Universal Basic Income is one of the most divisive economic theories of the 21st century. And since the coronavirus has tanked the global economy, it has gained more and more support.
But what exactly is a basic income? And could it actually help people now that furlough is ending?

The economy is not working the way it currently is it only works for the few who have the good paying jobs everyone else the majority on less then 20,000 a year are fucked the standards of living are bad. people going homeless, to food banks and there mental health goes bad. Giving everyone enough to have the basic standard of living I.e somewhere to live, food to eat, clothes to wear and able to do something fun once a week anything else should be choice where they have to work for it. That is a basic standard of human rights in my opinion.

One small problem: In a test of "will people stop working when given UBI?" there are two factors (at least) that could make people keep working when if UBI was actually properly introduced en mass they would stop: 1. They keep working through the trial so that when the trial is over they have a job they can just continue doing. 2. They pretend as though they would continue working to skew the results in a bid to make UBI a thing so that they can stop working when it's actually introduced. As I said, this is a small problem and I still agree with pretty much your entire point. I just think it's important to point these out.

Only if all other benefits were done away with at the same time I would think. A single payment each month for all adults over 18 but no Universal Credit, no Tax Credits, no Housing Benefits, no Disability Benefits etc. is probably the only way any government could afford a basic universal income. It would also save huge sums of money in administration costs too, save money in fraud investigations and no doubt result in many other such savings as well. Whether overall it would be cheaper is something for the financial economists to work out though as the current benefits systems is hugely complex and beurocratic.

UBI can be done, these people who say it cannot be done are living in cloud cuckoo land! In order for UBI to be its namesake 'UNIVERSAL' then we could easily introduce a Universal Transactional Tax system (UTT), this would completely replace every tax in the country. UTT is basically a form of digital extraction of tax taken at source by every transaction made every second of every day. From bank transfers to payments made, payments received and would apply to commercial as well as public transactions, in particular the financial sector in London. It would be predicated on a single point of % (set by the treasury at the start of every fiscal year). I read an article a couple of years ago by a professor of finance who cited that the % could be set (as an example) at 0.0000012% of every transaction, which added up over the course of a year would equate to twice the current annual budget that the treasury currently receives in its coffers. Put that in line with UBI and although the first couple of years might see a deficit, by the time five years has passed in these models means that the government could have significant extra funds on top of the cost of UBI, with which to play with. Again though, this is on the assumption that everyone plays their part, wealthy patrons, commercial enterprises as well as the government being responsible with the annual review and % set each year. UBI is not only a seriously viable option, it is in this moment, this time in which to now apply it. People have been suffering long before this virus by almost every government that gets to power but it will now most certainly be amplified a thousand fold in the coming months as a result of the financial damage caused by this virus. Then again no conservative government would ever consider this approach, as they want the rich to stay rich and paying a fair and equal tax is an anathema to them!

Our broken economy needs a basic income. The more wealth is concentrated in a few and in non productive assets such as land and property, the less productive our economy. I'd rather we had a fairer economy in which the 1% paid their taxes and wages reflected effort in addition to supply and demand forces. We know that getting cash into the hands of poorer people will boost consumption locally, far more than by the upper percentiles of wealth distribution. So in the absence of fundamental action on inequality, the broken system needs UBI to keep their show on the road.

I'm sure these people against UBI have not experience poverty and depression linked to it . on economy side of things people will spend more when they have money to spend without worry that would increase VAT and business activities.

They could increase the tax free allowance by 6k to 18,500. That will take everyone 'working' upto 40 hours a week at national minimum wage (8.72) out of tax.

corporate welfare is the BIGGEST welfare ever. Corporations get literally trillions in free monye, tax breaks, etc. The QE that USA has been going since 2008 is basically a free zero interest monye given to banks. But let's argue about giving money to the ordinary people.

Like it or not, like so many other things that have changed in the world it will happen. it is the only way forward if humanity wants to become more civilized. Some people will fight it, and some will welcome it. but it is the next evolutionary and necessary step to make the world a better place to live. If old Boris realised this he would be a prime minister that goes down in history for changing the modern world.
