Mike has been going a bit V10-mad lately, be it Dodge Vipers or V10 TVRs. And with his V10 MX-5 project being delayed until 2022, he's decided to get a ready-made V10 in his life as a daily? What should he go for? You decide!

These cars are amazing, particularly even in manual. You simply have to conduct your maintenance preventatively which is no problem. The issue with these cars is they are affordable, and so most people that pick them up are broke and end up not spending any money on preventative maintenance. Even the SMG is a misunderstood transmission. It has lubrication issues, and is very easy to maintain and prevent from breaking with proper lubrication, that's it.
@akaadamrg
@akaadamrg 2 жыл бұрын
Had the M5 and can tell you you're wrong. While the car is absolutely amazing, it broke monthly for years. I had the SMG (it's faster than they say here in it's fastest setting at 65ms.) And while it was only a matter of time, that part didn't break. I did have a gasket leak all the transmission fluid on to my clutch and flywheel ($12,000 gasket failure). Each of the four actuators have weak plastic parts and the teeth wear out on every one. At $1000 each plus hours of labour - just do them all at once. At just 130,000 my catalytic converters were inefficient. All four of them needed to be replaced and two are built into the headers. Want to change the battery? Better have a bmw dealer close. Oil change? 9 liters of $20/l oil. Windshield? $1500 if you have the HUD. But that sound 🤤. I refer to that car as my crazy ex girlfriend. A wicked fun ride but she has some screws loose

@@akaadamrg a lot of what you described could have been prevented and the rest is wear and tear. I am amazed you went 130kmi on the original cats. The SMG issue may have been caught if there was preventative maintenance done on the pump.

I have a 2010 M5 with 14K, yes I don't drive it much but when I do I just go to the canyons for spirited driving. It is a blast of a car. They loosen the bearing tolerances on the mains so the bearing issue is not as bad in the later versions. 2010 was the last year.

I work remote so it would be more of a weekend or intown go getter so to speak and once a month where I have to drive from Kentucky to Nashville, TN for company meetings. My income not a problem. However the problem is finding one that has been reasonably kept up.

I owned an E60 M5 for 4.5 years after E39 M5 ownership. After the E60 M5 I owned an F10 M5. The E60 M5 is just an Epic car with so much soul and character which the later cars lack even though they have a lot more power. When my SMG pump gave up I decided to converted my E60 M5 to 6 speed manual with OE parts same as North American cars. I have since converted 2 E60 M5 to 6 speed manual in the UK and onother on its way. I loved my E60 M5 both in SMG and 6 speed manual, it has so much soul and character its pretty much irreplaceable with anything else and you should 100% go for it and do a buy.

Great advice - I've had a 2001 XK8, 2004 XKR and 2010 XKR and they've all been great. Oh, and reliable (quirk-free!), which many won't believe (especially if they've never owned one). And they don't look like 90% of other cars on the road, too. I've now got an F-Type V8 R AWD and that blows the XKR out of the park (space notwithstanding!).

The E60 M5 was the best car ive ever owned despite its faults (for me the gearbox at low speed and a little midrange torque hole likely correctable by remap). I did drive an M6 version and i will accept it drove somewhat better handling wise you could feel the balance was notably better with weight saving in the right places. With eibach springs and 12mm spacers both the M5 and M6 look as they should without any compromises because my only other gripe is the front ride height and backward lean when stationary robbing the car of purpose While it seemed weird the US market got a manual (a market that loves an auto i might add!) unlike EU only getting SMG ive read the manual is like a stick in a bucket of stones and pretty awful. In fact i found the nr identical 6 spd manual of the e46 M3 a sloppy horrid mess too. I actually prefer the SMG but would i go back to V10 M5/M6 id go back with £40k with a full rod bearing update and 7spd DCT conversion in mind with a few goodies like Eventuri intake, long tube headers on to IPE F1 exhaust and some mild suspension tweaks. The brakes were abit suspect too now i think of it fading rather fast

I have an E92 M3 - the S65 engine is supposedly derived from the S85. The MPG isn't great - currently sitting at 15mpg combined. The V10 will be worse. Having said that, its worth every penny in fuel, road tax (about £600 a year) and the inevitable M tax on parts. If you have the itch, scratch it. Life is too short and eventually we won't be able to drive cars like this. I would say go for the E61 M5 if you can find one. They are rare beasts but look the best out of the S85 driven cars.

I'll be honest, I find the M6 (well the entire E63 platform) a very jarring looking thing. Especially since as a young bloke my mate had an 80's E24 635csi and I had the E28 M535i, so the E63 was always a visual disaster to me. If you have sponsorship for the repairs (and cheap labour) then why not? The V10 with the 'M' button on will be a drama every trip. For a lowly private 'punter', it's technical for the sake of technical, has a disengaging gearbox and repair costs that would be better put into something less compromised. The values are right on this one. It's a bit of a stinker, albeit a blisteringly fast, briefly entertaining one..
