt forgiveness is an inflation/tax mediated transfer of wealth, fully half of that wealth is going to I. Those with advanced degrees like doctors and lawyers, who tend to make lots of money, and II. Those whose contribution to society may be questionable, like many humanities degrees (debatable point but it's intuitive to me that a 100k music or arts degree gives society very little value and certainly not 100k; music and art are for the people, they're beautiful expressions but they're free) 2. Student debt forgiveness isn't at all a cost mediator, it would definitely drive tuition prices up. A plan that reduced tuition, like through grad school price caps would make school more accessible; this plan does the opposite. 3. Given that grad school debt is way higher, those benefits go to only a few people. At least with undergrad, the debt is lower on average, so it helps more people. So, robbing from the poor to give to the rich (agreed though, it's good for the rich), while driving up tuition costs, helping the privileged few, and making the moral opportunity cost choice of helping lawyers over homeless veterans or urban elementary schools etc

This topic is so hard to make a good argument for pro! As far I can see pro only has the economy argument as forgiving all student loan debt may end up harming future minority’s. If the forgiveness cycle were to happened it would most likely lead to colleges only accepting kids from higher income areas as those would be the students most likely to pay their debts.
