How's your whakapapa related to the whenua? Whakapapa is the root to maoritanga as is the whenua, the two must go together. What relevance does your cultural heritage enable you to disregard the endogenous people of that country. Your tipuna are from here, and nowhere else, whatever you may imagine. Get back here and take back your own whenua instead of displacing another people. Kawa cannot be changed, neither can the origins of your whakapapa, however tikanga can be modified, but for the same reasons must line up with your whakapapa to the whenua, which you do not. Traditions and protocols are related to this country not to another. It would be better that an event center for maori groups, rather than establish a marae which is far better without encroachment on another people's whenua and cultural identity.

@CatsandJP just wondering are you maori or connected in te ao maori. You cant compare our culture such as our Matauranga maori tikanga and kawa to churches and social cultural clubs. Our whakaaro and how we operate and think as a people can not be compared. Simply because From one tangata whenua to another its about respect and empathy. We know what its like to have foreigners come over to our land disregard our own beliefs and culture and impose their own. We know what its like to fight to have a voice. We know what its like to have land taken and seeing others thrive on our loss. Nothing was given to us What we have today as maori is the result of our tupunas fight and sacrifice. Why would we align ourselves into doing the same to other tangata whenua. My nana use to say when u go to other iwis territory you respect their tikanga and kawa because that is their home and you are just visiting. In our time you would never catch someone from ngapuhi building a marae on tainui land and vice versa. Even people from moana nui a kiwa who have made NZ their home for generations and generations know and respect our place as tangata whenua. A marae and a building where you can go to connect with others from your culture are two different things. A marae has mana its own tikanga and kawa, it has its own spiritual connection to the whenua that is yours and your tipuna.

Well over 200 years. There was a maori family in Northcote, Melbourne Australia. And they even had streets named after them and they still stand in 2024 and "on". Those streets are Oamaru St, Hakatere St and Wakanui Street. They were there during the Gold rush and even the streets have old remnants of maori living there. Flax and harakeke trees. And even the area looked like maori land and they even had a cemetery. But the white english who call themselves australians with there guns forcibly killed them and chased them of the land along with the indigenous and forces them into one area to live with indigenous as they wanted an all white australia. Even though the whites call themselves natives too but they can't speak the language, don't celebrate the culture and not even the Indigenous call themselves australians. That's why you never see them sing the national anthem at any sports they play. But as for a marae it should be upto the indigenous tribe of the area. And if they say yes then so be it. I don't see anything wrong with it. They was our church before white people came with Christian pagan churches. But our marae are uses for a place of gatherings, feeding and cooking foods for the tribes and local tribes about, weddings, funerals and birthdays, culture days etc. I mean no other culture helps the indigenous more than maoris. When aussies tried to kick a whole aboriginal town so they could exploit the land for its minerals. Who stood up for indigenous. The maori. And what happened the indigenous kept their town in W.A. Same as the gas pipeline in america on native Indian land. Who came and supported the native american indians. The maoris. We aint here to build a marae to preach Christian paganism. We there to share our cultures with others. And if anyone likes and wants to be apart of it. Then I'm cool with that. But except who you are and where you are originally from and embrace culture rather than wanting to be that culture then you've found your inner peace. That's why we from this side of the world In The pacific and its land and people know where we from. And we don't call our selves anything else but what we actually are. We are not like white people and go to another country and call ourselves that when we are not. I mean get real people. Would you white Aussies live in Asia and calm yourselves asians. No the asians will call you foreigners and us dark people of the pacific austranesians. Thats what we are known as from Asia long before white people came. So I say let them build a marae. Maori would be happy If indigenous wanted to build a aboriginal cultural center in new zealand. I'm sure rotorua the home of maori culture embraces all cultures and has indigenous aborigines, native american indians and aborigines, sth american mayans, aztecans who visit new zealand nearly every year. Even aborigines are going over to nz for better education in culture wise and sports like rugby. You just don't see it. But we maoris do on our maori TV shows and NITV Australia.
