Fun fact (obvious in retrospect): if you remove a diatonic scale from the chromatic scale, you're left with a pentatonic scale (a tritone away from the diatonic major you picked). E.g. everybody knows that C major + F♯ pentatonic = all 12 pitches (white keys + black keys). But it's of course also true in reverse: C pentatonic + F♯ major = all 12 pitches. Or F major + B pentatonic, etc. It's like the Euler's identity of scales

Debussy uses a scale a semitone away from a pentatonic to get a dominant 9th sound (G, A, B, D, F), similar to the dominant 13th sound you were getting (D, E, F, A, B)-I'll find the piece if I can; he uses it in the "Trois Nocturnes" to get a minor sound (mm. 156-159; Ab minor 6th with a passing 4th), but that's not the piece I have in mind ... your videos are always brilliant! many thanks!

Great video. Thanks. Tim Richards talks about the melodic minor pentatonic (aka flat 3 pentatonic) in his book 'Exploring jazz piano 2' , although mainly in terms of how the scale can be used in improvisation rather than about the voicings that can be generated from it.

Such a dope sound, C melodic minor penta over B, like B alt. Just a thought, you get the 5 notes of C melodic minor penta just by stacking 3rds or F mixolydian. Like F9. Thanks Jeremy! 💨🐻

this makes me wonder about using the pentatonic used in Japanese traditional music, which is EFABC(E). I always thought it sounds cool although not so close to typical jazz. Anyway, if you start on the same note as you did (to keep the notes related by whole/half-steps), then it looks like a 'natural/harmonic minor pentatonic' ABCEF (as opposed to your melodic minor ABCEF#), which in the same key as you would be CDEbGAb. However, it seems a little less useful, so far... I guess if you start on the second note (FABCE), then it fits an F major lydian-type sound. (But, is it nice to have a tritone F-B in a lydian voicing???) Well, that's all I got....

I think it's definitely worth investigating different kinds of pentatonic scales. The question for me is always, "how useful are they"? I think there are lots of possibilities!

Very useful video. I was aware of the melodic minor pentatonic although not by that name, but never got around to harmonising it that way. Great tip! Thanks
