Like I’ve been telling people it all depends on what you are working on if you are a auto mechanic it is good to have both because some fasteners on vehicle’s is 12 point fasteners most fasteners are 6 point but there are some 12 point fasteners on a vehicle Aircraft mechanics mostly use 12 point sockets because Jets mostly have 12 point fasteners so it just depends on what you’re doing.

The 12pt mostly makes sense on non "ratchet" wrenches for the hard to reach spaces and swing room (of course after hacking and engineering a way to break a seized bolt loose with a 6pt), with a 6pt ratchet wrench you can always rotate it to find the perfect fit, while a normal 6pt wrench is more difficult to find the perfect fit. 12pt on sockets doesn't make much sense bc you can always find the perfect fit with a 6pt socket on a ratchet.

That's true, but it's only because 12-pt sockets are not designed to be used on 6-pt head fasteners. 12-pt sockets are designed to be used on 12-pt fastener heads. Using a 12-pt socket on a 6-pt head fastener is misusing the 12-pt socket.

Nicely done, good advice and comparison. I personally would use a high quality set of 12 point cr-v for most applications by hand and 6 point cr-mo for impact tools.

What i also found that sometimes: if lets say a 12mm hex bold is corroded and spins inside the 12mm 6 point socket, you might be able to hammer on a 11mm 12 point socket and get that bold loose.

You said if you were in a situation where you had to remove a lot of square headed bolts the 12pt would be beneficial. What if you only had a few square headed bolts?

Are 12 point spark plug sockets ok for spark plugs at about 20nm or should i buy a six point one (I already have a twelve point one in my socket set).

Before addressing the respective advantages/disadvantages of 6-pt. vs.12-pt sockets, it's more important to first discuss the advantages of 6-pt. vs. 12-pt fastener heads. A 12-pt fastener head/12-pt. socket combination provides more contact surface area and contact points than a 6-pt fastener head/6-pt socket combination. A 12-pt fastener/socket combination can withstand more torque and causes less chance of rounding the fastener head than a 6-pt fastener/socket combo. Matching the socket to the fastener head is more important than making generalized statements about the different advantages/disadvantages of 6-pt. vs.12-pt. sockets.

They are extremely common for pole line hardware. Since most small square heads nuts are crap, the sockets are worth having even if rarely used. They contact all four corners of the bolt vs an open end wrench. Square head set screws are hardened, and do fine with 12 point or open end wrenches.

There are several things you said that are pure conjecture and just wrong. Both sockets have the same minimum thickness at the point. The failure will be on the weakest part and each have that the same minimum thickness. You also said that the 6 point lessens the chance of slippage exponentially. There is no exponential relationship at all about what you said. You should do some testing to show the actual differences instead of just talking about things without verification. Anyone who has watched other channels do actual testing know better.

They did a test on this on torque test channel. And intact 12 does slip off easier than 6. If you have high grade bolts, then it doesn't really matter. But low grade or smaller bolts and that 12 is slipping.
