Pay cash. Buy local when it's nickel and dime stuff. Order from Amazon for great selection, service, free delivery (usually), and prices. When you are small and just getting started, 3 years and under, this is all you need. Don't get bogged down in minor details and try to get everything perfect, or you'll never get going.

Thanks for the video Kyle. You have made it really clear on whether you should become a dealer or not. I'm still debating on signing up with PD.

I think you have made the right decision on where to source your parts, If you want to be a small business you need to quit making amazon wealthier, not only is power distributor also a small business they also provide training and technical support, Keep up the good work and keep small business a viable occupation!

I often find that ordering one or two OEM parts from Amazon prime is cheaper than ordering it from my wholesale company and having to pay added freight charge.

Yes you are correct. If I just need a couple of parts Amazon is a very good way to go. Once you know what you go through every year, the spring stock up from the distributor is where you really see the savings.

I am seriously contemplating a small engine service this spring/summer as a side hustle. If you have the cash on startup, seems like it could make sense to sign up for some of those items that have long shelf life like popular spark plugs, air filters, and oil.

Your inventory of parts will grow in proportion with your business, mine has, the parts business is what I focus on, I know what equipment is around my territory, and is commonly used, when locals need a part, they want it now, forget about online ordering, keep your prices normal and they will get it from you. Downside is.....you need to reinvest the profits and you might need more space. One business person said to me ....buy low sell high.

Good job describing how Power Distributors works. You are right, their website is horrible in describing how their process works. Never been a fan of marking up parts very much. In my opinion when you start marking up all kinds of stuff you end up not understanding the difference between what something cost versus what you charge. Paying attention to $2 here / $3 there with the knowledge that the item is being marked up every single time it exchanges hands.. what an unusual cost structure that becomes a logical pretzel. If inventory has a cost to carry then I'll attempt to cover that in my part price but not with the intention that I just made more money on my job. In the end I'm charging for my time & my need to re-invest into my shop. I do not intend to get rich off the parts I put into a job, I intend to get paid for my time, knowledge, and service.

Great video. I do have a question. How do you know if you have a part stocked? I know different manufacturers use the same parts, but different part numbers. Do you have software to cross reference these numbers, and track inventory?

We mostly use Stens for aftermarket belts , a lot of John Deere lawn tractor belts and for everything else. We had a couple of problems with them lately though. Which belts do you like to use?

@@kbssmallenginerepair2615 I can understand that, I don't like the buy more save more 3 level system them have at Stens, but that is what I have to deal with. What you might want to look into is getting a commercial account with your local auto parts dealer. I use NAPA and Pep-boys for all our oil, filters, even cheaper then Stens.

Great question. They will give you a list of their most common parts and fastest moving parts. They also have an “initial order” that they can send if you have no idea what to get which will be a variety of their fastest moving parts. However, you are able to order whatever you would like.
