he's definitely up there but I think many will agree that goberts defense is better as a team guy. If it was strictly on individual stats then Wemby takes it but we have to factor how much that defense helped the team and yes you can blame Wembys team for not doing enough but you can't take anything from Rudy, watch him play and he does a lot on the defensive side that doesn't even show up on the stats sheets yet it always helps his teammates defend better or get in position faster etc.

Gobert literally transformed the team and got everyone to buy in to a more defensive mentality which is why they went from 15th in defense to 1st with a clear margin. Shaq doesn't know what he's talking about. For the ENTIRE span of DPOY awards, only one player won it, that wasn't on a top3 team that had a top3 defensive rating. And that was Alvin Robertson back in 86 where he broke the all time steals record in a season, all time SPG in a season, all time games with 10+ steals in a season and first and only guard in history to ever record a quadruple double. Oh, and his team still made the playoffs. And all his records still stand today.

I think Shaq is self aware and also a student of the game - he usually speaks fairly and pays his respects to others who came before him. Both things can be true here - the expectations can be high and Wemby can be living up to them in year 1. At the same time, I do think Shaq is careful in what he says because a player like Wemby has everything in front of him still, and crowning him as a rookie really doesn’t do anything to help the kid grow and push his growth process. LeBron on his podcast with JJ recently told a similar story about how first practice of his sophomore seasons, after winning every award and leading his team as a freshman to a 27-0 record, how his coach kicked him out of practice. The idea was to set the tone so LeBron stayed humble/hungry etc. I look at these Shaq comments in a similar way, and it’s refreshing because so much of the sports media (including these former players) just want to only gush over this kid already. Deep down I do believe Shaq wants to see the kid push the game and I think that’s where he’s coming from.
