Should we categorise Spirits?

I differentiate between what was once organic and what was never organic. I call former organic entities "ghosts" and never organics I term spirits. I don't know anyone else who does it the same way I do. I am sure they do, but I haven't run into them.

The case of fae is an example of how blurry the categories of spirits can be. They are said to be a different species than humans but they are also said to be the spirits of people of the Stone Age. That would explain why they are said to he shorter, having magickal shots and being find around tumuli that are actually burial mounds. So in that lens you can see the fae has both a nature spirit and an ancestor.

I’m not coming at this from a folkloric perspective (just an animist one) but here are my thoughts. Usually, if I encounter a spirit out in the world and don’t know where they come from, I will ask them- where are you from? who are you? Sometimes this gets me somewhere, sometimes not. It is a good way for them to communicate what they find to be important about their identity, though, which can be helpful for offerings and addressing them.

This is where I come from as well, sort of establishing a conversational connection via the others identity Like I pray to this God, God of this thing/skill for help in it I feel that it improves my communication skills

Hey, perrenialist chaote here. I tend to agree that categorizing spirits is a bit of a fool's errand. Although, if they do present as being apart of a specific tradition or from a specific plane of reality, then ill use correlated correspondences as a framework. Regardless, its more dependant on how the spirit presents itself than any of my own preconceptions.

That’s a very interesting take on spirits. I think I agree but my brain wants to categorize the spirits as that’s wha it’s used to. Usually when I’m out in nature I just refer to the spirits as vaettir because like you said, we don’t know if they’re land, ancestral or animal spirits

As a ghost cuddler (feeling type spirit communicator) I tend to have a few very broad categories, like sometimes I feel by touch and sometimes by an emotional pulse or wave... Its all very vague since at best I can get to the point of simple communication but even then... Sometimes spirits lie, not all of them Im sure a truth spirit wouldn't but how would I know? it's very tempting to build further categories but I see your points and would add that many of us are new to this and while foundational knowledge is a wonderful thing building a foundation when you cant REALLY tell stone from sand means maybe a different approach altogether is best. So I'll be practicing caution when it comes to such things, I know the spirits I know and I know what they are to me and that is my foundation. Much love o777

This is super fascinating as a philosophical question. Personally I don't think we *should*, but it is nonetheless a very human footprint. We love to think in terms of science. Spirits are so broad, as they include both demons and gods, to elementals and souls. I think I heard somewhere that there are three types of beings; angels, spirits and 'primordial entities'

I think it's okay to categorize spirits, as long as its just their job your talking about. For example, any person is always a human, but that person can be a fireman, a police officer, a power plant operator, an artist, etc. The same way it can be said that every spirit is a spirit, but it can have jobs like a spirit guide, guardian of something. Now, one could ask 'does the same apply to deities'. Personally, I call a spirit a deity, when it is a spirit with much energy that is known by cultures. The word deamon originally meant 'unnamed god', therefore a deity that is unknown is called a deamon (in my personal way of thinking). I don't believe you should put spirits in boxed and habe expectations for them, but that the categories can be used to ask them what their purpose is.

i think it would be best not to label spirits as, at least in my opinion, think of it as labelling people. no one likes being labelled as 'the one black girl' or 'that therian kid' or 'those weird brunettes'. people have names but also lives and stories and connections. the same way its rude to label people as things and label their experiences as 'exclusive to their group', i believe its safe for me to say that i don't think we should be labelling a spirit or groups of spirits for that matter. but pls, feel free to correct me if i am wrong. (ps: i love your channel and your work. may the rest of the year and the next be as you deserve it to be)

I think it's of no importance which category the spirits falls in, but connecting, communicating and receiving whatever message it has foe you. Particularly, I have never met or seen a spirit. I just heard the niise they made and they had a reason fof that. Or I just saw like a shadow running behind me from one side to the other. I would like to really meet a spirit and communicate with them.

Not much of a label person. I can get a sense if they used to be human or not. There’s different intensities and feelings but labels can be limits. Spirits can also evolve. So it’s just easier to be polite when applicable and see what the spirit is willing to share. If I’m stuck, I will ask my guides or deities if it is something I need to be aware of. A lot of times, it isn’t 😅 even a lot of spirits I’ve met have a “I just exist” vibe.

I calla them all friends even the mischievous ones and when I am speaking to them, I always tell them why I call them friends and I mean no disrespect its more of because I am not sure of the type and for me, although I am good at sensing sometimes seeing them and feeling their energies I can't remember all the types or names of them, so I put them all as spirit friends and I have not had any real issues by calling them friends I think that this is because though out my life I have had many friends of many types probably every type of friend a person can think of. When it comes to spirits I usually just say hello and then something along the lines of an apology if I am distracting or interfering with them in someway, and if they have anything i should know it is ok to let me know or if they dotn want me around to let me know, but it would be nice to know why . Of course, it is different when one comes to visiting me, which lately hasn't been very often, which is kind of a surprise because they would always be around in my small suit. Not sure why this is possibly the neighbours who are meth heads they have some negative Spirits around them, so I have my guards up but that has never stopped spirits from visiting before its been more than possibly a year like I mentioned before they were always around its tha tor maybe I just lost that part of me at home that sense them and only picks up on the more negative spirits , I could walk around my building and clear those out but they will just come back because the people are mething out or using other drugs alcohol and it isnt up to me to help them unless they ask and I won't get into all that because it is going of the topic of this video , I do sense all my spirit friends at times when I am out and about at places even sometimes walking along the roads or through the centre of busy trafficked down during the day. for myself another things when speaking communicating with spirits is that I compare it to Humans in some ways because if you meet a person with a different skin colour and start to ask them or talk to them about their culture like you actually know their culture it can be very insulting to that person instead of talking to them as a Human being, it is the same with spirits they all have personalities and it never a good idea to just generalize them because you read a few books watched a few videos maybe went to some classes which sure thy can help to get a" general " Idea but some spirits like humans can be sensitive . When I helped a person that lived on a reserve ( 1990s) and her place had more than a few mischievous spirits causing issues in her home I made that mistake, even though I studied allot and had some teaching from the a woman that was a well-known area shaman she wasn't their local shaman , they were generally all the same teaching ,I spoke to the spirit like I was part of their culture it created issues which I didn't pick up on plus there were other things going on with drugs and alcohol in her place, but I ended up explain to her on how to do it herself and to stop letting her Boyfriends and other friends doing drugs and drinking partying in her place because it was upsetting the spirits that were around, it worked when she did it but when I did it it apparently made things much worse it was because I, without knowing, disrespected the spirits, I acted and thought I fully understood but because I wasn't part of the culture and spoke like I was it created even more issues after I left , that was about 35 years ago and I learned from that because when I left her children became very afraid. I did go back and apologized in front of her family to the spirits using the drum and burning sweet grass that were there. in some cases it good to respect the spirits by also saying that if I disrespect them it wasn't my intention which I never mean any disrespect to anyone including spirits unless they disrespect me. I am not a witch I have studied many witch ways over a few years I think around 9 years and tried some of them that felt like they would fit in my life but for me, it doesn't work the same, so I use what works and by doing, so I don't mean it as disrespect because just because it may not work for me, it doesn't mean it won't work for someone else. ;)
