Anyone that agrees with inflicting military service on young adults, should also be made to serve the same two years. We'll then see how quickly support drops.

I did my 2 years (1957-1959) & have my own home WITHOUT A MORTGAGE & I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth - I just WORKED hard. It isn't the warmongers wanting National Service back but it IS those who don't like being told what to do (even for their own good) who oppose it. I did 2 years NS (1957-1959) & it was a great experience giving me the facility of thinking through problems & finding solutions. But of course the namby pamby youngsters today don't like being told what to do or when to do it. They are AFRAID of discipline & learning how to be proper adults. Just look at the number of work-shy young people in Britain today !!

I'm sure the access to FREE childcare, FREE school lunches, and FREE after school clubs, would give the female contingent NO EXCUSES! Not being able to acquire a passport, or a driving license, as a British citizen, without proof of "service", would also be a strong incentive? Access to a mortgage or personal loans might also be included as incentives to "comply"? You want to be regarded as a "Citizen"? ...Behave like one! You would probably expect an immigrant to do it?

Most people my age (40) will agree there is nothing for teenagers to do now; no youth clubs, scouts and brownies not as popular, cadets etc and for those looking to get into gangs to feel a belonging and kinship would be far better off joining the forces 'family'

Yes absolutely we should bring it back. It doesn't necessarily have to be military based, it could be volunteering in the community. I would also like for it to include maybe a week away from home on residential. Something like that would teach youbg people essential life skills that will stay with them and who wouldn't want that? It's also worth noting that countries that introduced it saw a significant drop in crime.

.....unless you are in full time education? IF you acquire a degree or equivalent, then you can apply to be a "Short Commissioned Officer/Manager"! This would make immediate use of your education within the public service role! (military or civil roles!) If National Service was 3 years instead of 18 months, the impact of the whole project would have a more profound and longer lasting effect! Value for money!

They dont need to spend 2 years in a military battle field role..The Army Navy and Air force need logistics people so folklift truck driving is a skill to be used on civvy street. Book keeping, basic first aid/Triage. Music/bands.Stock control supply roles.Vehicle maintenance .There are lots of roles that dont require going to a war zone!

Of course they wouldn't "like" or "choose" to do it, that's the point! Germans do either 9 months of public service, i.e. volunteering anywhere they like, or 6 months military/police. This argument is about 2 weeks...I find this absolutely incredible. I'm all for the German model. My friend did 9 months in Argentina at a school and he now runs a multinational business. This is the way. About time we make compulsory something for teens once more.

I can see both views in that why would young people do it if they have no hope for a future. But I can also see that perhaps a month compulsory service will teach discipline and give youngsters purpose. National service would be a disaster for the armed services, especially considering they need fewer actual troops as the years go on. Most of our warfare is conducted using drones and computers, so similarly to car manufacturing, there’s an increased need for STEM students and less for actual manpower. Also to have a load of teenagers overcrowding the army who don’t actually want to be there would be terrible for the professionalism of the army itself. Vietnam is a perfect blueprint for why National service doesn’t work. On the flip side to have a bunch of angry teenagers come home who know how to shoot a rifle isn’t bad way of threatening a useless Tory government into actually doing their jobs. I’d like to see Bojo lie to a bunch of war weary 21 year olds with guns and a crack shot. Lol😂

Most young people including myself don't meet the entry requirements, thanks to increased awareness of mental conditions such as ADHD/Autism, and psychiatric illnesses which was never discovered in the 60s. Let's not forget that teens these days experiment with drugs, and if they've used within the last 3 years.. this is also an immediate disqualification from the armed forces. My application was denied just because i needed a sicknote during lockdown as i was unemployed and needed to claim universal credit, i told my doctor my confidence was low and he wrote anxiety on my sicknote without a formal diagnosis, now it's on my medical records permanently. The Armed forces only wants squeaky clean applicants, which are hard to find in the youth of today. This is why national service would fail today.

Back then it was a different world. There was an incentive to learn skills in trades that could set people up for life. Today those skills are not valued any more. We outsource so much to places like china or import cheap labour. So where is the incentive? We can't compete with that. Even in my office job it's much the same with most of the work being outsourced to other countries and maintaining a very small internal team. Luckily I'm hanging on somehow. What would we be fighting for exactly? We are already being torn apart from within, so that needs to change first or it's all pointless. We need to start building something we can all be proud of again, celebrating the people who deserve it and live good upstanding lives. Making more possitive role models for the youngsters and something for them to be proud of and want to stand for. Currently it feels like they are trying to make us into nothing more than a patch of land that anyone can take a piece of and give nothing back in return.
